Mixed martial arts fighter Henry Cejudo revealed he had to escape a burning hotel when he was caught in the middle of the wildfires that have spread across northern California.

In an interview Monday with Ariel Helwani on The MMA HourCejudo said he had fallen back asleep after hearing the fire alarm go off in his hotel. He awoke to find smoke filling his room and looked out his window to see half of the hotel was on fire.

I was scared,” Cejudo said (via MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi). “I thought I felt adrenaline fighting. This is something I’ve never felt before. I was kind of in survival mode. I’m a fighter, I’m a wrestler. The only thing I know how to do is survive. I was thinking this is a horrible way to die, man. Maybe I deserve to die, but not like this.”

Cejudo escaped the hotel by jumping out of his second-story room and onto a tree branch that was on fire. He jumped down from the branch and ran toward a police car he saw in the distance. However, the police car left the scene before he reached it. Instead, he got a ride to safety from a passing fire truck that spotted him.

Cejudo confirmed to Helwani last week he suffered burns to his right foot during the escape.

Because he had little time to exit his room, Cejudo was forced to leave behind many of his possessions, including his gold medal from the 2008 Summer Olympics, an Olympic ring and a one-of-a-kind belt his mentor had made for him. All three were lost in the fire.

I think they’ll eventually find it in the rubbish,” Cejudo said of his gold medal, per ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto. “Everybody is pretty sentimental about it. They’re not letting anyone into the area right now, but I think they’ll dig for it when they can.”

Cejudo also confirmed to Okamoto he still plans to fight Sergio Pettis at UFC 218 on Dec. 2 in Detroit.

Earlier this week, former UFC flyweight title challenger was forced to jump from his hotel room in order to escape from a California wildfire.

Recently speaking about the incident, “The Messenger” revealed that he originally went back to sleep after thinking nothing serious was taking place:

“I was like, ‘I don’t know why they’re doing that. I thought it was just a California thing,’” Cejudo told Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole. “I didn’t think anything of it. I’m an Arizona boy.”

“I looked out the window and everything was OK. I was just thinking that someone had hit the alarm but it didn’t seem like there was anything wrong. I just went back to sleep.”

Obviously, the situation did indeed turn into something serious, and once he realized, Cejudo was forced to react immediately. Upon landing after jumping, the former Olympian suffered a burn on his foot, although he escaped relatively unscathed aside from that:

“I saw houses on fire and I looked to my left and half of the hotel I was staying at, my floor, was on fire,” Cejudo recalled. “It was scary. And at that time, the only thing I could do was to grab my slacks. I grabbed my slacks I wore the night before, but I couldn’t see anything to do anything else. I put my slacks on, I opened the window and I jumped off. I leaped off the second story of the hotel.”

“As I jumped off, I landed on a branch that was on fire. Honestly, there was fire everywhere. The fire burned the top of my right foot. I was OK, but I had to put the fire out that was on my right foot. And as I was walking toward the front of the hotel, where the lobby was, it was all going. I saw the hotel on fire, cars on fire, houses around it. It was terrible.”

After the news was announced, much of the attention focused on the fact that Cejudo lost his Olympic gold medal in the fire, but he claims that the medal is ‘just an object’:

“You know, the medal just was an object, just a medal and that’s it,” Cejudo said. “What really meant something was the blood, the sweat, the tears that went into getting that medal. I’ll always have the memories of that with me.”

“I’m not too worried about that,” he added. “This was a tragedy, just like that terrible thing that happened in Vegas. It’s awful. Losing a medal, man, I am fortunate to be here talking to you and being alive. That’s the important thing.”

“I’m just happy to be alive.”

Cejudo is currently scheduled to take on the surging Sergio Pettis at UFC 218 on Dec. 2, 2017 in Detroit, Michigan.

Top UFC flyweight Henry Cejudo has lost the physical embodiment of his greatest-ever athletic accomplishment in the raging wildfires that are currently ravaging Northern California, but he has escaped with his life.

After a report surfaced from the San Francisco Chronicle that Cejudo had broken his ankle escaping from the flames, “The Messenger” confirmed to Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting that while he did not break his ankle escaping from Santa Rosa, Calif., he did suffer burns to his right foot and lost his 2008 Olympic gold medal for wrestling.

Santa Rosa is one of the areas most affected by the raging wildfire, with seven reported deaths as local authorities fear the number will rise. Several people have been reported missing in the natural disaster.

Coming off of an impressive knockout win over Wilson Reis at September’s UFC 215, Cejudo was scheduled to fight rising contender Sergio Pettis at December 2’s UFC 218. It now remains unknown if he will be able to participate in the bout, but we at LowKick MMA are thankful Cejudo has escaped with relatively minor injuries in such a dangerous spot.

A number of athletes fled the wildfires in Northern California over the weekend, and one of those athletes was UFC flyweight contender and Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo.

Former MLB pitcher Bret Saberhagen told the San Francisco Chronicle‘s Susan Slusser that Cejudo did not evacuate from the Fountaingrove Inn in Santa Rosa and broke his ankle jumping from a second-story balcony to escape.

Athletes and celebrities were in Santa Rosa attending a fundraiser put on by NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott.

On Tuesday morning, Matheus Aquino, an MMA manager to Cejudo’s training partners who compete in Bellator, confirmed to MMAjunkie.com’s Chamatkar Sandhu that he broke his ankle fleeing the fires.

The injury puts his UFC 218 bout on December 2 against Sergio Pettis in jeopardy. The UFC and his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, have yet to comment on the status of Cejudo (h/t MMAJunkie.com’s Mike Bohn). Cejudo is coming off an impressive second-round KO over Wilson Reis.

Bleacher Report will have more on Cejudo’s injury and fight status when more information is available.

The UFC continues to add bouts to the card for UFC 218 PPV (pay-per-view) event. The promotion recently announced that former championship contender Henry Cejudo would face Sergio Pettis in a flyweight bout at the event.

No word yet on if this bout will be featured on the main or preliminary card. If you recall, the two fighters were set to fight at UFC 211 earlier this year, but the bout was scrapped when Cejudo pulled out with a hand injury.

This is a big fight for not only the fighters but for the fans as this fight is a matter of staying in the title picture as well as a fight that could send, the winner up the ladder in the rankings.

Cejudo (11-2) got back in the win column earlier this month with a bonus-winning second-round knockout of Wilson Reis at UFC 215. Before that win, he lost to champion Demetrious Johnson by first-round TKO last April at UFC 197 and then a split-decision loss to Joseph Benavidez.

Pettis (16-2,) is on a four fight winning streak and is coming off a win over Brandon Moreno in a dominant five-round main event at UFC Fight Night 114 in Mexico City.

UFC 218 takes place December 2nd at the Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit, Michigan. The night’s main card will air live on pay-per-view while the prelims will air on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. Here is the updated card:

Francis Ngannou vs. Alistair Overeem
Cortney Casey vs. Felice Herrig
Abdul Razak Al-Hassan vs. Sabah Homasi
Henry Cejudo vs. Sergio Pettis
