James Toney, the soon-to-be 42-year-old pro boxer who was a two-time Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year, is preparing to take up a new sport when he steps inside the Octagon for a mixed martial arts fight with Randy Couture on Aug. 28 at UFC 118. But he’ll take some time out of his preparation on Wednesday to participate in a live chat with MMA and boxing fans here at MMAFighting.com.
If you want to know why Toney decided to give MMA a try, where he stands on the “boxing vs. MMA” debate, and how he views Couture as an opponent, this is your chance to ask him. The live chat begins Wednesday at 1:25PM ET.

Randy Couture told us last week that he didn’t view his UFC 118 fight against James Toney as "boxing vs. MMA." Well too freakin’ bad, because that’s exactly how the UFC is marketing it (0:18). While we’re very familiar with Dark Gable’s barely-coherent YouTube rants, this advance trailer for Edgar vs. Penn 2 is the first time that Toney’s been a part of an official UFC hype-clip. And he makes the most of his eight-second appearance, telling Randy, "Hey princess…I’mma gitch’oo," then slugging a speed-bag. Genius. Also, Frank Edgar raises the possibility of a second win over BJ Penn, and the narrator sounds like he’s stifling a burp during the "only on pay-per-view" line. If that’s not enough to get your $44.99, we don’t know what to tell you.
We’ve tried (as best we can) to keep our readers up to speed on the ‘what will he say next’ watch for James Toney, as the renowned boxer continues to prepare for his MMA debut against Randy Couture, August 28th. We’ve tried (as best we can) to keep our readers up to speed on the ‘what will he say next’ watch for James Toney, as the renowned boxer continues to prepare for his MMA debut against Randy Couture, August 28th. If you’ve followed Mr. Toney’s pugilistic career to date, then you know that the boxing champ isn’t exactly known for clamming up when a mic is around, and not much has changed on that front as he prepares to face Couture. If you’re a MMA loyalist then you’ve likely either laughed hysterically, or perhaps even tried to tear up your wasting time / working on the computer bib, while reading comments like this.
Well, it seems like Jon Jones has also been monitoring Toney’s rhetoric heading into his Octagon debut at UFC 118, as according to a report on MMA Bay, the rising prospect was recently quoted saying on Tapout radio:
“Do you really think you’re going to uppercut a collegiate wrestler when he’s coming full force into a double leg dive? I think he [James Toney] is just really naive to think that with hand combinations alone he’s going to be able to defend takedowns from the clinch and double leg dives. So I think he’s just ignorant in a way and I don’t really have a hard time calling him ignorant because of some of the statements he’s made about our sport.”
You’ll find no disagreements here Jon (not that we would necessarily have the balls to tell you otherwise even if we thought otherwise…). If Toney does find a way to KO Couture…wow…you think Toney is pissing off some MMA fans now?
After opening the door to James Toney, the UFC better get used to other boxers trying to wedge their way into the octagon.
The newest name on the list? Australian boxer and IBO cruiserweight champ Danny Green, who claims he wants to face Brock Lesnar next February, when the UFC likely returns to his home country. The cruiserweight division, for those of you who don’t follow boxing, goes up to 200 pounds. According to BoxRec.com, Green weighed in at 184.75 for his last fight, meaning he’d give up around 80 pounds in the hypothetical matchup against the UFC heavyweight champion that will never, ever, in a million years happen.
Of course, there’s a huge caveat to Green’s interest anyway: He wants to fight under amended rules.

Randy Couture Discusses The Expendables, UFC 118 Fight With Ja – Watch more Funny Videos (Randy is one of those strong, soft-spoken types, and unfortunately my camera didn’t do a great job of picking up his audio, especially near the beginning. I recommend listening to this with headphones, at a decent volume.)
UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture was in New York yesterday doing press for his supporting role in The Expendables, and I got a chance to point my Flip cam at him for about 10 minutes and ask stupid questions. Couture revealed the secret behind Sylvester Stallone’s cartoonish forearms, weighed in on which member of the The Expendables is the toughest S.O.B. in real life, and explained why this movie was important to his budding movie career.
Of course, we also discussed his upcoming UFC 118 fight against James Toney. The Natural gives his thoughts on Toney’s off-the-wall trash talk, whether or not the match is a "freak show," and how he’s been preparing for Toney’s boxing skills. Some transcribed highlights are after the jump…
Since James Toney launched and then successfully completed his public campaign to sign with the UFC, it’s probably safe to say that the rather ‘talkative’ fighter has ruffled a few feathers amongst MMA fans. Since James Toney launched and then successfully completed his public campaign to sign with the UFC, it’s probably safe to say that the rather ‘talkative’ fighter has ruffled a few feathers amongst MMA fans. After all, from declaring ‘heads will go into orbit,’ fake dialling 911 for upcoming opponent Randy Couture, and stating that ‘MMA ain’t no different than boxing,’ Toney has been pretty, shall we say, ‘confident’ for a dude that’s still learning how to do deal with something other than a punch.
Of course, there have been reports that Toney is taking his upcoming UFC debut pretty serious, case in point, bringing in Strikeforce Light-Heavyweight Champion “King Mo” Lawal to be one of his training partners (guess you could do worse…). In a recent Fight Hype interview with the rising fighter / champ, Lawal had this to say about Toney’s personality and his MMA game.
“Ah, he cool as hell man. Him and Dave cool as hell. I see all of these zombies want to talk shit about him, but before you say he’s this or he’s that, walk up to him and meet him. If you see him, go and have a conversation with him to see what kind of dude he is. James is good people, man, and he’s great with his fans. James is working hard man and I said it before, he’s going to surprise a lot of people.”
We’ll leave it up to you to determine whether ‘surprise’ means 1) Toney shocks the MMA world by lasting more than 2 minutes with Couture, or 2) he actually beats “The Natural”. There’s kind of a big difference there.
