Jiri Prochazka, who was the reigning RIZIN light heavyweight champion, signed with the UFC recently. Many were surprised about that given Bellator was talking about Ryan Bader vs. Prochazka.

For the Czech fighter, he said Bellator did offer him a contract but the UFC has always been his dream.

“Yes, we talked to Bellator about the Ryan Bader fight but the UFC was always a bigger target of mine, so we signed with them instead,” revealed Prochazka to BloodyElbow. “The UFC approached me after my fight against Dollaway and the talks were completed very quickly. They made us a really good offer so we took it right away. Since I began my MMA career eight years ago, being in the UFC was always my dream.”

In RIZIN, Prochazka became a star and made massive strides in his career.

“I really enjoyed competing for Rizin, because I like the idea of the samurai and the Bushido spirit,” Prochazka explained. “They also enjoyed having me because I had good fights with lots of action. I love Japan as a country and Rizin helped prepare me for taking on the best in the world. So now is the time to win it all.

“I’ve changed so much since my first fights in Rizin and I am a totally different fighter now,” he continued. “After every fight, I grew and improved in some way. I’m still trying to be better every day, and my aim is to be the absolute best. I train with this goal in mind all of the time.”

When he will make his Octagon debut is unknown at this time. But, he says ht is adding some much-needed new blood into the UFC’s light heavyweight division.

“I think the light heavyweight division in the UFC needs new and fresh guys who can look to challenge the top five,” stated Prochazka. “At this point in my career, I don’t want to hang around and build myself up; I want to jump into the top ten right away. When I know who my opponent will be, I’ll be ready. My next goal is to win my first fight in the UFC with one of my best performances ever. I want to show the world what I am capable of.”

RIZIN light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka is heading to the UFC.

ESPN reports that Prochazka, who signed with RIZIN back in 2015, is now part of the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) organization. Prochazka was a finalist in the 2015 RIZIN World Championship Grand Prix, defeating Vadim Nemkov and Satoshi Ishii, before being bested by “King Mo” Muhammed Lawal via first-round knockout.

Since that defeat, Prochazka has been on a 10-fight win streak, which includes wins over notable names such as C.B. Dollaway, Fabio Maldonado, and Brandon Halsey. He avenged his knockout loss to Lawal back in April at RIZIN 15 when he finished “King Mo” via third-round knockout. His amazing win streak caught the attention of Bellator heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Ryan Bader, who called Prochazka out recently.

However, that fight is now off the table, as Prochazka will now compete for the UFC, who isn’t too keen on crossover fights. No opponent or date has been named for Prochazka’s UFC debut, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

Bellator two-weight champion Ryan Bader was certainly impressed by Jiri Prochazka’s performance on New Year’s Eve.

Prochazka defended his light heavyweight title following a first-round knockout of UFC veteran C.B. Dollaway at RIZIN 20 in Saitama, Japan. It puts the Czech star on a 10-fight winning streak with his last loss coming in 2015.

And Bader decided to call him out soon after.

“Congrats #jiriprochazka . we couldn’t make it happen in @rizin_PR so let’s do this in the @BellatorMMA cage. LHW title on the line,” Bader tweeted.

There was talk of a cross-promotional fight between Bader and Prochazka earlier this year only for it not to come to fruition. But given Bellator and RIZIN’s continued partnership in recent times, it’s entirely possible that it could happen in 2020.

Bader is undefeated in his last eight but hasn’t defended his light heavyweight title since November 2017. However, Bellator president Scott Coker expects him to defend both his titles in 2020 as well as compete four times.

Maybe a super fight with Prochazka could be one of those fights.
