As middleweight prospect Louis Taylor heads towards his fight against veteran Joe Riggs at Friday’s Strikeforce Challengers 10 in Phoenix, Ariz., he can look back at his Strikeforce debut setback last year as a positive learning experience.

After all, in under a year, he’s gone from losing on a Strikeforce undercard bout to headlining a Strikeforce event on Showtime. Additionally, if he beats his name opponent, the local Chicago fighter could put himself on the map nationally.

“[Riggs is] definitely the most complete fighter I’ve faced and I’m a big fan of his, and he’s paid his dues,” Taylor tells MMAFighting.com. “Right now, basically he’s in my way, so it’s up to me to get him out of my way and keep it moving. I’m looking at him as an opportunity I need. It’s a big step up so it’s up to me to prove I belong in his category or above.”

Joe Riggs on tomorrow night’s Strikeforce women’s tournament, as quoted in a Strikeforce press release sent out last night: “It’s great. They are always exciting. I saw Miesha (Tate) fight up in Minnesota when I was up there fighting last year and she’s very exciting…That tournament style is hard. I’ve done it and it’s no picnic. You come out with just an hour’s rest a little banged up and you feel injuries you didn’t even know you had during the fight. My hat’s off to them."

Joe Riggs on women’s MMA, as quoted in an SB Nation interview published yesterday: "I don’t know what that girl [Sarah Kaufman] is talking about. She’s lucky to even be on TV…As long as they don’t say things like they don’t want to be on the Challengers card and they want to be main events than they’re good. We’re the show. The men are what people are here to see."

Although most casual MMA fans probably won’t be ‘shifting a few things around’ to make sure they catch this Friday’s Strikeforce Challengers card, long time observers might be interested in seeing how UFC vet Joe Riggs fares against Louis Taylor in the main event. Training partners of Riggs have consistently stated that the guy is a terrifying beast, and we’ve seen some of that like in his wins over Phil Baroni and Nick Diaz, but in other tilts he hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype (cue footage of loss to Diego Sanchez).

Riggs had been making some waves again, courtesy a 4 fight winning streak he was on, but in January he lost by UD to Xtreme Couture’s Jay Hieron. The fighter recently appeared on Sherdog’s “Beatdown” radio program, to discuss this Friday’s 182lb. catch-weight bout with Taylor, and it doesn’t sound like Riggs is too thrilled about going half a year plus without fighting.

“I’ve been training hard, but Strikeforce just didn’t give me a fight,” said Riggs. “I’ve been training, been on ‘Bully Beatdown’ on MTV and stuff like that, but I haven’t been able to fight. Strikeforce has been talking about this card in Phoenix for like five months and kept talking about it and I didn’t know it was going to be here for sure until like a month ago. I’ve been trying to fight, but they didn’t give me a fight.”

Dude wants to fight! Riggs also shared some of his less than kind thoughts on Strikeforce 135lb. women’s champion Sarah Kaufman; curious as to why? Head here.
