It can be hard to find a way back out when a person heads down the wrong path in life, especially if they fall into the trap of becoming entrenched in gang culture, where the threat of death or prison always looms large over their heads.

Some fighters know this only too well and can ruefully speak from first-hand experience, but for them, there was an escape route from the chaotic life they were leading, with mixed martial arts proving to be their salvation.

In this article we’ll look at 10 such cases, exploring the often bleak and tragic circumstances that led to their decision to join a gang in the first place, the trouble it caused them, and how pursuing a career in MMA helped turn their lives around and lead them all the way to the UFC.

Tito Ortiz

UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz rose to become one of the most famous fighters ever to compete in the sport, which is quite an achievement when you consider his childhood.

Both of his parents were heroin addicts, so Ortiz was fending for himself on the streets of Santa Ana, California, from an early age.

As young as five years old, Ortiz had already drunk beer and smoked cigarettes, and by nine he’d joined one of the region’s most notorious gangs, ‘F-Troop,’ after going through their initiation beating which saw him repeatedly sucker-punched by other members to prove his toughness.

According to Ortiz in his biography, ‘This Is Going To Hurt,’ he was soon getting into trouble doing “hoodlum stuff,” and in the years that followed he robbed houses and cars, fought rival gangs, tried “just about every drug there was to do except heroin,” and was “in and out of juvenile hall.”

After one of Ortiz’s friends was shot and killed next to him in a drive-by shooting, his mother moved with him to Huntington Beach, and with the police cracking down on gang culture in that area, Ortiz would turn his attention to wrestling and slowly but surely, he moved away from his troubled past and set out on a new path in mixed martial arts that would lead to him becoming a UFC champion.

One week after publicly announcing his release from the UFC, former flyweight title contender Ian McCall already has a new promotion.

News came from MMA Junkie today (Mon., October 16, 2017) that McCall has signed with Japanese promotion Rizin FF and will compete in the second round of their upcoming bantamweight Grand Prix when he takes on 23-year-old Manel Kape. The event, Rizin FF 8: World Grand Prix Second Round, will take place on December 29 from Japan’s famed Saitama Super Arena.

It’s an odd set of circumstances for “Uncle Creepy,” who has fought only one single time since 2014, losing a hard-fought decision to John Lineker. Since then, he’s been scheduled to fight several times, but for one reason or another involving injuries, illness, and weight-cutting issues, McCall has been unable to fight and therefore asked for his release from the UFC.

He got it, and now he could be fighting three times in three days after fighting once in three years. He’ll meet a rising prospect in the 7-1 Kape, who knocked out Erson Yamamoto in the opening round of the bantamweight GP last weekend.

The two squared off in a heated staredown on social media today:

Fan favorite flyweight Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall has been granted his release from his UFC contract after a two-year absence from the game.

McCall last fought at UFC 183, when he dropped a decision loss to John Lineker. Several bouts since then have fallen through, either from McCall’s injuries and illnesses or his scheduled opponents’.

McCall revealed his situation on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour:

“I’m a free agent now. If I’m gonna fight, I want to fight for at least $100,000, 50 and 50 is fine.

“I’m gonna take this, go to a different market and see if it works.”

McCall is the last man to fight Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and not lose, taking the eventual champ to a draw back in 2012. Since then, “Uncle Creepy” has been beset by stomach and intestinal issues that have forced him out of several fights.

With his UFC contract stuck at $16,000 to show and $16,0000 to win, he said it just wasn’t worth his health for the money he was making.

Now a free agent, McCall says he’s looking for an increase in pay, and he’ll take it wherever he can get it, even if that means fighting for the much-maligned Chechen warlord Ramzan Kadyrov’s promotion.

“People say, ‘You don’t care that it’s blood money?’ I don’t give a flying f— that it’s blood money. You can pay me in blood diamonds,” McCall told ESPN. “I get into a cage and fist fight for money. I don’t care. I don’t live there.

“Of course what he’s doing is wrong,” McCall said of Kadyrov. “I don’t agree with it and would say it to his face, but it’s none of my business. My business is to go over there and fist fight. That’s it. Sure, war is bad and guys like that do evil s—. But I don’t care.”
