UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is still holding out hopes for a showdown against Georges St-Pierre before he retires. On Wednesday, news surfaced that St-Pierre had called a press conference scheduled for Thursday in his native Montreal where he plans to announce his retirement from the sport. St-Pierre had reportedly been attempting to put together […]

Despite his best efforts to try and make it happen, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley concedes that a fight with Georges St-Pierre just isn’t going to happen.
Woodley currently reigns as the undisputed champion of the UFC’s 170-pound division. However, with 170-pound great Georges St-Pierre now back in the mix, Woodley would love to test himself against the future Hall Of Famer. “T-Wood” has tried to get the potential fight going several times, but it doesn’t seem like anything will be coming to fruition.
Especially after speaking to one of GSP’s coaches, legendary boxing coach Freddie Roach, Woodley has pretty much accepted he won’t be sharing the Octagon with “GSP” (via ESPN):
“I was talking to Freddie, and it’s just not gonna happen,” Woodley said. “We’re not gonna fight. It would be great to see. I think the fans would like to see the pound for pound best welterweight in the history of the sport at that current time to fight the one that’s saying he’s the GOAT right now.
“I think it’d be a great fight. But I’m not getting my hopes up. I’ve got one kid in front of me that’s coming up March 2nd. So I’m gonna focus on that.”
Now, Woodley is focusing on what’s directly in front of him. That being his upcoming title defense against Kamaru Usman. They’ll co-main event UFC 235 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 2, 2019.

“The Eagle” currently holds an undefeated record of 27-0. His latest victory came over Conor McGregor in October. He defeated the Irishman via fourth-round submission by way of neck crank. However, after the fight Khabib was involved in a brawl against McGregor’s team.
As a result, he can’t be booked in another bout until punishments from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) have been handed out. In the meantime, the 155-pound champion recently did an interview with Submission Radio to talk about his future. Khabib has long been linked to a dream match against former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
Many believe “GSP’s” wrestling could prove difficult for Khabib inside the Octagon. The Russian admits a fight against the Canadian would be very tough, which is why a fight with him would have to happen at 155 pounds (via MMA Fighting):
“Georges St. Pierre is a very big name,” said Khabib. “I like, an opponent who is a very tough opponent and he’s a little bit bigger than me. If we’re gonna fight, we have to fight at 155, because 170 is his weight and he’s gonna be a little bit bigger than me.
“For me it’s like a smart decision taking him to 155. He’s a very big challenge for me. Like, for my legacy, he’s a very good match-up for my legacy, for fans, for money, for everywhere now.
“I don’t know about his future, about his plans, but I respect him. In my opinion, he’s the greatest athlete who ever competed in the UFC, because he’s a champion inside the cage and outside the cage too. We’ll see.”
In regards to his wish list of fights, Khabib had three big names right off the bat:
“I don’t know right now,” Khabib said. “Why not maybe St. Pierre, Ferguson and Mayweather, it will be these three guys and we can retire and become the greatest athlete of all time.”
UFC President Dana White still isn’t sold on the dedication of Georges St-Pierre. UFC President Dana White still isn’t sold on the dedication of Georges St-Pierre.
White already expressed his doubts about the former Canadian welterweight champion prior to his return to the Octagon in November of last year. However, “GSP” returned to defeat Michael Bisping for the promotion’s middleweight title. Unfortunately, health concerns have prevented St-Pierre from returning to the cage since.
Not wanting to hold up the division, St-Pierre vacated the middleweight title, promoting then-interim champion Robert Whittaker to undisputed champ. Now, St-Pierre’s health seems to be progressing, so the Canadian could be gearing up for a return to the Octagon soon. St-Pierre knows he only has a few fights left in him before he decides to retire for good.
Because of that, the rest of the fights he accepts will be bouts that can add to his already amazing legacy. St-Pierre has already captured UFC gold in two weight classes. He has expressed interest in becoming the first-ever to do so in three. Fights against the likes of Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov could be prospects for “Rush” at 155 pounds.
White Isn’t Buying
However, UFC President Dana White’s stamp of approval would be required for that to happen, and that doesn’t seem likely. Speaking to MMA Junkie recently, White said he doesn’t believe the Canadian is serious about fighting right now:
“I don’t think Georges St-Pierre is looking to fight right now,” White said “You’ll hear him go out and do interviews: ‘I’ll fight Conor’ and stuff like that. But that’s not realistic.
“I think if Georges sees a fight that he likes, he’ll call it out, but he’s not looking to dive back in there anytime soon.”
White took issue with St-Pierre retiring from the UFC initially in 2013, vacating the welterweight title without having lost it. He was once again furious when St-Pierre vacated the middleweight title when he returned four years later. The UFC boss is reluctant to take a chance that happens again a third time by granting St-Pierre a lightweight title opportunity:
“The reality is this: The guy won the 170-pound championship, never lost it, gave it up,” White said. “Won the 185-pound championship, gave it up. I’m not going to have him come in to fight at 155 to give it up and not defend it. No.”
Santiago Ponzinibbio is extremely confident after his knockout victory over Neil Magny this past weekend (Sat. November 17, 2018) – to say the least.
Ponzinibbio was able to finish Magny in the fifth round of their UFC Argentina main event battle. The victory earned him a higher ranking in the welterweight division’s top ten and knocked Magny out of the group as a whole. The Argentine is hoping his victory will be enough to warrant a UFC welterweight title opportunity.
Immediately after the victory, Ponzinibbio proceeded to call out division champion Tyron Woodley. However, the callouts apparently didn’t end there. Speaking with MMA Junkie after his big win, Ponzinibbio also named two more big names that he believes he can beat. Ponzinibbio said, given the opportunity, he thinks he can knockout both Conor McGregor and Georges St-Pierre:
“You give me Conor, I am a better striker than him. He’s really good at trash talk and he’s a really good businessman, but I’m a better fighter. This is different. I’m a better striker. I have better timing. I have better power. I’ll finish him, for sure. I’ll finish McGregor.
“I’ll finish GSP – GSP is old. He’s a good guy. I like him. I’m a big fan. But I’m better. I’ll finish him. I’m ready for both. I’m an exciting fighter. I know I’m ready. I know I’ll finish Tyron.
“I know I’ll knock him out, but I need the opportunity. If you give me the fight with GSP, I’ll knock him out for sure. I’ll knock anybody at 170 pounds if you give me the opportunity.”
McGregor competes at lightweight, but has competed at 170 pounds before when he fought Nate Diaz twice during their feud with one another. As for “GSP,” he hasn’t competed since defeating Michael Bisping for the middleweight title last year, which he soon vacated after winning it. Ponzinibbio might not get any of the three men he wants next – Woodley, McGregor, or ‘GSP’ – but he certainly has a bright future in the welterweight division.
