Brad Tavares Steps in Against Aaron Simpson at UFC 132; ‘Mayhem’ vs. Bisping Now Slated for TUF 14 Finale

With Jason Miller being drafted for a high-profile gig coaching The Ultimate Fighter, Mayhem’s original UFC return opponent Aaron Simpson was left without a dance partner. However, the UFC confirmed last night that Simpson will remain on the UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber 2 card (July 2, Las Vegas) against undefeated TUF 11 semi-finalist Brad Tavares.

Kind of a downgrade for Simpson in terms of name value, but Tavares (7-0) is one of the best prospects in the middleweight division, and is coming off a first-round knockout of Phil Baroni in January. During his stint on The Ultimate Fighter, he won three consecutive fights before being choked out by Court McGee in the semis, then outpointed Seth Baczynski at the Finale show.

As for Jason Miller, he and Michael Bisping will reportedly meet at the TUF 14 Finale on December 3rd — a shift from the usual tradition of rival TUF coaches fighting (or not fighting) at a subsequent pay-per-view card. Not a bad way to boost their Spike ratings, considering Mayhem’s basic-cable cred. No other bouts have been booked for the event.

TUF 14: The UFC Made the Right Move Picking Mayhem Miller and Michael Bisping

Jason “Mayhem” Miller was set to make his return to the UFC this summer against Aaron Simpson. Well, the tides have changed and now Mayhem will face Michael Bisping, not only inside the Octagon, but also as coach on The Ultimate Fighter 14.

Now that Mayhem has stepped up to be the guy everyone will be cheering for come the coaches bout, the UFC made the right decision here.

After an average year of The Ultimate Fighter and a season that has seen ratings drop, the UFC has picked arguably the one of the best pairings in recent years.

Everyone wants Bisping to be shut up, and here is the opportunity of a lifetime for Mayhem. A win here catapults him inside the top 10 middleweights and can reintroduce him to those fans who only follow the UFC.

Mayhem is an exciting personality and his wit will surely get under the skin of Bisping, who doesn’t take kindly to those who insult him. Hey, if Jorge Rivera can get to Bisping, how in the world will Bisping handle someone like Mayhem? If you’ve watched Mayhem’s show, Bully Beatdown, you know how Mayhem can get.

After all, that’s what makes the show successful. It is a reality show when you boil it down. A conflict between coaches and fighters is something that boosts ratings.

On top of the boost in ratings, it does give one good fight for whichever card they hold the coaches bout on. Mayhem isn’t a fighter to be played around with, and Bisping will very well know that. Mayhem is a man who—with a little more time—nearly had beaten Jake Shields by submission.

Not only that, but Mayhem also has some pretty good Brazilian jiu-jitsu that could give Bisping fits on the ground.

By the time the two fight, Mayhem could be just over a year removed from his last fight—a first-round submission victory over Kazushi Sakuraba.

All in all, this is the best move for the UFC, and I for one can’t wait for the Mayhem that will be caused this season.

Yeah, awful pun intended.

Michael Bisping, Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller Tapped as TUF 14 Coaches

Dana White announced this afternoon that British heel Michael Bisping and American goofball Jason “Mayhem” Miller will be the coaches on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, which will start filming soon with a cast of featherweight and bantamweight contestants.

The selection of Miller comes as a surprise, as he was already slated to fight Aaron Simpson in July, a match that now appears to be off. On the other hand, his outsized personality coupled with Bisping’s thin-skinned volatility is sure to produce the kind of excitement and interaction between the coaches that was completely lacking on TUF 13. So, good move, UFC.

Bisping was formerly a coach on TUF 9, leading British fighters Ross Pearson and James Wilks to success in the lightweight and welterweight brackets, but was later the victim of a devastating knockout at the hands of rival coach Dan Henderson. Miller has hosted three seasons of MTV’s Bully Beatdown, leading pro fighters like Jake Shields, Andrei Arlovski, and Eddie Alvarez to satisfying thrashings of untrained douchebags.

Jason “Mayhem” Miller is one of MMA’s most recognizable and notorious characters.

Known for his over the top entrances, being the host of MTV’s Bully Beatdown, and the infamous Strikeforce Brawl in Nashville last April,  Miller will be making his UFC return at UFC 132.

The July 2nd bout will be Miller’s first fight in the UFC since he lost to current welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 52.

During an Interview on Sherdog Radio Network’s “Savage Dog Show”, Miller discussed his upcoming fight against Aaron Simpson.

“They gave a list of guys and there were probably guys I could have beat easier, but screw that, man,” Miller said. “They’re giving out ‘Fight of the Night’ bonuses. They’re giving out ‘Submission of the Night’ bonuses. They’re giving out ‘Knock out of the Night’ bonuses. I’d like to be the first to get all three.”

While winning all three fight bonuses may not be possible, Miller is hoping to put on an exciting fight with Simpson.

Known for his aggressive style, Simpson has won six of his eight wins by (T)KO, including a “Knock Out of the Night” performance in his first UFC fight.

Miller expects him to come out with that same style in their fight.

“I expect him to try to come in and try to hit me with that [big] right hand,” Miller said. “Luckily I’ve sparred with Dan Henderson for years, so I’m pretty good with not getting hit with the right hand. He can throw that thing. He’s a strong dude. He’s well rounded. He can wrestle and everything. He’s good at everything. I’m expecting a fantastic fight.”

Whether or not Mayhem can get any or all three fight bonuses, expect this fight to be exciting.

Judgment Day: 7 MMA Fighters Who Will Benefit From the End of the World

Ben Henderson angel wings tattoo back UFC MMA fighter
(Bendo: Prepared for takeoff.)

According to some misguided crazy people, the world is going to end tomorrow. Apparently, May 21st, 2011 is the scheduled date of the Rapture, in which Christians will be shuttled off into the air to meet Christ, while the sinners will be left behind, leading to Armageddon or something. (For more information, consult this Kirk Cameron movie). If the rumors are true, we’re all pretty much fucked. Still, there’s a few MMA fighters who will be getting the sweet end of the deal. For instance…

BEN HENDERSON
The lightweight standout is one of the more vocal supporters of his Lord and Savior in the cage, shouting out Philippians 4:13 after every win. He makes his fight entrances to gospel music, and has never touched alcohol. Whatever bad stuff goes down tomorrow, he won’t be around for it. He’ll be in mid-air, doing that pyramid thing with his hands.

CHAEL SONNEN
Chael Sonnen UFC photos
Stripped of his real estate and fighting licenses, Sonnen was just sentenced to a year of roaming the earth with no income, trying to “promote goodwill” and show that he’s rehabilitated. A swift, violent end would probably be an upgrade at this point.

RICHARD HALE AND CHRISTIAN M’PUMBU
Richard Hale Christian M'Pumbu
For what it’s worth, tomorrow’s Bellator 45 light-heavyweight tournament headliner in Lake Charles, Louisiana, will be the last televised MMA match of the day in this country. If God can hold off the rapture until the end of the night, Hale vs. M’Pumbu could very well be the last televised MMA match ever. That’s pretty damn historic. Not that we’ll care much about history in the post-rapture chaos, but still.

VITOR BELFORT

Famously, Vitor Belfort is the guy who expect Jesus, bro, every day. How psyched is he going to be when Jesus actually shows up on a random Saturday? All the hardships he’s suffered in his life were only tests from God. Now that he’s proven his devotion, he’ll be one of the first to be lifted off his feet, while Stankie stands there earthbound and furious, cursing his fancy ass.

JASON MILLER
Jason Miller Mayhem atheist judgment day may 21 2011
Mayhem’s a “devout atheist” who once told a Mormon interviewer, “after my victory, I would like to thank science.” I can see him and Joe Rogan holed up in a bunker following the rapture, splitting a bottle of wine and discussing the mysteries of the universe. It’ll suck to have their cynical anti-beliefs proven wrong so dramatically, but for one sweet moment, they won’t be surrounded by so many assholes.

Should MMA fans expect “Mayhem” in Jason Miller’s return at UFC 132?

A fight with Aaron Simpson awaits Mayhem’s return to the Octagon. Mayhem in last bout in the UFC, was a loss to current UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre.

Since that fight, Mayhem has gone on to build his brand and become one of those fighters that you either love, or you really hate.

Mayhem is one of the most in-your-face, whacked out, crazy fighters you’ll get. But for his first bout in the UFC, he won’t mince words with Simpson.

Its his first return to the UFC and only his second bout since last April’s, Strikeforce: Nashville.

Ring rust could play a role in his bout with Simpson. Mayhem last saw action against Kazushi Sakuraba and won by submission early in the first round at Dream. 16.

This battle between Simpson and Mayhem will be a great display of ground work. Simpson with his wrestling and Mayhem with his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

It will entertaining to see how Mayhem is able to work with Simpson and see if he can win against this wrestler.

With a win here, Mayhem will be able to shoot up the rankings a little bit further. If he can get out of this bout unscathed, and completely healthy, there is a slight chance he could take over for The Ultimate Fighter coaching duties. Shooting begins this summer and could be a quick bump in the ratings.

Mayhem should bring fireworks in his return to the UFC. Mayhem is an excellent fighter and his walkouts and fighting style are exciting to watch.
