Rising star Israel Adesanya thinks middleweight champion Robert Whittaker should be stripped of his title.

The fight game is a cruel sport. First Kelvin Gastelum proclaimed himself the “new” middleweight champ after Whittaker was forced to undergo emergency surgery to repair a hernia and a collapsed bowel. Adesanya continues to weigh in on the subject.

‘The Last Stylebender’ isn’t opposed to fighting Gastelum in Whittaker’s absence. He just believes the fight should be for the 185-pound title after Whittaker gets stripped.

“I think Robert should get stripped,” Adesanya said on The MMA Hour. “When he gets healthy, he could be the number one contender, so me and Kelvin should fight for the real belt.”

As unfortunate as Whittaker’s situation is, Adesanya has a valid point. Since winning the middleweight title in July 2017 and earning the official title when Georges St-Pierre vacated it, he is yet to officially defend it. According to Adesanya, it is very reminiscent of another former champion.

“This is not the first time that he’s had to pull out due to injury or something like that and Dominick Cruz, eventually he got stripped,” Adesanya said.

“Stylebender” speculated whether or not it was the champion’s training. Then, Adesanya took a very subtle dig at “The Reaper.”

“Maybe it’s because of his training, maybe it’s because of the way he, I don’t know what his training is like,” Adesanya said. “But I look after myself. I don’t know what causes hernias, I’ve seen how they happen and whatnot but I don’t know what causes it exactly. But, yeah. I look after myself. I show up.”

“F*ck the interim,” Adesanya said. “Strip Rob, we fight for the real belt, and when he’s healthy he can come see me.”

After his incredible performance at UFC 234, Dana White has proclaimed Israel Adesanya has ‘got it.’

It is hard to disagree with the boss man. “Stylebender” has rattled off five quick wins since first entering the Octagon in February of 2018. Few fighters compete five times in a 12-month span. And fewer win all five fights impressively.

“The kid’s got ‘it.’” White said at the UFC 234 post-fight press conference (h/t MMAFighting). “He’s got that — not only is he talented in the Octagon, he’s talented outside of it too. His interviews are exciting, he’s an interesting guy. He’s fun to watch. And I think he’s got a really bright future here.”

White was giddy, almost childlike when he spoke of the ‘kung fu’ movie that was Silva vs Adesanya.

“It was fun,” White said. “That first round was like a kung fu movie. It was a fun fight to watch, very fun. Two guys who are incredibly talented. I was saying yesterday, any oddsmakers that make Anderson Silva 7-to-1 is out of their mind. The guy’s always taking care of himself, he’s a great martial artist, and that was a fun fight.”

“But Israel went in with a sold-out house tonight, a lot of pressure on him to go in against the guy — you know, Anderson’s [43] years old, he’s supposed to go in and beat Anderson, but those are the kind of positions you’re in that you’ve got a lot of pressure on you. Anderson even said, ‘All the pressure’s on him. There’s none on me.’”

Due to Robert Whittaker’s unfortunate injury and subsequent surgery, the middleweight title picture is on hold. Both Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum seem to think they are the number one contender.

Things are about to get interesting.

“The Last Stylebender” picked up the biggest win of his career this past weekend (Sat. February 9, 2019). He defeated former 185-pound champion Anderson Silva via unanimous decision. The two dynamic strikers headlined the UFC 234 on pay-per-view (PPV) from Melbourne, Australia.

With the victory, Adesanya is now the No. 5-ranked middleweight in the UFC. He changed spots with former champ Chris Weidman, who fell to No. 6 as a result of “Stylebender’s” win. It’s believed the Nigerian-born combatant could challenge for the middleweight title in his next fight. But the curious situation of injured champion Robert Whittaker has to play out first.

In terms of other ranking movement, UFC 234 featured precious few other bouts with actual ranking implications. Rising women’s flyweight competitor Montana De La Rose rose three spots to No. 11 for her win over unranked Nadia Kassem. Ricky Simon made his debut on the bantamweight ranks at No. 14.
