If Ian Machado Garry needs a reminder of how things went when he trained with Shavkat Rakhmonov, ‘Nomad’ is more than happy to remind him.

Returning to the Octagon to open the UFC 303 main card, ‘The Future’ extended his unbeaten streak to 15, 8-0 in the UFC, with a solid three-round performance against former Bellator MMA standout Michael ‘Venom’ Page. Though Dana White felt the fight was a draw, Garry did enough to get the nod on all three judges’ scorecards, keeping his ‘O’ intact.

Addressing media members following his big win, Garry clarified that he wanted to fight up the rankings his next time out and had one particular name in mind.

“I’m gonna have a chat with Hunter [Campbell] and Dana [White] to figure out what’s next,” Garry said at the post-fight press conference. “There’s some big names, there’s some cool matchups. This Shavkat [Rakhmonov], 18-0 undefeated. I’d love to get my hands on him. I’ve trained with him. I have nothing, but respect for the guy, but I want to be the first guy to take his ‘O’ and I know I can do it. I just beat the fastest guy in the division, other than me, when it comes to striking and skills so I know I can do it.

“When it comes to grappling, we’ve seen the growth that I have. I’m excited to go out there and prove it against someone like him.”

Though Garry did not give any additional insight into how their training sessions went, Rakhmonov was more than happy to enlighten fans on social media while offering Garry a stern reminder of their time in the gym, should he so desire it.

“Looks like Ian forgot what happened during those training sessions,” Rakhmonov wrote on X. “I don’t mind reminding him in the future.”

Is Shavkat Rakhmonov ready to put his ranking on the line against Ian Machado Garry?

As it stands, Rakhmonov is sitting in the No. 3 spot in the welterweight rankings, four slots above Garry, though that could change depending on how the Irishman’s win over the No. 14 ranked ‘Venom’ affects his own position in the rankings. Regardless, ‘Nomad’ is, by all accounts, the next man in line for a title opportunity once reigning champion Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad take care of a bit of business on July 27.

However, it sounds like Rakhmonov is more than willing to put his spot in line at stake for an opportunity to hand Ian Machado Garry his first loss and shut the Irishman’s mouth on MMA’s biggest stage.

Does Garry stand a chance against ‘Nomad’ and his 100% finish rate, or is ‘The Future’ biting off a bit more than he can chew this time around? Perhaps we’ll find out soon enough.

After moving to 15-0 with a solid performance against ‘MVP’ at UFC 303, Ian Machado Garry has his sights set on taking Shavkat Rakhmonov’s ‘O.’

Garry returned to the Octagon on Saturday night and scored himself a unanimous decision victory over Michael ‘Venom’ Page in the evening’s main card opener. For three rounds, Garry executed a perfect game plan that saw him largely stifle Page’s unorthodox striking style, handing ‘Venom’ just his third career loss in 14 years.

Given Page was sitting seven spots below ‘The Future’ in the welterweight rankings, it’s unclear what impact, if any, Garry’s win will have on his position in the division. Regardless of that, the Irishman is ready for another step up in competition.

“I’m gonna have a chat with Hunter [Campbell] and Dana [White] to figure out what’s next,” Garry said at the post-fight press conference. “There’s some big names, there’s some cool matchups. Is Ian Machado Garry the right fight for Shavkat Rakhmonov?

Shavkat Rakhmonov is a perfect 18-0 in his mixed martial arts career with six of those wins coming inside the Octagon. Perhaps even more impressive is his 100% finish rate, including eight knockouts and 10 submissions.

Rakhmonov’s last appearance went down at UFC 296 in December where he scored a second-round rear-naked choke against Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

Shavkat submits 'Wonderboy'

That moved ‘Nomad’ to the No. 3 spot in the welterweight rankings with the only two fighters above him being Belal Muhammad and ex-champion Kamaru Usman.

Ian Garry son does impressions of Conor McGregor Alex Pereira UFC 303

Ian Garry has said Conor McGregor is a key reason why he pursued MMA and made it to the UFC, and now his son is showing off an impression of the Irishman.

Garry and his wife Layla had a son in October of 2022 and ahead of Garry’s fight at UFC 303, the Irishman brought him around his media obligations. During his visit with the commentators, Ian Garry got his son to show off the Irishman impression which made Daniel Cormier laugh as he had the patented ‘mili’ walk.

It was a funny impression from Garry’s son, who also did a Max Holloway impression pointing down to the floor which made Megan Olivi, Cormier, and Jon Anik start bursting out in laughing. Cormier is even heard saying this kid is awesome for his impressions.

Ian Garry says he’s still not interested in Michael Page fight

Ian Garry is set to return to the Octagon on the main card of UFC 303 on Saturday against Michael Page. It’s an interesting matchup between two high-level strikers, but in the lead-up to the fight, Garry has said he isn’t interested in the fight.

“I’m still not interested in it,” Garry said about the fight with Page on The MMA Hour. “I have no interest in it. I’ve told you. Here’s the way I look at it: I’m undefeated, I’ve beaten everybody put in front of me in the best way I believe I can and I go out there and I get my hand raised any way, shape and form possible. That is my job. When I do that, I fight up because my goal is to be the world champion.

“I’m looking at the guys above me. There’s six or seven guys ahead of me. There’s Gilbert [Burns], there’s Shavkat [Rakhmonov], there’s Jack Della Maddalena, there’s Colby [Covington], there’s [Kamaru] Usman, Belal [Muhammad] and Leon [Edwards]. All I’ve done in my career is win. I deserve to fight one of those guys. I have to fight one of those guys because that is my projection.”

“I’m on a projection to be one of the world champions. I’m on a projection to be one of the biggest stars the sport’s ever seen. I have no interest in fighting below me. I’ve already fought [No.] 15 in the world, 10 in the world, 8 in the world, why on Earth would I want to fight No. 13? I still have no interest in fighting Michael. I have no interest in fighting him,” Garry added.

Ian Machado Garry believes he is “levels above” MVP.

Riding into UFC 303 with a picture-perfect 14-0 record, seven of those wins coming inside the Octagon, ‘The Future’ will face his toughest test yet when he squares off with former Bellator standout Michael ‘Venom’ Page.

Ian Machado Garry vs. MVP

Considering he’s ranked seven spots higher than ‘Venom’ in the welterweight top 15, Garry wasn’t exactly thrilled about the matchmaking but admits that his decision to sign on the dotted line ultimately came down to availability.

“I wasn’t remotely interested in this fight, I’m not going to lie,” Garry said in an interview with Lucky Block. “I was looking for a top-five opponent, but there was no one available above me to fight. So now I had no choice if I wanted to fight.

“But to look down and go, ‘Who’s the biggest name? Who’s the biggest test that UFC fans want to see me go up against?’ – everyone was saying Michael Page, then that’s the one guy to make it happen with. But I wasn’t remotely interested in fighting him.”

Ian Machado Garry plans to make an example out of ‘Venom’

As for how Garry sees things playing out, the Irishman is confident that his skill set is far above that of Page, who will be making his second appearance for the promotion following a mostly uninspiring performance against Kevin Holland in March.

MVP vs. Holland

“I believe I’m levels above him in every single way, shape and form, and this is just an opportunity to show it, to prove it to people,” Garry said. “I can go, ‘You guys think this guy is good?’ OK, let’s see when he shows up on June 29 in Las Vegas. Let’s see when we stand in that octagon, I’ll use him as an example.”

Michael 'Venom' Page eyeing fight with Kamaru Usman after UFC 303 clash with Ian Machado Garry

Michael ‘Venom’ Page believes a win over Ian Machado Garry will put him within reach of his first UFC title opportunity.

After besting Kevin Holland in his promotional debut at UFC 299 in March, Page will return to the Octagon on Saturday, June 29 for a clash with the undefeated Irishman. With ‘The Future’ sitting as the No. 7 ranked contender in the welterweight division, the bout will carry with it some serious title implications for both men.

Ian Garry vs. Michael 'Venom' Page

Speaking with Chamatkar Sandhu, Page believes that a win over Garry will get him within earshot of reigning 170-pound king Leon Edwards, but he’ll likely need one more W to push him over the edge.

“I believe there will be one more fight in between for me,” Page said. “If I want to bring it back to the UK, there will most likely be one more fight. They usually do a show [in the UK] in March or something, so if I can get one more fight by the end of the year, that’ll be the perfect way to sign off the year.”

As for who that “one more” could come against, ‘Venom’ has the perfect opponent in mind.

“If I finish Ian, then maybe [Kamaru] Usman,” he continued. “Get a big fight next. He’s number one ranked. Again, like I said, there’s no point wasting time. Let’s jump up. Let’s go. Ask for Usman if he’s happy to go, we go. Get that win and then people… There’s no debate after that. I deserve the belt.”

Kamaru Usman

Kamaru Usman was not impressive with Michael ‘Venom’ page’s UFC debut

Following Michael Page’s UFC debut, Usman admitted to being a fan of ‘Venom,’ though he couldn’t help but be a bit underwhelmed by the former Bellator star’s premiere appearance inside the Octagon.

“It was a good showing,” Usman said on his Pound-4-Pound podcast. “Let’s just start with the entrance, the entrance was great. I like ‘MVP,’ I like the fact that he had the confidence to come in and do that, entrance was great… Now, based on that entrance, I would have liked to see him fight a little bit more- he’s definitely capable of something greater than what he put out” (h/t MMA News).

After losing back-to-back bouts against Leon Edwards, the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ came up short against Khamzat Chimaev after stepping in on nine days’ notice to face ‘Borz’ at UFC 294 in October. Now sitting on a three-fight skid, Usman is in no rush to return but fully intends on chasing gold once he’s ready to strap on the four-ounce gloves again.
