James Toney Announces He’s “Seen Fear” in Randy Couture’s Eyes

Just days removed from Saturday’s UFC 118, James Toney continues to toss smack at Randy “The Natural” Couture, further increasing what could very well be, one of the largest helpings of humble pie the sport of MMA has ever seen (Chael Sonnen escaped that humiliation by dominating Anderson Silva for nearly five rounds). That is of course if the decorated boxer loses…no worries right? (Cue nervous laughter).

Really, even if Couture does smash Toney in under two minutes, it probably won’t silence the heavyweight too, too much, but seeing him get bowled over by “Captain America” would be damn satisfying for most MMA fans. So what’s the latest word from Mr. ‘Trust me I got this’ Toney? Speaking at today’s pre-fight UFC 118 presser, the boxing champ revealed:

“I seen fear,” Toney told MMAjunkie.com at Thursday’s media workout session. “I smelled it, too.”…”Everybody can sit there and say, ‘Oh, Randy was tough. He was cool.’ All the Randy Couture fans were [saying that]. Up close and personal, you could see it in his eyes. He ain’t never seen nobody like me in his life.”

Curious; what does fear smell like? Is there a feint (or strong) presence of urine? At any rate, Toney’s right, Couture has never faced anyone like him in his life, but that doesn’t change the fact that 9 out of 10 times The Natural should win that fight. To bet on that tilt, or any other at UFC 118, head here.

The hype behind this weekend’s James Toney-Randy Couture showdown has focused largely around the "Is MMA better than Boxing?" quandary, which, up until this point has never really been answered, and in my opinion really won’t be answered by this fight.

The question really should be "Who would win in a fight between a top-tier boxer and a top-tier MMA fighter?"

BOSTON — Round one goes to James Toney.

The champion boxer turned mixed martial artist who makes his MMA debut at Saturday’s UFC 118, captured the lion’s share of the media attention during the first day of fight week.

During a pre-fight press conference at the historic Faneuil Hall, Toney overshadowed five-time, multi-divisional UFC champ Randy Couture, who will be opposing him on Saturdday.

It’s something of a new role for Couture, who is quite used to the spotlight; in every fight he’s been a part of for the last five years, he’s been in the main event. This one is the co-main event, and so he’s not only in the second-billed fight, he also has to deal with Toney’s incessant promotion.

Fanhouse’s Ariel Helwani caught up with BJ Penn in Boston today ahead of his UFC 118 showdown with Frankie Edgar and he asked the former UFC lightweight champion if he thought James Toney beating Randy Couture would set the sport back.

In typical Penn fashion, "The Prodigy" had an interesting take on the situation.

"What’s worse than having the WWF champ [as] our heavyweight champ? That ain’t worse than having James Toney come out and win a fight. It’s great for the sport. James Toney is God’s gift to MMA right now," BJ asserted. "He’s promoting the sport; he’s telling everyone to go out and buy tickets, You can’t ask for a better guy than that. What James Toney is doing is putting more money in everybody’s pocket."

Penn also spoke about his rematch with Edgar Saturday night and his strained relationship with UFC president Dana White, which stem from some comments he made about his business dealings with Zuffa in his biography, "Why I fight."
