Ian Garry

Whether or not you love his brash attitude and the ability to back it up, Ian Garry is a UFC superstar in the making, and ‘The Future’ has some big plans once he takes care of a little business with top-ten-ranked contender Vicente Luque.

After kickstarting his UFC career with an impressive six straight wins, including a decisive decision victory over Neil Magny in his last outing, ‘The Future’ plans on clawing his way up the stacked welterweight rankings. Appearing on the Anik & Florian podcast, Garry hopes to one day share the Octagon with perennial contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, but he isn’t stopping there, calling for potential showdowns with ex-titleholders Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman.

“Here’s the thing, anybody who’s ranked above me, anybody whose number when I finish that fight is ranked higher than me is an opponent and it just has to see,” Garry said. “Right, we sit there and we look at it. I’ve called ‘Wonderboy’ out, he said no to me multiple times. Is the UFC Dublin card gonna manifest? Can we put me and ‘Wonderboy’ on a main event in UFC Dublin in front of the Irish crowd and bring it back to Dublin, Ireland? Why not.

“If Colby goes out there and gets starched by Leon, who is he gonna fight next? Let me go in there and thump the mouth off him. You’ve got Usman who’s just come off of a loss against Khamzat, why not give me him? Go out there and it’s like alright, Khamzat couldn’t finish him, watch what I’ll do to him. Anybody that’s above me, they’re all opponents” (h/t MMA News).

Ian Garry looking to improve his ground game with one of the UFC’s greatest grapplers

Perhaps the Irishman is biting off a little more than he can chew, but 13 wins in a row certainly shows that Ian Garry is ready for the next level of competition. He’ll get exactly that at UFC 296 in December when he returns to take on Brazilian knockout artist Vicente Luque.

I’m going to spend a month with Demian Maia, improving my jiu-jitsu, working on fundamentals, and just fixing and growing and learning jiu-jitsu from arguably the best grappler that UFC has ever seen,” Garry revealed. “So, that’s what I’m going to do and then I’m going to go in there on December 16 and do whatever the f*ck I want to do when I’m in the fight because I can, that’s the truth.”

Despite both sharing the mats in South Florida at Kill Cliff FC, undefeated Dublin striker, Ian Machado Garry, and recent headliner, Vicente Luque are slated to fight each other at UFC 296 on December 16. from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Machado Garry, who landed the number eleven rank in the official welterweight pile back in August at UFC 292, landing a hugely one-sided unanimous decision win over Neil Magny – turning in a heralded striking display against the division’s most winningest fighter.

As for Luque, the New Jersey-born Brazilian earned the number ten rank at 170lbs back in August to boot, landing a unanimous decision win over former undisputed lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos – snapping a two-fight losing skid.

And as per UFC CEO, Dana White, Ian Machado Garry and Vicente Luque will now share the Octagon on December 16. at UFC 296 in Las Vegas, in a welterweight showdown.

In the midst of a six-fight winning run since landing in the Octagon, former Cage Warriors welterweight champion, Machado Garry turned in her third victory of the year with his judging shutout against Magny back in August.

Prior to that, Machado Garry rallied to stop Kenan Song with third round strikes, before turning in a highlight-reel high-kick and strikes TKO win over veteran kickboxing talent, Daniel Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night Charlotte back in May.

A perennial contender at the welterweight limit, Luque, who boasts a 22-9-1 professional record, largely is considered to pose the biggest threat to Machado Garry’s undefeated run to date – having racked up victories over the likes of Belal Muhammad, Niko Price, Jalin Turner, Bryan Barebrena, Mike Perry, Randy Brown, Michael Chiesa, and former undisputed welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley

Sean O'Malley unsure Ian Machado Garry UFC sure you can't beat Neil Magny by decision

Whilst incumbent bantamweight champion, Sean O’Malley believes undefeated welterweight contender, Ian Machado Garry can most definitely become a superstar whilst competing under the banner of the UFC – victories such as his decision win over the veteran, Neil Magny won’t go far in propelling him toward those heights.

O’Malley, who struck undisputed bantamweight gold last month in his first pay-per-view main event at UFC 292, dispatched defending champion and division great, Aljamain Sterling with a second round TKO – dropping the Uniondale early in the frame with a counter punch, before finishing with follow-up ground strikes.

On that same card, Portmarnock native, Machado Garry improved to 13-0 as a professional, with the former Cage Warriors titleholder wrapping up a shutout unanimous decision win over the above-mentioned most-winningest welterweight, Magny on the main card.

Sean O’Malley unsure if Ian Machado Garry can reach UFC stardom

However, despite his one-sided judging win, O’Malley – who himself is on the cusp of reaching Octagon stardom, warned Machado Garry that decision victories over contenders akin to Magny must come few and far between for him during his UFC tenure.

“Yeah, I think he (Ian Machado Garry) could [become a superstar], for sure,” Sean O’Malley told Peter Carroll during a recent appearance on The Craic. “Will he? We’ll see. I think the reason I’m in the spot I’m in, is because of my performances. You know, I have some f*cking sweet knockouts. So, I think to get to that certain level of a Conor (McGregor), you know, knocking out Jose (Aldo), knocking out Chad Mendes, knocking out Eddie Alvarez. You can’t go out there and beat Neil Magny in a decision and be a superstar.”

Himself eyeing a title rematch with Marlon Vera before the end of the year at UFC 296 in December, O’Malley has set sights on avenging his sole career knockout loss, dating back to a 2020 grudge match.

As for Machado Garry, welcoming a striking battle with former title challenger, Stephen Thompson before the end of the annum to boot, the Dubliner recently hit headlines after claiming he would walk into Miami and “slap the mouth” off of former interim champion, Colby Covington.

Ian Machado Garry claims Israel Adesanya lost more than Sean Strickland actually won at UFC 293

Sharing his thoughts on former two-time middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya’s title loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 over the weekend, unbeaten welterweight, Ian Machado Garry has claimed the City Kickboxing staple lost the bout more than the newly-minted champion actually won the clash.

Headlining the promotion’s return to Sydney, Australia, Adesanya suffered a rather comprehensive unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) loss to outspoken challenger, Strickland, dropping his undisputed middleweight championship as a result.

The loss came as City Kickboxing mainstay, Adesanya’s second in his three most recent Octagon walks, having first lost the middleweight crown to common-opponent and arch-rival, Brazilian knockout artist, Alex Pereira back in November of last year at UFC 281 in Madison Square Garden.

And targeting a title re-run with Strickland – as soon as UFC 296 in December, if not the early goings of next year by his head coach, Eugene Bareman, Adesanya has been defended as losing the title more than Strickland actually won it from him, according to Dubin striker, Machado Garry.

“I feel like Izzy (Israel Adesanya) lost the fight more than Sean Strickland won the fight,” Ian Machado Garry told MMA Fighting. “I feel like there was a certain point in that fight where Izzy was afraid to lose more than he wanted to win. That is essentially meant that his efficiency, his output, his shot selection wasn’t as elite as it normally is and it gave Sean Strickland the opportunity for his awkwardness to have success, his constant pressure to have success.”

“I feel like if you run that fight back, there’s no way Sean Strickland gets his hand raised again,” Ian Machado Garry explained. “That’s my opinion, but at the end of the day, Sean Strickland got his hand raised and I can never shoot a man for reaching his dream.”

As far as his own future is concerned, undefeated welterweight finisher, Machado Garry has set sights on former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington – claiming he would walk into Miami, and “slap the mouth off” the former gold holder in the future

UFC welterweight, Ian Machado Garry, also has his eyes set on a potential fight with Colby Covington.

While Machado Garry has been campaigning for a fight with Stephen Thompson, it seems that Thompson wants to pursue another match up. So with Garry having to settle for another name, when asked on who the ideal matchup would be for a rumoured return to Dublin, he named Covington.

“I want Colby Covington, oh my god! At home,” Ian Machado Garry said on the MMA Hour. “The only thing that annoys me about that is that I would have more fun doing that in Miami.

In his back garden, walk into Miami and slap the mouth off him in front of all his fans, I have no problem playing the heel. I have no problem going out there and being the bad guy for the weekend because at the end of the day when i put him unconscious, I’ll have a smile on my face.”

Ian Machado Garry talks about potential matchup with Colby Covington

Talking to Severe MMA, Ian Machado Garry spoke on how he would fair taking on someone with the style of a Covington. In Typical fashion, Garry claimed that should he stand opposite Covington, or Kamaru Usman for that matter – he would out grapple them.

“So to fight the Usmans, to fight the Colbys to fight whoever they can put in front of me that’s going to want to try to take me down and and get rid of my hands and my feet. I’m excited to show the world what else I’m capable of,” Ian Machado Garry said. “You give me Sean Brady, I’ll submit him. You give me (Kamaru) Usman or Colby (Covington), I’ll out grapple them, outwrestle them. (H/T Bloody Elbow).

It’s unclear how long it will be until Garry returns to action, but the Irishman seems keen on making it soon.

Gilbert Burns believes ‘Badass’ Ian Machado Garry will land UFC championship: ‘There’s new blood coming’

Gilbert Burns Ian Garry

Gilbert Burns is certain that Ian Garry has what it takes to be a UFC champion one day.

Standing at 13-0 and currently riding a six-fight win streak in the UFC, Garry has been a dominant young force in the welterweight division. He was most recently in action at UFC 292 where he faced Neil Magny and made easy work of the versatile veteran. Now, he’s looking to face Stephen Thompson, and a win against that caliber of opponent would see him very close to if not ready for a title shot.

Burns was recently on MMA Fighting’s Trocação Franca podcast and shared his thoughts about the prospects of the young Irishman Ian Garry.

“I think so — in a few years, yes,” Burns said when asked if he sees Garry holding the UFC welterweight title one day (H/T MMA Fighting). “He’s a great kid, 25 years old. This kid is a badass. Before the fight, he said he would do all that — he pretty much called the entire fight beforehand, and pulled it off.”

Gilbert Burns speaks about the dangerous young talent inside the welterweight division

“I think Shavkat (Rakhmonov) is really good, too,” Burns continued. “There’s also Jack Della Maddalena, a tough kid who’s coming up. There’s this Venezuelan kid, Michael Morales, an undefeated kid. Gabriel Bonfim too, a nasty kid. There’s new blood coming.”

“(Stephen Thompson) ‘Wonderboy’ needs to pay attention,” Gilbert Burns warned. “Older fighters need to pay attention. Neil Magny just lost badly. They need to reinvent themselves otherwise it won’t be good for them, brother.”

Currently rehabbing a shoulder injury that was sustained in his fight with Belal Muhammad, Burns is still confident that he’s got the fire to compete in what is quickly becoming the UFC’s most competitive division.

“…I’ve been knocked out, TKO’d, knocked down, but there were many fights where I wasn’t any (of those),” Gilbert Burns continued. I have good jiu-jitsu and I can use that too. I’m healthy, I’m fine, and I’m hungry to fight. I’ll only leave (MMA) if I lose three or four in a row and badly, getting knocked out. Then, I’m out. But I’m fighting. If I’m still doing it, I’ll keep doing it for years.

“I train with all of those guys. I just trained with Kamaru (Usman), and did some positions with Ian Garry. When Shavkat and all of these guys come here, I train with all of them. I can fight at the highest level. When I start getting smashed and no longer enjoying training, when I’m too tired for this, then it’s time. But I’m hungry to train now, man. I’m like a maniac now for not being able to train because of my shoulder.”
