UFC Commentator: Champion Belal Muhammad Has Advantage After Shavkat Rakhmonov Performance

Belal Muhammad is probably feeling pretty good about his chances against Shavkat Rakhmonov after seeing ‘Nomad’ go five rounds at UFC 310.

While Rakhmonov scored his 19th career win in the evening’s co-main event, his clash with Ian Machado Garry left a lot to be desired. Rakhmonov largely dominated the action against the fence and logged nearly 12 minutes of control time en route to a unanimous decision victory, but it was the first time that the Kazakh looked human since UFC fans became familiar with him in 2020.

Looking back on Saturday’s scrap during an appearance on Michael Bisping’s Believe You Me podcast, Paul Felder thinks the reigning welterweight world champion probably got a big boost of confidence after seeing how the title eliminator between Rakhmonov and Garry played out in Las Vegas.

“I think if you’re Belal, you’re pretty happy with either one of those guys winning, right? I mean, they spent a lot of time in the clinch,” Felder said. “There were a lot of moments of inactivity, whereas a guy like Belal Muhammad is going to be relentless in those positions—against the fence, with the takedown attempts.

“Now, I know Shavkat potentially had a pretty bad knee injury that he was dealing with. How badly that affected him, we can’t really know, but he did look a little off to me. But I’m telling you, if I’m the champ, I’m excited for the next matchup with him. I think a lot of times we see when these guys are so scary and get all these finishes, once somebody shows a little bit of weakness in them—shows that there’s a chance to beat them—other guys are very excited at the opportunity. So, I’m excited to see that fight happen.”

Rakhmonov reportedly went into UFC 310 with a pre-existing injury

With the win, Rakhmonov is expected to be the first man to challenge Muhammad after ‘Remember The Name’ scored a decisive decision win over ex-champion Leon Edwards earlier this year in Manchester. Originally, Muhammad had hoped to defend his title at UFC 310, but a bone infection in his foot forced him to bow out of the bout.

According to Daniel Cormier, Rakhmonov tore his MCL ahead of the fight with Garry which could explain why ‘Nomad’ chose to take a more measured approach against Garry.

“If I’m Belal Muhammad, I’m actually kind of happy watching this fight tonight because Shavkat Rakhmonov did not look like himself even though I learned after that he had an injury,” Cormier said in a video on his YouTube channel. “I think he might have tore his MCL going into the fight. Granted, with a torn ligament in your knee you’re not going to look like the killer that you looked like in fights prior.”

No details have been revealed regarding the extent of the injury or how long it could put Rakhmonov on the shelf, but he is expected to undergo an MRI this week.

Kamaru Usman Assesses Shavkat Rakhmonov, Ian Garry After UFC 310: ‘There’s Holes In Both Of Their Games’

Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman was watching closely as two undefeated contenders at 170-pounds met in the co-main event of UFC 310 this past Saturday. Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman was watching closely as two undefeated contenders at 170-pounds met in the co-main event of UFC 310 this past Saturday. Cementing his status as the next title challenger, Shavkat Rakhmonov beat Ian Machado Garry in his first pro win via the scorecards.

Despite taking the fight on a few weeks notice after Belal Muhammad withdrew from his scheduled title defense against Rakhmonov, Garry was able to test the man that many believe to be the boogeyman of the division, so much so that he doesn’t feel like he lost. Later updates on Rakhmonov’s physical health, along with the Irishman’s performance, could be reasons why he didn’t look at his best despite getting the win.

Usman was one of the names that many wanted to see step in to face Rakhmonov on December 7 and Garry has publicly criticized “The Nigerian Nightmare” for not taking fights on multiple occasions. During the latest episode of his Pound 4 Pound podcast, Usman gave his thoughts on the fight.

Though he said that he doesn’t want to give too much away in case he ends up fighting either man at some point, Usman believes that Rakhmonov and Garry exposed each others weaknesses at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“I am a wrestler. Once Ian got taken down a few times, then the fight kinda got away from him. Shavkat, as far as standing and putting the combinations together, he couldn’t really do that well with Ian Garry. There’s holes in both of their games.”

Despite this, Usman went on to give both men credit for the mentality that they showed in the fight.

“It shows how Shavkat is a dog. He’s willing to just do whatever it takes to get in there and get that win, and so is Ian. It’s just that Shavkat was a little bit more of a dog than Ian Garry.”

Daniel Cormier Reveals Injury Shavkat Rakhmonov Fought Through To Beat Ian Garry At UFC 310

Ian Machado Garry came away from UFC 310 this past weekend with the opinion that even though he suffered his first loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov, it didn’t feel like a setback. Ian Machado Garry came away from UFC 310 this past weekend with the opinion that even though he suffered his first loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov, it didn’t feel like a setback. The two undefeated welterweights met in the co-main event on Saturday night where at the end of five rounds, the number one contender got his hand raised via a unanimous decision.

This result saw Rakhmonov’s 100% finishing rate come to an end as he went to the scorecards for the first time in his pro career. His output is largely what won him three of the five rounds on the scorecards as he landed some effective strikes and grappled with Garry without ever really putting him in serious danger.

In fact, it was the Irishman that had the best moment of the fight after he took his opponent’s back in the fifth round and tried to lock up the rear-naked choke. Garry has received a lot of credit in the aftermath of the fight and rightfully so but new information also points to a reason why Rakhmonov may have looked far more beatable than in the past.

Daniel Cormier posted his immediate reactions to the fights on his YouTube channel as he reflected on the night’s action whilst still being sat cage-side at the T-Mobile Arena. After saying that he didn’t think Rakhmonov looked at his best on December 7, “DC” states that the Kazakh fighter suffered an injury before the fight which he says may have been a torn MCL.

Though Garry still deserves praise for his performance, this would also make his opponent’s display more impressive considering what he was potentially fighting through. The severity of the injury may also impact the time frame for his welterweight title fight with Belal Muhammad that was originally set to take place at UFC 310.

“Shavkat Rakhmonov did not look like himself even though I learned after that he had an injury, I think he might have torn his MCL going into the fight. Granted, with a torn ligament in your knee, you’re not going to look like the killer that you looked like in fights prior.”

There was also some speculation online that Rakhmonov addressed this during his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan but the translator did not relay that information though this isn’t confirmed.

Shavkat Reacts To Losing 100 Percent Finish Rate At UFC 310: ‘Ian Had Great Preparation’

In the co-main event of UFC 310, Shavkat Rakhmonov remained undefeated as he became the first man to defeat Ian Machado Garry in a welterweight title eliminator. The five-round contest was also the first time that “Nomad” has been to the scorecards in his pro career. Coming into December 7 off of a six-fight win […]

In the co-main event of UFC 310, Shavkat Rakhmonov remained undefeated as he became the first man to defeat Ian Machado Garry in a welterweight title eliminator. The five-round contest was also the first time that “Nomad” has been to the scorecards in his pro career.

Coming into December 7 off of a six-fight win streak inside the Octagon, Rakhmonov has earned five submissions and one knockout during his time in the promotion. Despite him still winning three of the five rounds on all three scorecards, Garry was able to keep himself out of danger for the majority of the 25-minutes to make it competitive.

The Irishman may not have come away with the win but in his toughest fight to date on short notice, he proved that he belongs at the elite level and to some, he showed that the boogeyman of the division isn’t unbeatable. In his post-fight press conference, Rakhmonov said that though he’s disappointed to have not got the finish for the first time, he gave credit to his opponent for this.

“Who doesn’t want to finish fights? I did everything in my power to do so, but Ian had a great preparation, but I believe next fight I will continue my finishing streak.”

Rakhmonov also agreed with Garry’s sentiment that this won’t be the last time that the two former training partners at Kill Cliff FC will meet inside the Octagon. For now, they will go their separate ways as the 19-0 contender moves on to his title fight with Belal Muhammad which was set to take place this past weekend until the champion withdrew several weeks ago.

“We’re going to keep winning and if he keeps winning, we’re going to meet again.”

Shavkat Rakhmonov vs. Ian Machado Garry - UFC 310 Highlights

Shavkat Rakhmonov outworked Ian Machado Garry throughout their five-round co-main event at UFC 310, scoring a unanimous decision victory and moving to 19-0 in his mixed martial arts career.

Much of the first round was spent clinch-fighting along the cage — most of which was initiated by Rakhmonov. With 30 seconds to go, the fighters finally separated and Rakhmonov popped Garry’s head back with a big right hand. Rakhmonov immediately re-initiated the clinch and maintained his hold on Garry until the end of the round.

The second round saw both fighters open up a little more with their striking, the advantage clearly going to Rakhmonov who landed a couple of solid jabs and a right hand that clipped the Irishman while he was circling away from the fence. Rakhmonov tried to follow it up with a left that prompted Garry to clinch up and put Rakhmonov’s back against the fence.

Rakhmonov reverses the position and once again fails to get Garry to the mat. Rakhmonov ultimately relinquishes the hold and returns to the center of the cage where they exchange a few blows before heading to their respective corners.

Garry undoubtedly had his best round in the third, opening up more with the kicks and catching Rakhmonov with some slick jabs, but it was ‘Nomad’ who made the biggest statement in the round with a booming right hand right before the horn.

With Garry starting to get off on his feet, Rakhmonov switches things up and attacks Garry’s legs, landing the first takedown of the fight in round four. Garry scrambled his way out of the position, but instead of disengaging, he tried to grapple with Rakhmonov and ultimately gave up his back against the fence. Still, Garry was able to fend off Rakhmonov, but that only encouraged ‘Nomad’ to shoot in and land another double-leg takedown, putting him in a dominant position to end the penultimate round.

With Garry likely behind on the scorecards and in need of a finish, ‘The Future’ came out swinging, but that opened him up for another takedown attempt. Rakhmonov shot in and looked to land a single leg, but Garry defended and ended up taking Rakhmonov’s back. With a body triangle locked in, Garry fought hard to land a rear-naked choke. Rakhmonov kept his chin down and fought the hands before reversing the position and getting on top of Garry.

Garry wall-walked his way back up, but Rakhmonov maintained control against the cage and essentially rode out the remainder of the fight in the clinch.

Joaquin Buckley Predicts Ian Garry Will Outsmart Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310

Top UFC welterweight Joaquin Buckley believes that Ireland’s Ian Garry will out-maneuver Shavkat Rakhmonov when the two undefeated fighters meet at UFC 310 booked for December 7.

Joaquin Buckley Talks Ian Garry vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov

Nomad’ Shavkat Rakhmonov, of Kazakhstan, has a perfect unbeaten record at 18-0, but most impressively he has a 100% finish rate with all of his wins coming by way of KO/TKO or submission. Many fans have dubbed the 30-year-old fighter a future champion. At UFC 310, he is set to have the most important match of his career in a five-round title eliminator against Ian Garry.

The Irish-born Ian Machado Garry has a perfect 15-0 record in MMA and is a divisive figure in the fandom. In his most recent bouts, he won close decisions against Michael ‘Venom’ Page and Geoff Neal. He is primarily a striker with a quality pull counter but is able to gameplan and mix in wrestling and clinching to earn victories. This intelligence will be key according to ‘New Mansa‘ Joaquin Buckley.

Speaking to James Lynch, Joaquin Buckley explained his outlook on the fight. He said:

“A lot of people are not gonna believe me, but I think Ian Garry is gonna win. Wins by the skin of his teeth just like the rest of his wins that he had. Whether that’s with MVP or with Geoff Neal, he does a good job of staying safe and surviving. And if you don’t have the feet to kind of hunt down guys like that, where they’re constantly moving and constantly evading, and you set up traps, obviously, you’re not gonna be able to land those power shots

“If you get in the fire with Shavkat Rakhmonov, you’re gonna get burned, but I don’t see Ian Garry running into that burning house. So he’s gonna try to flee and evade the whole time, and I can see Ian Garry getting his hand raised by decision.”

‘New Mansa’ Joaquin Buckley will next be fighting in the UFC main event on December 14 against the motor-mouthed Colby Covington. The US-born Buckley will be looking to make it six in a row in the competitive welterweight division.
