UFC color commentator Joe Rogan explains a lot of things on his top-rated “JRE” podcast. He most recently talked about his workload on his latest fight companion.

The UFC and ESPN partnership could not have gotten off to a better start. The first several events in this “new era” of UFC programming have been home runs. For example, last weekend’s UFC Phoenix hit numbers that have not been seen since 2016.

Rogan, however, has been noticeably absent from ESPN broadcasts as he was in the previous run with FOX.

“I’m not interested,” said Joe during a recent edition of his “Fight Companion” podcast.

“I would take this for zero money over being in Phoenix right now. Although I would like to see those fights live and call those fights live, I’m good with 10 a year,” he added. “10 a year is what I like. Once a month, two months off.”

Although Rogan has been with the UFC for over 20 years, he went on to explain how he seriously considered walking away. But in the end, decided scaling back was the move.

“Listen, man, I was thinking I was on my way out, but I still love it. And I love it way more now because I don’t have to do it as much. And I love it way more now because we do this because we can do all of this shit-talking, have fun and be silly.”

In his absence, the UFC has promoted Michael Bisping from the analyst desk to work color alongside mainstays Jon Anik, Daniel Cormier, and Dominick Cruz.

After taking a shot at MMA during her awards speech, Meryl Streep has caught a ton of flack…

Mixed martial arts is still not fully accepted. After years of battling to get the sport legalized in New York, the final state that refused to regulate MMA finally caved last year. Even so, drastic and outlandish statements about child labour and porn were used by opposing senators to condemn the sport. It seems narrow-minded politicians aren’t the only ones with a bee in their bonnet about MMA, Meryl Streep is also on that bandwagon.

During her Golden Globes award acceptance speech this past weekend, the Hollywood actress took a dig at MMA. Claiming it ‘wasn’t an art,’ Streep’s comments led to a stream of furious reactions from the combat sports world. UFC president Dana White blasted Streep as an ‘uppity 80-year old,’ whereas Scott Coker invited her to watch a Bellator show. Now it’s Joe Rogan’s turn.

Joe Rogan’s Response

Responding to Streep’s comments, Joe Rogan told Bas Rutten and Mauro Ranello about the artistic aspect of MMA:

“It was pompous. I was reading some of the responses to Meryl Streep, I was like ‘Jesus Christ!’ She went after mixed martial arts, because she used the word ‘arts’ and then she riffed it. What are arts? It’s not the art of pretending, it’s the art of executing under very difficult circumstances. Very difficult, you got somebody trying to smash bones in your face. It’s very difficult to do, and when its done properly its artistic.”

“You can’t tell me that when Anderson Silva landed that front kick on Vitor Belfort’s face and his legs give in, that’s not art. That’s art. (Ryo Chonan landing the flying scissor heel hook on Anderson Silva) that’s art, that was like a movie scene. A brutal piece of art was Quinton Rampage Jackson’s slam on Ricardo Arona. Oh my God, why did Arona hold on to that triangle? The impact was so brutal, Arona was essentially never the same again.”

UFC Fight Night 88 went down in Las Vegas, Nevada last night (Sunday May 29, 2016) with a highly underrated line up of promising prospects. The headline bout featured two fighters that represent the future of the 135-pound division, as Thomas Almeida looked to keep his 21-fight unbeaten streak going against 8-0 Cody Garbrandt. Turns out it was ‘No Love’ who would keep his unblemished record, and he did it in very brutal fashion.

The fight itself didn’t even make it out of the first round, as Garbrandt just proved to be way too much for Almeida. As many of us had thought, it was more about the footwork and defense, or lack thereof in the case of ‘Terminator’ that would prove crucial in this scrap.

The destructive force of Almeida’s striking was met with superior defensive skills, and much better footwork and timing from the Team Alpha Male prospect Garbrandt. In case you didn’t catch it last night, here’s the savage finish from the UFC on FOX Facebook page:

So it was a swift and dominant performance from Garbrandt, who improves to 9-0, but what was missing from the event? Yep, you guessed it, commentary from Joe Rogan.

Fortunately Rogan was watching live with Brendan Schaub and Bryan Callen and their reaction’s were caught on a live stream broadcast.

Can of worms, meet Joe Rogan…

UFC color commentator Joe Rogan is one of the most knowledgeable and well versed characters in all combat sports. His time calling fights for the promotion has seen Rogan go from a fresh faced stand up comic who worked for the UFC, to a more recognizable face than many fighters. During his podcasts aptly titled ‘The Joe Rogan Experience,’ we get to not only here some very interesting opinions on UFC and mixed martial arts, but also current events.

One thing that makes Rogan’s take on the fight game so unique is that he has so much more access than anyone else in the media. He’s been there for some truly crazy moments in MMA history, and often tells some seriously entertaining tales about his experiences. Many subjects were on the table for Rogan’s mst recent podcast, including Stipe Miocic’s KO win over Fabricio Werdum, the time Randy Couture beat up Brendan Schaub, and then the slightly more controversial issues of TRT, Fallon Fox, the transgender MMA fighter, and more. We’ve got the transcripts for you, followed by the full podcast episode, enjoy!

After the madness of UFC 198 this past weekend, Joe Rogan firstly discusses why he thinks Fabricio Werdum got knocked out by Stipe Miocic:

“He didn’t fight smart, he got tagged. If you watch the stoppage he got tagged right before he rushed in. He got tagged,he moved forward making his advances, he got tagged with the right hand, then he ran in and he was already on queer street and he got knocked the f*ck out. The way Stipe did it was a work of art, it was like Anderson Silva against Forrest Griffin. It was better, he got cracked, that’s how Aldo got knocked out against McGregor, it makes the punch harder when the guy charges in. Stipe has big power, but he fights technically and economically. He does things very correctly.”

It certainly was a masterful performance by Miocic, but the subject then turned to transgender fighter Fallon Fox, a topic that was hotly debated when it first arose years back. Rogan makes some very interesting statements, bringing known PED user Gabi Garcia in to the discussion.

The debate about gloves in the UFC has been going on a while now, but not so much whether or not they should be worn, rather if they could be improved to prevent fouls. The problem with the current style of glove is that the finger tips are free to do damage when the hand is open. This often results in eye pokes or scratches that not only cause breaks in the action, but are highly dangerous to the fighter’s health and safety. Vision problems can easily cost a fighter their career, and so thinking on a method of improving these gloves has been a constant effort, although to no avail as of yet.

Another and rather obvious safety feature in relation to gloves is not only for the person receiving the blow, but the one dishing out the punches. For the fighter who is throwing strikes, broken bones in the hand are a frequent hazard. But for Joe Rogan, it’s an unrealistic amount of protection for a fighter to have.

JoeRogan600x400

Making the oft referenced comparison between MMA and boxing during his most recent podcast, and also highlighting recent events, Rogan gives his opinion on fighter safety and more specifically whether MMA fighters should wear gloves or not:

“It’s much more rare that boxers break their hands compared to MMA fighters. I think MMA fighters have an unrealistic amount of protection on their hands, and it’s just for their own protection really. I got interviewed recently when that guy did overseas, and was asked if I thought MMA fighters should have bigger gloves or head gear. I think the real answer is no gloves and no wrist taping. The thing is when you punch you have to try really hard to keep your wrist straight, and you have to hit with the first two knuckles. Reckless punching would go away.”
