American Kickboxing Academy coach Javier Mendez clarified details surrounding Khabib Nurmagomedov’s retirement from coaching, suggesting that ‘The Eagle’ never actually said he was walking away from the sport altogether.

After going 29-0, capturing the UFC lightweight world championship along the way, Nurmagomedov retired from the sport in 2020 following a title defense against perennial contender Justin Gaethje. Since then, ‘The Eagle’ has continued to be a constant presence at events while cornering fighters, including reigning 155-pound titleholder Islam Makhachev. However, fans were thrown another curveball when Nurmagomedov seemingly announced his retirement from coaching and was noticeably absent during Makhachev’s UFC 284 superfight with featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski.

As it turns out, Nurmagomedov may not actually be done coaching. Sure, the likelihood of seeing him Octagon-side on Fight Night is slim, but according to Javier Mendez, ‘The Eagle’ still makes an appearance inside the gym from time to time.

“One thing people don’t understand is he never said he wouldn’t coach people,” Mendez told The Schmo. “He said he’s not gonna be in the corner and travel to fight camps because he’s spending time with his family. He never said he wouldn’t come and visit here and there, and train the guys. He never said none of that. He’s still holding to everything he’s ever said (h/t MMA News).

Javier Mendez also confirmed that ‘The Eagle’ has been back in the gym, helping his cousin Abubakar Nurmagomedov prepare for a UFC Fight Night clash with Elizeu Zaleski on June 3. With both Islam Makhachev and Umar Nurmagomedov expected to return later this year, Mendez is hoping that the UFC Hall of Famer will make his way back to the gym and take some of the load off his shoulders.

“He never said never either, so I’m hoping at some point he can come back and help me because him being in the corner is such a huge motivator for the guys and me,” Mendez explained. “Then my job’s easier. I don’t have to worry about hardly anything. I just sit in the backseat and let him drive because he’s a hell of a driver.”

Javier Mendez Believes He Has Another Future World Champon on His Hands with Umar Nurmagomedov

Javier Mendez could be very busy in the near future as he has yet another potential future world champion on his hands with Umar Nurmagomedov. The 16-0 standout is on the cusp of becoming a legitimate contender in the bantamweight division. Speaking on the trajectory ‘Young Eagle’ is on, Mendez suggested it’s just a matter of time before he is facing top-five opponents en route to becoming a UFC world champion.

“Soon to be (champion), we’ve got ‘Young Eagle,’ which is Umar, Khabib’s cousin… He’s gonna be the bantamweight champ,” Mendez said. “Anybody in the top five is the right opponent (for him)… The likelihood of beating him is not in their favor. I don’t see anybody beating him in the bantamweight division.

“We’re training for a fight, we’re just waiting for a fight date… ‘Young Eagle’ Umar will be champ beginning of next year. New UFC bantamweight champion, I’m predicting it,” Mendez continued. “We get a top-five guy in his next fight, and I know he’s gonna beat him. Then the title shot is next. I really believe in my heart that the UFC will do that.”

Former undisputed UFC lightweight and featherweight champion, Conor McGregor unleashed an expletive-filled tirade on his official Twitter account overnight – taking aim at five prominent mixed martial arts head coaches, and claiming himself and his head coach, John Kavanagh of Straight Blast Gym, had created a system to defeat the likes of past-foe, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion, is expected to return to welterweight waters in his UFC comeback later this year.

Finishing filming on The Ultimate Fighter 31 earlier this month, McGregor featured as an opposing head coach on the reality television show against the #5 ranked challenger, Michael Chandler – with the duo expected to fight later this year under the UFC banner.

Conor McGregor provides update on training camp location

Providing an update on his return to camp, McGregor claimed he and his team would be setting up shop in Big Bear, California.

Sharing a slew of tweets last night from his official Twitter account, McGregor took aim at the likes of Trevor Wittman, Javier Mendez, and Firas Zahabi, as well as once more pointing to the above-mentioned, Nurmagomedov’s retirement during a back-and-forth with the Russian’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz.

“Firaz Zihabi (sic) is a little douchebag,” Conor McGregor tweeted. “Trevor Wittman is a pad man. Javier Mendez is a fat a*se lick kick boxer. Mike Brown is a smelly pr*ck. Greg Jackson got caught up, the system of coach [John] Kavanagh is now shining thru (sic). In years to come, the world will know what we have been at. It’s beginning to bare fruit. If you want to train, train at SBG Ireland with Kav, and me. We are a fight factory akin to butter churning.”

“Hey, sh*t stain on the game,” Conor McGregor replied to Ali Abdelaziz. “I’m talking as of now it is beginning to bare fruit. We bat their system of fighting on TUF. It’s locked down. It’s no wonder sh*t pants {Khabib Nurmagomedov} scurried. There’s no competing now. The head of the style is too fat a b*tch and afraid to compete again. So we win. You can’t compete with us. Watching and witness, you rat b*stard.”

Sidelined since July 2021, McGregor most recently headlined UFC 264 against Dustin Poirier, fracturing his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO defeat.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Coach

American Kickboxing Academy head coach, Javier Mendez has confirmed former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov is set to walk away from his coaching role in mixed martial arts, in order to spend time with his family.

Khabib, a former undisputed lightweight champion under the banner of the UFC, retired from active competition back in 2020 having improved to 29-0 professionally courtesy of a second round triangle win over Justin Gaethje to unify the lightweight championships.

In the time since, Khabib has turned his hand to coaching – guiding both Islam Makhachev, and Usman Nurmagomedov to undisputed lightweight gold under the banners of the UFC and Bellator MMA in the last year.

However, recently, speculation has rose regarding the coaching future of Khabib, with Russian manager and Eagle FC CEO, Rizvan Magomedov confirming his doubts that the Dagestan native would corner Makhachev at UFC 284 on February 11.

“I think he (Khabib Nurmagomedov) made it clear and it was such a balanced decision that he approached for a long time,” Rizvan Magomedov said during an interview with Russian outlet, Match TV. “There is no need to look for any behind-the-scenes reasons or radical incidents there. He just came to this. He ended his career in 2020, but travels during training camps, during fights. Out of 12 months, he is 10 absent from home, constantly on these trips.”

“And he (Khabib Nurmagomedov) came to such a decision that it was time to spend time with his family, [and] devote time to children. And, most likely, he will miss this fight (Islam Makhachaev vs. Alexander Volkanovski), yes.”

Javier Mendez addresses Khabib Nurmagomedov’s future as a coach in MMA

Following Magomedov’s revelation of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s uncertain future in the sport entirely, AKA head coach, Mendez has confirmed his long-time student is set to take a step away from the coaching setup.

“Yes, he (Khabib Nurmagoemdov) told me, unlike the last time when he promised his mother that he would retire from competition and I was not aware of it, this one here, he informed me about three weeks out that this is what he was gonna do,” Javier Mendez told Submission Radio. “He wants to spend time with his family, and I one hundred per cent I’m with him on what he wants to do and the reasons why he wants to do it.”

“There’s no legit reasons more than family for him and giving them what they deserve, the time, you know, while they’re young,” Mendez explained. “And he never said forever, but there’s gonna be a while though I would imagine. Unles something happens where he really misses that and he really feels he’s needed. But right now, I think everybody is good with his decision and very happy for him.”

Islam Makhachev Alexander Volkanovski Javier Mendez

American Kickboxing Academy head coach, Javier Mendez has his reservations regarding student, Islam Makahchev’s ability to land a finish over featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 in February, however, still expects to him to topple the pound-for-pound king.

Islam Makhachev landed his lightweight title in an October win over Charles Oliveira

Islam Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion of the UFC, headlined UFC 280 back in October of last year in a vacant lightweight title fight against Charles Oliveira, submitting the Brazilian with a second round arm-triangle choke win.

In the immediate aftermath, the Dagestan grappler was booked to headline UFC 284 on February 11. at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia – in a champion versus champion clash with featherweight counterpart, Volkanovski.

Attempting to rack up consecutive victory number twelve in his title fight against Volkanovski, Islam Makahchev has been tipped to leave Australia with lightweight gold in tow by his coach, however, he expects a drawn-out clash.

“I expect at the end of the day Islam Makhachev is going to be pound-for-pound the best fighter in the UFC or in the world actually,” Javier Mendez told Helen Yee during a recent interview. “Pound-and-pound, after he beats Alex (Alexander Volkanovski) which I’m expecting him to do but not like people, are thinking, like any kind of finish I don’t like that. It’s gonna be a five round war.”

“In my opinion, there is no one in the lightweight division that’s going to beat Islam (Makhachev) outside of what anybody can, you know, anybody can win but on the decision, not one’s going to beat him.” (Transcribed by Middleeasy

In his most recent Octagon outing, Volkanovski managed to successfully defend his undisputed featherweight title in a unanimous decision trilogy title fight against Max Holloway back in July of this year.

Volkanovski will likely have to compete against either Yair Rodriguez or Josh Emmett in his next Octagon outing regardless of result against Islam Makhachev, as the latter duo compete for an interim title at UFC 284 to boot.
