Jared Cannonier draws link to fight with Khamzat Chimaev I plead the fifth UFC

Despite featuring just earlier this month in the main event of UFC Vegas 75, streaking middleweight contender, Jared Cannonier may already have his next bout in the works, that’s according to Brendan Allen – who pleaded the fifth amendment after drawing links to a fight with the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev.

Cannonier, the current number three ranked middleweight contender, managed to turn in his second straight victory earlier this month at the UFC Apex facility, turning in a shutout win over fellow one-time title challenger, Marvin Vettori in an impressive striking performance.

Linked with a quickfire return against the above-mentioned unbeaten, Chimaev off the back of his win against Italian contender, Vettori, Cannonier dismissed the pairing initially, however, welcomed the bout if he was guaranteed a title shot with a win.

“Does that fight [with Khamzat Chimaev] give me a title shot?” Jared Cannonier after UFC Vegas 75. “I don’t know, he’s not even ranked in middleweight. So, I mean, I know he’s popular. Everybody wants to see him do his thing and stuff like that. If they call me and say, ‘Hey, how’s that for contenders match?’ That’s a yes.”

“I’m trying to get to the title,” Jared Cannonier explained. “I’m not just fighting to entertain you people. You know what I mean? I know you guys want to see it. I know it will be a good fight. If that fights get me the title shot, yes. I just beat number three. I’m not looking back. I’m looking forward. I’m looking at the champion, So if Dana (White) and Hunter (Campbell) say he’s between you and a champion, then that’s something we can talk about. But if you saying would you fight Khamzat and welcome him in the division, I’m like, does that give me to the title? That’s the question I’d have for you.”

Jared Cannonier continues to draw links to a fight with Khamzat Chimaev

And according to the aforenoted, Allen – who turned in another impressive submission win at UFC Jacksonville against Bruno Silva, Cannonier may have a fight in the works already – failing to rule out that it could come against Chechen-born finisher, Chimaev.

“First off, sorry to Ali [Abdelaziz] – he told me not to call anyone out that has a fight, or (Jared) Cannonier because he potentially has a fight from what we understand,” Brendan Allen told assembled media after UFC Jacksonville. “But I already memorized all that stuff, so I was like, sh*t, I gotta go with it. I’m sorry, I’ll just have to take the heat later, it’s better to ask for forgiveness.”

And when questioned about the possibility of a fight between Jared Cannonier and Khamzat Chimaev, Allen candidly said “I plead the fifth.”

Whilst initially shutting down the prospect of a matchup with the undefeated welterweight, Khamzat Chimaev following his record-setting UFC Vegad 75 victory over the course of last weekend, Jared Cannonier has been backed to hand the Chechen his first-ever professional loss, by head coach, Tim Welch.

Cannonier, who improved to 2-0 since he unsuccessfully challenged for middleweight gold back in July of last year during International Fight Week, turned in a dominant unanimous decision victory against fellow one-time title chaser, Marvin Vettori at the UFC Apex facility.

The Dallas native had previously returned to the winner’s enclosure back in December of last year in a main event fight against Sean Strickland, defeating the perennial contender in a close, debated split decision triumph.

Weighing up the prospect of fighting Chimaev next – with the AllStars MMA staple expected to make a move to the middleweight limit for his Octagon return, Cannonier claimed he would only entertain a bout if he was guaranteed a title tilt with a victory.

“Does that fight [with Khamzat Chimaev] give me a title shot?” Jared Cannonier after UFC Vegas 75. “I don’t know, he’s not even ranked in middleweight. So, I mean, I know he’s popular. Jared Cannonier backed to bring stern challenge to Khamzat Chimaev

However, according to Welch – who prominently trains incoming UFC 292 headliner and bantamweight contender, Sean O’Malley, Cannonier would likely *f*ck” Chimaev up if they ever shared the Octagon.

“Dude, him (Jared Cannonier) breaking the record, that much output from a big guy like that is f*cking next level,” Welch said on the TimboSugarShow podcast. “That much output, five rounds. I mean, who does he go against next? Someone was asking about Khamzat (Chimaev).

“He wants whatever’s gonna give him the title,” Welch explained. “But that would be f*cking sick. I think, [over] five rounds, Jared f*cks him up.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Israel Adesanya shocking reaction to Jared Cannonier's win at UFC Vegas 75

Undisputed middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya appeared wholly surprised by Jared Cannonier’s performance throughout last night’s UFC Vegas 75 headliner with Marvin Vettori – with the surging contender turning in a hugely active striking display.

Adesanya, the current undisputed middleweight champion and two-time gold holder under the promotion’s banner, ended his first reign as champion with a unanimous decision win over the aforenoted, Cannonier back in July of last year, before dropping his crown to Alex Pereira back in November of last year.

Turning in a pair of impressive wins since then, Cannonier, who entered last night’s outing as the #4 ranked contender, defeated Sean Strickland back in December in headlining clash, with last night’s striking-heavy judging win over Vettori coming as his second consecutive success.

Jared Cannonier catches Israel Adesanya’s attention again

Shutting down a fight with the undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev – unless a fight with the Chechen lands him a title fight, Cannonier’s outing appeared to surprise former opponent, Israel Adesanya – who simply tweeted, “bro” following the conclusion of UFC Vegas 75.

Also grabbing the attention of another former opponent, ex-middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker admitted that while he expected Cannonier to defeat Vettori – the former’s performance most definitely surprised him.

“I picked (Jared) Cannonier to win this fight, but I didn’t pick ‘this’ Cannonier,” Robert Whittaker told ESPN. “I didn’t envision seeing this pressure fighting Cannonier who just crowds and closing the gap. You sway during the fight Cannonier had Marvin’s hands a lot of the times because he was that close. I didn’t pick him coming out with this approach but it obviously worked to great effect.” (H/T MMA Mania)

En route to a title fight with the aforenoted, Israel Adesanya, Cannonier would turn in consecutive victories over both Kelvin Gastelum, as well as a brutal third round ground elbows KO win against common-foe, Derek Brunson.

Off the back of his impressive unanimous decision win over Marvin Vettori in last night’s UFC Vegas 75 headliner, one-time middleweight title challenger, Jared Cannonier has sights set on fighting for the division crown again, shutting down an immediate clash with undefeated welterweight, Khamzat Chimaev.

Cannonier, who entered last night’s headlining clash with Vettori as the #4 ranked middleweight contender, turned in a dominant victory over the Italian contender, adding to a prior win over Sean Strickland in a debated split decision performance back in December of last year.

Previously challenging for undisputed middleweight gold back in July of last year during International Fight Week, Cannonier suffered a unanimous decision loss to current gold holder, Israel Adesanya in a largely uneventful headlining clash.

Jared Cannonier lays down path to a Khamzat Chimaev fight

Expected to enter a title-eliminator in his next outing following his win over Vettori last night, Cannonier, who stressed his intention to fight for the middleweight title again, shut down suggestion of a fight with the unranked, Chimaev.

“Does that fight [with Khamzat Chimaev] give me a title shot?” Jared Cannonier asked assembled media following his UFC Vegas 75 win. “I don’t know, he’s not even ranked in middleweight. Marvin Vettori

In the UFC Vegas 75 main event, top five ranked middleweight contenders Jared Cannonier and Marvin Vettori met inside The APEX for a high-stakes contest with serious title implications.

Cannonier walked into the contest looking to string together a couple of wins in hopes of getting back to a UFC middleweight title rematch with reigning champion Israel Adesanya.

Thirty seconds into the contest, Marvin Vettori blasted Cannonier with a big left hand that had the ‘Killa Gorilla’ reeling. Vettori moved in to capitalize, but Cannonier was able to recover and re-center himself inside the Octagon. With his head clear, Cannonier landed a solid right hand of his own that popped Vettori’s head back.

Despite the brief scare in the opening round, Jared Cannonier pushed the pace in round two, walking down Vettori from the get-go. Vettori continued to move well, but Cannonier’s relentless pressure appeared to fatigue Vettori halfway through the second. Cannonier fired a leg kick that sent Vettori to the mat. Cannonier unleashed a flurry of strikes, but ‘The Italian Dream’ worked his way back up and managed to keep Cannonier at bay long enough to get out of the round.

The next two rounds saw Cannonier continue to march forward and deliver a record-breaking number of significant strikes for a middleweight matchup, but it wasn’t enough to finish Vettori. Looking to close things out in the fifth round, Cannonier once again poured on the pressure, but Vettori’s durability was on point, taking everything the ‘Killa Gorilla’ had and asking for more. In the end, Cannonier landed a record 249 significant strikes, the most in middleweight history, but not a single one of them could put Marvin Vettori to sleep.

Official Result: Jared Cannonier def. Marvin Vettori via unanimous decision (49-45, 49-45, 48-46)
