Javier Mendez has expressed his praise for his young pupil Usman Nurmagomedov (16-0 MMA) following his performance at Bellator 288.

The American Kickboxing Academy coach believed Numagomedov carried out his game plan perfectly after claiming the Bellator Lightweight Championship away from Patricky Freire (24-11 MMA) in Chicago earlier this month.

The Russian native was able to display a variety of his skills across the five-round affair. After the allotted 25 minutes, Nurmagomedov earned himself a dominant decision victory, as he became the new undisputed 155lbs champion and kept his unbeaten status.

Despite the outcome of the fight being very one-sided, Javier Mendez expressed that it wasn’t as easy as it looked.

“He won easily, and it wasn’t an easy fight, but he made it look easy,” Mendez exclaimed.

“There were a few times when the fight wasn’t too exciting, but that’s because Patricky didn’t do anything. He didn’t do anything.”

“He had his guard up, but he didn’t exchange. So, there were boos from the fans, they always want fighters to collide, but they didn’t. Usman did, he was kicking and throwing strikes, but Patricky didn’t do anything because he couldn’t enter. Usman didn’t let him enter.”

Javier Mendez believes we are yet to see the best of Usman Nurmagomedov

Mendez said the fight played out exactly how they planned, although now a champion in one of MMA’s major promotions, he is sure the world hasn’t seen the best from his student.

Not only does he anticipate much improvement from the 24-year-old, but Javier Mendez also sees an even brighter future In the sport for Usman Nurmagomedov.

“We knew that it was going to play out like that,” Mendez stated.

“The thing that you have in against Patricky is the long attacks, the legs, the jabs. He’s taller. So we kept the distance and kicked and kicked to push him back, and whenever he closed the distance, he needed to go to the wrestling. So whenever he wanted to come in with strikes, he needed to wrestle, and that’s what he did.”

“He did everything perfectly. This kid is only 24 years old and has a lot to grow. In two or three years when he does his growing, man, watch out. He’s going to be one of the biggest stars in MMA. That’s what I believe.” (Transcribed by MMA Junnkie)

It is unsure whom the newly crowned Bellator Champion will defend his lightweight title against yet, however, one thing is for sure it’s not only Javier Mendez that predicts Usman Nurmagomedov will have a long future in this sport.

Javier Mendez, Conor McGregor

Coach Javier Mendez has reacted to Conor McGregor’s recent tweets claiming that he has the tools to defeat newly crowned UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.

In the aftermath of Makhachev’s title-winning performance against Charles Oliveira at UFC 280, Conor McGregor took to Twitter to boldly proclaim that he has the tools to defeat the new champ.

Speaking on Submission Radio, the head coach of AKA, Javier Mendez reacted to the ‘Notorious’ Irishman’s claims. He stated that:

“He has the tools to beat anybody, but will he? He’s been mentally incomplete there, he’s never been there. When was the last time he had a complete fight where he fought properly? He’s a huge name so whoever gets to fight him makes a huge payday. Obviously, everybody jumping at the bit to get a hold of him because he’s proven to be beatable. He’s not proven to be indestructible. He himself, he can hype up anything so let him hype it up. I don’t really care much for him anyways.”

Javier Mendez reacts to Conor McGregor’s comments on ‘Father’s Plan’

The success of both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev is largely credited to Khabib’s father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Tragically, Abdulmanap passed away before he could see Makhachev reach his true potential. However, this has not stopped Conor McGregor from continually mentioning him in his disparaging Tweets. Mendez had the following to say:

“I don’t think that’s cool. I really don’t. I just wish he would keep it clean. The guys a great fighter, he doesn’t need to do that, and then he would have my respect. If he did that. Anybody can change, so if he did change, I definitely can forgive and forget. But as long as your still doing what your doing then I’m not going to respect you and I’m not going to like you. Doesn’t mean I can’t change my mind. It’s just right now, I could care less about him.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov

American Kickboxing Academy coach Javier Mendez has high praise for his former student Khabib Nurmagomedov. ‘The Eagle’ has taken to coaching since retiring as an undefeated UFC world champion and has coached Islam Makhachev into a title match at UFC 280.

While speaking on the UFC Unfiltered Podcast, Mendez explained how he sees Nurmagomedov as a coach and trainer. He said:

“He’s been coaching forever. Even when he was fighting, he was coaching. He’d be sparring through these five rounds and all of a sudden he’d be sitting there with us coaching the guys. He’s been doing that forever.”

Mendez added the attitude Khabib Nurmagomedov has regarding educating training partners is passed down from his father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Abdulmanap was a coach of the national freestyle wrestling team for the Republic of Dagestan. The AKA coach continued:

“His father had trained him from such a young age to take the responsibility over, as a fighter, as a coach, and he’s taking over his father’s footsteps. He’s learned from me, he’s learned from his father, mostly his father. But to me, he’s on track, in my opinion, because of his age, what he’s doing, the camp I see, the fighters he has, he’s on track to being the greatest coach of all time, in my opinion. I see it. I see the writing on the wall.” [Transcript courtesy of BJPenn.com]

Khabib Nurmagomedov as a coach

Since retiring in October 2020, Khabib Nurmagomedov has dedicated more of his focus to being a cornerman and coach for his fellow students. The Dagestani fighter most notable has coached Islam Makhachev on his ten-fight unbeaten streak into a UFC title shot later this month.

The Russian fighter also has trained Abubakar Nurmagomedov who has had one victory since 2020 in the UFC. Plus, undefeated UFC fighter Umar Nurmagomedov has gone 3-0 in that time. Additionally, Usman Nurmagomedov went a perfect 4-0 in Bellator to maintain his unbeaten streak. Other fighters he has coached and cornered include Zubaira Tukhugov, Tagir Ulanbekov, Islam Mamedov, Gadzhi Rabadanov, and Saygid Izagakhmaev.

While he leaves an incredible legacy in MMA by retiring as an undefeated champion, according to Mendez he is still building his legacy as a mentor and a coach to his fellow Dagestani fighters.

Javier Mendez backs Jake Paul to make successful MMA move: ‘Getting him ready wouldn’t take too long’

Jake Paul

American Kickboxing Academy head coach, Javier Mendez has claimed that it would not necessarily take an absurd amount of time to bring undefeated professional boxer, Jake Paul to a competent level ahead of a planned transition to professional mixed martial arts.

Paul, boasting an undefeated 5-0 professional record, is slated to make his return to the squared circle at the end of this month in Phoenix, Arizona – drawing the veteran former undisputed UFC middleweight titleholder, Anderson Silva.

The Ohio native saw fights with both Tommy Fury and Hasim Rahman Jr. fall to the wayside earlier this summer, and has been sidelined since a knockout win over former UFC welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley in the pair’s rematch last December.

In the build-up to this month’s boxing return, Paul has claimed he had been in discussions with a mixed martial arts promotion to likely make his professional debut in the sport, teasing an eventual transition to the sport.

“I’m working with a big organization right now,” Jake Paul said. “A whole thing in MMA. It also has to do with me fighting and we’re gonna have an announcement soon.”

“Javier Mendez said he would train me,” Jake Paul explained. “So I’ll go to AKA (American Kickboxing Academy). I’ll probably need, like, a year, year and a half to get the kicks down. I already know Jiu-Jitsu… I want to be able to do everything in there. At least checking kicks. I know how to wrestle already.”

Javier Mendez endorses Jake Paul’s potential transition to mixed martial arts

Commenting on Paul’s potential move, the aforenoted, Mendez – former head coach of the unbeaten former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagoemdov, denied he would be solely training him at AKA, however, insisted the 25-year-old could be trained quite timely.

“Jacob Chavez is a very close friend of mine and he’s an AKA (American Kickboxing Academy) coach,” Javier Mendez told MMA Junkie during a recent interview. “He trained Blagoy Ivanov, that’s how I met him, and he’s with (training) Jake Paul. I don’t really know anything else other than he’s (Jake Paul) training with an AKA coach which is Jacob Chavez, that’s all.”

“If Jake Paul wanted to do MMA, I’m sure he can,” Javier Mendez explained. “He’s a wrestler an now he’s got boxing, and he’s a great athlete. So I think getting him ready wouldn’t take too long, but at the same time too, it depends on the level, you know, where you’re going to put him.”

While Mendez believes a potential transition for Paul could prove successful, he stressed the need to match the social media star correctly, fearing his chances against a proficient grappler or wrestling talent.

“You can’t put him in with someone that’s got great Jiu-Jitsu or great wrestling,” Mendez said. “They can take him down because he’s not going to be able to survive that. So, he’s going to need time.”

Javier Mendez stated that Islam Makhachev was the only person to ever beat Khabib Nurmagomedov in all their years of training.

Makhachev is slated to take on top contender Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title in the headlining bout of UFC 280 on Oct. 22 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He goes into the bout off a 10-fight win streak but has faced criticism for not having a top-five ranked competition on his record.

Javier Mendez says Islam Makhachev was the only person to win rounds against Khabib in training history

In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Javier Mendez of American Kickboxing Academy (AKA), the gym of former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, shared that ‘The Eagle’ never lost a sparring session in training since 2012. He heaped praises on Makhachev, who he says is the only person to ever win rounds over Khabib.

“In all the history, since 2012, since Khabib’s been doing sparring with me in front of my eyes, there has been nobody that’s ever taken a round from him. No one’s ever won a sparring session. Not a sparring session with Khabib ever. Except one man. Islam,” Mendez said (ht BJPenn.com). “He’s the only one that has won rounds from Khabib. Never won a session, but he’s won rounds. And I’ve never seen that. So, obviously, when Khabib talks about the next heir, he’s not saying something that he’s trying to make up and make people believe. He knows, like I know, how good his Islam is.

Mendez believes Makhachev is the best right now

Mendez is confident Makhachev will prove he is the best in the world against Oliveira.

“That’s why he’s so confident in what he’s saying. Khabib’s not known to say something that he doesn’t mean,” Mendez continued about Islam Makhachev. “And he means it, I mean it. And now it’s time for Islam to go out there and shine and let everybody know what Khabib already knows and I know, that he’s the best right now. He is the best. And we have to prove it and we will prove it.”
