LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC Vegas 24: Whittaker vs. Gastelum results throughout the afternoon (Sat. 10th. April 2021) from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Taking main event honours at the UFC Apex facility event, former middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker meets with the #8 ranked contender, Kelvin Gastelum in a short-notice, rescheduled headlining matchup.

Initially scheduled to headline UFC 234 back in February of 2019, then-middleweight titleholder, Whittaker was forced to remove himself from proceedings on the day of the event, requiring emergency surgery after he suffered a hernia and a twisted and collapsed bowel.

Riding a two-fight winning spree, Whittaker has taken a pair of unanimous decision successes against former welterweight title challenger, Darren Till in July last, and October UFC 254 judging win over Jared Cannonier.

Replacing most recent title challenger, Paulo Costa on a month’s notice, Gastelum enters the tie off the back of a unanimous decision success against Ian Heinisch at UFC 258 back in February — where he snapped his three-fight losing skid.

In the co-main event, renowned puncher, Jeremy Stephens returns to the lightweight limit for the first time since May of 2013, as he tackles Drakkar Klose.

Suffering his second consecutive defeat last May at UFC 249 in Jacksonville, Florida, Stephens dropped a second-round knockout defeat to Calvin Kattar.

Returning to the Octagon for the first time since UFC 248 last March, Klose seen his three-fight winning spree halted by Beneil Dariush, suffering a second-round knockout loss in a heated exchange.

2021 looks to be the year UFC Featherweight contender Jeremy Stephens makes his return to the Lightweight division with rumors pointing to a match against Drakkar Klose.

According to MMA Junkie, multiple sources confirmed that the match had been booked for the UFC’s April 17th card.

Drakkar Klose was initially set to face off against Luis Pena on February 20, however, the bout was canceled on the day of the event due to a positive COVID test. Outside of this booking, Klose has not competed since UFC 248 where he took on top Lightweight contender Beniel Dariush. This fight did not go Klose’s way ending a three-fight winning streak that he had put together.

Stephens’s last outing was at UFC 249 where he faced off against Clavin Kattar. Similarly, in this matchup, Stephens was defeated by TKO and has taken some time off since. Currently, Stephens is sitting on a four-fight losing streak and this change in division looks to be a move to gain a fresh start without the weight cut. In his bout with Kattar, Stephens missed weight on the scales and ultimately was forced to hand over a portion of his purse to compete.

The last time Stephens competed at Lightweight was against Yves Edwards in December of 2012. This loss was also part of a three-fight losing streak that included names such as Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis. Upon moving to Featherweight Stephens put together three wins in a row before losing his first fight in the division.

The April 17 card is set to be headlined by former UFC Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker taking on former title contender Paulo Costa. Outside of this matchup, the card also has five other fights believed to be confirmed for the event.

How do you see Stephens going in his return to the Lighweight divison?

EXCLUSIVE | Arnold Allen Bemused By Potential Stephens-Chikadze Fight

Top featherweight contender Arnold Allen is confused about a potential match-up between Jeremy Stephens, who was supposed to fight him at UFC Vegas 13, and unranked Georgian kickboxer, Giga Chikadze.

Allen has amassed seven straight wins since joining the UFC back in 2015. This past weekend he was supposed to be in the biggest fight of his career opposite ‘Lil Heathen’ but the long-time 145lb fighter withdrew from the bout citing injury.

Chikadze picked up his fifth straight UFC win on the card against late-replacement opponent Jamey Simmons. Post-fight he accused Allen of ducking a fight with him. The 26-year-old Englishman told LowKickMMA that a fight with Chikadze was on the table but he decided against it due to a number of reasons.

“That Giga (Chikadze) guy, he was offered, and he fought still on the card,” Allen said. “It was just like, the complete opposite of what we had prepared for and last minute.”

“That was the only option. Obviously, he’s good. I rate him. It’s not an easy match-up by any means but at this point, we need ranked opponents, like top ten, we need big names. We was supposed to fight (Josh) Emmett. We was supposed to fight Stephens and they both got injured.”

Allen claims he is not against short-notice fights and would be willing to step up if needed against the right opponent.

“For the right opportunity I’m ready to step in. Zabit (Magomedsharipov) a few weeks ago, before I was booked to fight Stephens. Yair (Rodriguez) pulled out and I offer to step in. I said, ‘I’ll take it’ (and) he said he was waiting for a title shot or was rallying for a title shot – obviously that didn’t happen. For opportunities like that, for top guys… I’ll step in for that. I’m ready to go but I’m not just here to take random fights. I’m in a good position. I’m still young as well.”

Chikadze later asked for a fight against Stephens for December. The supposedly injured knockout artist took to social media to verbally agree to the fight – a move that doesn’t sit right with Allen, who told us.

“To be honest it makes me feel like Stephens is ducking me, I don’t know. People were saying it when he first pulled out. ‘Ahh, he’s scared to fight you’. Nah, I look at his record and he’s fought everyone, I don’t think he’s scared to fight anyone. But, it does make you think why would he say that? Surely, he would be like ‘ahh ok, but we are getting the fight back on with Arnold’.

Allen says he is up for rescheduling his fight with Stephens for December but insists that was not an option given to him when his UFC Vegas 13 opponent originally pulled out of their scheduled bout.

“If he’s injured for a few weeks and we have to wait, I’ll wait for Stephens,” Allen said. “I’m happy to do that. I was told he’s out for a long while (and) he’s going to be out until next year.”
