Technique Video of the Day: The Inverted Triangle

UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson goes down this Saturday, featuring the Cody McKenzie of triangles, Paul “Sassangle” Sass. Only time will tell if the “Sassangle” proves more successful than the “Mckenzietine,” but just in case Paul is one of our many devoted readers out there, we figured we’d let 2009 ADCC double gold medalist,  2011 Superfight Champion, and human Jiu-Jitsu highlight reel Braulio Estima demonstrate one of the many inversions of the triangle.

This take on the triangle was actually the one that Estima used to defeat current ADCC Under 88kg and Absolute champion Andre Galvao in the 2009 tournament. The choke requires a good deal of speed and precision, as it attacks the opposite side of your opponent’s head than expected. Once completed however, this version of the triangle is arguably more lethal than that of the standard, as it allows you to more easily control your opponents legs and keep them from trying to slam out of the hold.

As a bonus, I’ve also added the second half of the aforementioned 2009 match between Estima and Galvao, as well as a highlight video showcasing some of Estima’s best moves. Enjoy.

Technique Video of the Day: The Kimura Sweep

Ultimate Fight Night 25 provided us with a good deal of highlights this past weekend, but while you were watching Jake Shields trying to single leg Kevin Mulhall or Alan Belcher beat the tar out of Jason Macdonald, you may have overlooked the textbook kimura sweep that Lance Benoist pulled on Matt Riddle in the first round of their Fight of the Night earning scrap. Personally, it was my favorite highlight of the fight, and I loves me some broken noses.

Personally, it was my favorite highlight of the fight, and I loves me some broken noses.

Though not the most technical video we have offered, the kimura sweep is a fundamental tool for any fighter who finds themselves on the losing side of a takedown and either looking to gain a dominant position or simply stand back up. Submissions 101 has long been one of my favorite consultants for BJJ techniques, and their Youtube channel alone offers guides for even the greenest of Jiu Jitsu practitioners. In the above video, 10th Planet and Gracie Jiu Jitsu purple belt Ari Bolden demonstrates the kimura sweep from the full guard, as was the case in the Riddle/Benoist fight.

Speaking of Kevin Mulhall, did you know he runs his own gym in New Jersey that’s open to the public and children as young as five? All I’m saying is, Jake Shields is lucky he came to his senses before Mulhall decided to armbar the dickens out of him. As a bonus, I’ve provided you with the promotional video for his gym, Jersey Fight Club, because you deserve it Potato Nation. Enjoy.

Technique Video of the Day: 10th Planet Leg Lock and a South African Hottie

Yesterday when we posted video of that double armbar submission, Potato Nation loyalist ihateemo pointed out that it looked a bit like Eddie Bravo’s Sorcerer submission, and he even linked to the video. Thanks, ihateemo, now we can’t post that as the technique video of the day and write about how they looked similar. We would have looked very perceptive and educated, and everyone would have been impressed, but ihateemo had to go and screw it up for us. Thanks a lot, jerkface.

Good thing is, Bravo has plenty of videos out there of the strange and wonderful world of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, and finding footage of him weeded and talking his way through an exotic submission requires about two minutes and a yellow belt in Google Fu. With just a little bit of time and effort, we found this little gem covering the Vaporizer leg lock (which has NOTHING TO DO WITH WEED, YOU GUYS), plus a bonus: the vid features Joanne Spracklen, whom we’re sort of fond of around here.

Ok, Nation: go put on your gi pants, do some stretching, and try this out on a white belt today. With any luck, you can make them tap and/or cry and be back on XBoX before cocktail hour.

Bizarro World Technique Video of the Day: Omoplata from Guard by Chael Sonnen

WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW? VidProps: BlackBeltMagazine/YouTube

Some things you just never expect to see. You never expect to see a picture of Brock Lesnar with spectacles, or BJ Penn and Matt Hughes broing it up. We will probably never see Cheick Kongo hit a flower sweep to triangle choke, or Jared Shaw look like anything but a giant bag o’ douche, or Dana White say anything nice about MMA websites. I have seen some things in my time, Nation, but this … this is a whole ‘nother thing.

What we have here is some truly unexpected video evidence of Chael Sonnen on his back. Doing jiu jitsu. Explaining jiu jitsu. Attempting, if you can believe it, a submission maneuver.

Mind is asplode.

As if that were not enough, after the jump you’ll find more video of this alternate-universe Sonnen being interviewed by a Brazilian reporter for RedeTV and saying nice, respectful things about Brazil and its flag. Lest you start to believe that one of Sonnen’s other personalities has completely taken over, relax — he’s still full of piss and vinegar whenever he talks about Anderson Silva.

I’m not sure what all this means, Nation, but i’m scared.

Someone hold me.

How To Defeat Fedor With Fabricio Werdum – Watch more Funny Videos

In the first of a hopefully-ongoing series in which MMA fighters instruct you on how to do things you’ll never actually have the opportunity to do, here’s Strikeforce heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum taking us through the triangle/armbar he used to defeat Fedor Emelianenko back in June. (Props to Ruben Vera for putting this together.) Despite Werdum’s accent and liberal interpretation of the word "back," the dude seems like a great instructor. If you live near Huntington Beach, why not drop by Kings MMA and say hello?

It’s Friday. You ain’t got no job and you ain’t got shit to do so CP’s gonna get you your MMA radio fix.

If you didn’t listen in during the taping of the interactive portion of the show Wednesday, it’s incredibly professionally done and we had at least 5000 listeners and a line-up of callers we had to turn away because we ran out of time.

If you did listen, come on guys, it wasn’t that bad was it? Give it another listen. We promise we fixed everything in the mix.

One thing you didn’t hear on Wednesday was an exclusive interview we did with Jorge Rivera for this episode in which the UFC middleweight basically calls Chad an idiot for saying that a fighter doesn’t have to be exciting as long as he wins.
