Former women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate has reacted to Holly Holm’s controversial split decision loss to Ketlen Viera in the main event of UFC Vegas 55.

Tate, who is also coming off a loss to Viera, took to Twitter to give her thoughts on the fight. ‘Cupcake’ stated that her fellow former champ utilized the wrong gameplan against Viera, in a similar manner to how Tate herself lost to the Brazilian contender.

“Not a good game plan by @HollyHolm,” Tate states. “I can say it bc I’ve made the mistake before too. she shoulda stayed on the outside & forced Ketlen to be the aggressor. Holly’s an excellent counter striker, she tired herself out by engaging in the clinch too much. Ketlen makes it look easy.”

Where does Holly Holm go from here?

Now at the age of 40, it may be that Holm does not get the chance to fight for the UFC title again after this loss. There are several options for her in the 135lb division, such as a rematch with Germaine de Randamie or a bout with Aspen Ladd. However, it is always worth noting that Holly Holm is a multi-sport athlete.

‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ already had an extensive boxing and kickboxing career prior to signing for the UFC in 2015. Having achieved such success in MMA, there is a chance that Holm now returns to her roots. In particular, there are rumblings of a potential boxing match with Irish Superstar Kaite Taylor, who recently made history by defeating Amanda Serrano in the first women’s boxing match to headline in Madison Square Garden.

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn recently told TalkSport that there were three opponents being considered for Taylor’s next fight, one of which was indeed Holm.

“There’s three fights,” said Hearn. “There’s Holly Holm, there’s Cyborg and there’s Amanda Serrano.”

The closely contested bout saw both fighters make a case for victory, with many believing Holm had done enough to get the win. But in the end, the judges awarded a razor-thin split decision victory to Vieira.

The most significant moment of the fight was in round two, when Vieira came within a whisker of choking Holm out on the feet. The American got the better of the grappling exchanges throughout the fight, but on the feet, both fighters had their moments landing huge strikes.

#5-ranked bantamweight Vieira is now riding a two-fight win streak, having previously defeated Miesha Tate in November last year. Vieira, who headlined for the second consecutive outing tonight, most recently defeated former bantamweight champion, common-opponent, Miesha Tate with a unanimous decision win back in November of last year.

Utilizing her cinch work when prompted, Vieira was forced to work defensively from that position at the Octagon fence on occasion, however managed to land a couple of takedowns to force Holm to defend from her back, as well as almost wrapping up a rear-naked choke from a standing position.

Despite concern from her coach and head cornerman, Andre Pederneiras before the fifth and final round, Vieira, who entered tonight’s headlining clash as the #6 ranked bantamweight challenger — managed to land her seventh UFC victory — and second straight win over a former division titleholder.

Former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm has explained what will be on the line when she returns to action tonight.

After a 19-month layoff, Holm is finally set to resume her quest for a second title reign in tonight’s UFC Vegas 55 main event, which will see her go toe-to-toe with rising contender Ketlen Vieira.

In her last outing, Holm recorded a second consecutive victory with a win against Irene Aldana on Abu Dhabi’s Fight Island. The result set the former champ on her first win streak since her unblemished 10-0 record was tainted by Miesha Tate in 2016.

Having hit her best form since losing the belt, “The Preacher’s Daughter” is looking to cement her place as number one contender, making her next outing crucial in her pursuit of gold.

Holm: I Need This Win To Progress Forward

During UFC Vegas 55 media day on Wednesday, Holm described what will be on the line when she makes her long-awaited return.

As well as her ever-present desire to have her hand raised and avoid defeat at all costs, the 40-year-old sees her clash with Vieira as key in ensuring that she can make her way back to within touching distance of the bantamweight belt.

“I have to win regardless, because I hate to lose anyway. I just hate to lose, period, no matter what’s on the line,” said Holm. “I wanna win the rounds when I’m in training. If I’m in front of two people, if I’m in front of two million, if I’m in front of the whole world, I wanna win. I hate to lose. So, that’s number one, I wanna get in there and I wanna win Saturday.

“But, also, as far as a career, if you don’t win, your next steps and your next options are never as many as you want, or they’re more limited. You take a step back, not a step forward,” added Holm. “So, yes, in the long run, I need this win so I can keep progressing forward, because I wanna get to the belt.”

While Holm has one eye on the championship picture, inserting her name into it will be no easy task. The #6-ranked Vieira has already stalled the resurgence of one former champion in Tate and will be looking to do the same in her second consecutive main event assignment.

Who do you think will emerge victorious in the UFC Vegas 55 main event, Holly Holm or Ketlen Vieira?
