UFC Live Aftermath: PSAC Says Marquardt’s Issue Was Not a Failed Drug Test

Bleacher Report’s John Heinis:

While various questions still remain in regards to Nate Marquardt’s bizarre failed medical test situation, PSAC executive director Gregory Sirb told MMA Fighting that Marquardt did not fail a drug test.

Additionally, Sirb indicated that Marquardt was actually licensed to fight in the main event of UFC on Versus 4.

“He was licensed. He completed all of his paperwork for licensing probably a week before,” Sirb clarified.

Unfortunately for Nate “The Great,” licensing in any state comes pending with a passed set of medical tests.

As fans, fighters, and analysts alike anxiously await for the former middleweight contender to address the situation on Ariel Helwani’s “The MMA Hour,” Sirb explained:

Jake-Off: Shields vs. Ellenberger Reported for This Fall

According to a new report from MMAFighting, UFC welterweight contenders Jake Shields and Jake Ellenberger have agreed to face each other this fall (event TBA). Shields is coming off his unsuccessful title bid against Georges St. Pierre in April — which snapped a 15-fight win streak — while the surging Ellenberger has scored wins in his last four Octagon appearances, including knockouts of Mike Pyle, John Howard, and Sean Pierson.

As you may recall, Ellenberger has been openly campaigning for this matchup ever since Shields’s underwhelming UFC debut against Martin Kampmann last October. Following that fight, Ellenberger harnessed his inner Chael Sonnen, tweeting “Jake Shields, you’re as exciting as watching a bowl of mash potatoes get cold…Your days are numbered…Jake Shields’ cardio won’t be a factor if he fights me next. I won’t keep him around long enough to get tired.”

Ellenberger was similarly unimpressed after UFC 129, sayingIf they do make that match and me and Jake get to fight, he’s not a hard guy to figure out. I feel like I can beat him right now.”

Ellenberger certainly doesn’t lack confidence, and a win here would launch him into the title mix at welterweight. Meanwhile, Shields will need a strong performance to prove he was ever worth the hype in the first place. Any early predictions? We don’t have anything else to add about this story right now, so instead, we’ll just post this recent photo of Jason Miller that Ellenberger tweeted last week. Looking good, Mayhem.

Total Chaos!

That is pretty much the best way to sum up the UFC welterweight coming off Charlie Brenneman’s upset victory over Rick Story.

Story had a ton of momentum and then cracked the top 10 worldwide rankings a month ago with his victory over Thiago Alves.

Then, due to some insane matchmaking shuffles, Story ends up taking on Brenneman and getting outpointed by the decorated wrestler.

It was not a tremendous surprise based off of the stylistic match-up- but it sure leaves rankings an absolute mess to figure out.

That is why I will go ahead and do it for you. Do not worry. I am right. You’re welcome.

I present the top 10 welterweights in the UFC…. (and if you are wondering, yes, Nick Diaz counts)

Ask and ye shall receive.

It’s been less than a week since Jake Shields went on record saying that he is feeling the itch to fight again and is interested in seeing who the Ultimate Fighting Championship has for him.

According the MMAfighting.com, the UFC has quickly answered Shields’s call, proposing a match up against rising star Jake Ellenberger.

The fight has not yet been made official, but it has been speculated that it may take place in San Jose at an event the UFC is planning to have there on Nov. 19.

It’s the first the time MMA‘s most prominent organization has held an event in San Jose, so it will likely be wanting to put on a good show, and Shields vs. Ellenberger is a fight fans could definitely get excited about.

Ellenberger has actually been asking for this fight for a while now. He believes that he has the tools to defeat Shields and that a win over Shields would put himself directly in line for the title.

It’s a risky move, calling out Shields, but the pay off could be huge.

Shields was considered for a long time to be one of the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in the world. He owns victories over many of the sport’s greats, such as Dan Henderson, Jason Miller, Yushin Okami and Carlos Condit.

Ellenberger has himself a pretty respectable resume with wins over the likes of John Howard and Mike Pyle, but Shields would by far be the greatest test he has faced so far in his career.

Both men have strong wrestling backgrounds, so a very technical ground war is a possibility in this one. However, Shields is known for having very good Brazilian jiu-jitsu, so Ellenberger might want to use his wrestling in reverse to keep this fight standing.

Jake ShieldsFollowing his unanimous decision UFC welterweight title loss in April, Jake Shields likely will next face surging 170-pounder Jake Ellenberger.

Though the fight has not yet been made official by the UFC, sources close to the bout confirmed to MMA Fighting last week that the fighters have agreed to the planned matchup for this fall.

While a location for the fight is not yet certain, one possibility is the UFC’s planned Nov. 19 card in San Jose, Calif. That will be the promotion’s debut in the northern California city, about 40 miles south of the San Francisco Bay area, where Shields lives and trains. That event is likely to be UFC 138, though it has not yet been made official by the UFC.

It’s a fight that Ellenberger hasn’t been shy about asking for. In May, he told several news outlets he wanted to fight Shields, and believed he has what it takes to beat him.

Shields (26-5-1, 1-1 UFC) lost for the first time in six and a half years and saw his 15-fight winning streak snapped against St-Pierre. Ellenberger (25-5, 4-1 UFC) has won four straight, including a first-round knockout of Sean Pierson at UFC 129.

Shields 15-fight streak included wins over Yushin Okami, Carlos Condit, Paul Daley, Robbie Lawler, Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Dan Henderson – yet Shields flew under many mainstream MMA radars until he signed with the UFC in the fall of 2010.

Shields, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion, challenged UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129 in April after just one fight in the promotion. Opinions on the fight ranged from dominance by St-Pierre (one judge scored the fight 50-45) to the champ just barely getting by (two judges scored it 48-47).

Ellenberger (25-5, 4-1 UFC) has won four straight – three by KO or TKO. At UFC 129, he knocked out Sean Pierson in the first round. Ellenberger took that fight on less than three weeks notice, filling in for an injured Brian Foster.

Ellenberger has a strong wrestling background and is an assistant wrestling coach for the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Before signing with the UFC in 2009, Ellenberger fought for Bellator, M-1, IFL and Bodog, among other regional promotions.
