Stephe A. Smith struck a nerve with the mixed martial arts (MMA) community with his comments about Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on the UFC 246 post-fight show last week.
Cerrone had just lost to Conor McGregor in 40 seconds of their pay-per-view (PPV) main event. After the fight, Smith expressed how “disgusted” he was with Cerrone’s performance, before proceeding to bash the longtime UFC veteran. Alongside him during those comments was longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan. Rogan mentioned on the broadcast that he disagreed with Smith, but didn’t go into too much detail.
That all changed during a recent episode of Rogan’s podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience,” alongside Josh Thomson. Rogan suggested that, had he done the broadcast like someone such as Daniel Cormier, it would’ve been better for the sport. (H/T MMA Junkie)
“(Daniel Cormier) and I would’ve had a completely different conversation and it would’ve been better for the sport,” Rogan said. “There’s no positive in downplaying the career of Donald Cerrone and what he can do as a fighter. What that showed to me is how phenomenal Conor performed. That’s what it showed to me.
“If either you or I was talking about cricket, and we were on TV doing commentary on cricket, we would look out of place. It would be (expletive) up and real cricket fans would be upset at us. That’s nothing. You are naked in the most literal sense of the word (in MMA). Physically, you are naked. Emotionally, when fighters lose, it’s (expletive) devastating.
“For Conor to smash ‘Cowboy’ like that in front of his wife, his kid, his grandma and the whole world. You’ve got to have some respect for that man, and this sport demands a different perspective. It’s not the same thing as a ball going into a hoop. It’s not the same thing as crossing a line with a football. It’s different. It’s very intense and very personal, and it’s also very (expletive) dangerous and to play it off like it’s just a game, I don’t agree with it.”
Rogan understands that Smith is a household name in sports broadcasting and why ESPN added him to the program. However, the longtime UFC commentator simply believes his comments are a bad look on the sport.
“That’s a bad look for everybody,” Rogan said. “It’s a bad look for ESPN, it’s a bad look for him, it’s a bad look for the sport. There’s other people that can do this. … We have plenty of people out there who understand the sport. There’s plenty of them. But the thing about him is he’s really popular.
“(He just got a contract extension) because his personality is so fun. He’s a fun guy to watch and people love (expletive)-talking and they love people arguing about (expletive) and one person is better at arguing. Stephen A. Smith is really good at that stuff. But it’s not the place for MMA. It’s just not the place. It’s not the same thing.”

UFC commentator Joe Rogan heaped praise on Conor McGregor’s tribute to El Chapo.
McGregor is no stranger to making a fashion statement and back in 2016 when he was slated to face Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title, he notably donned El Chapo-themed attire.
The topic came up in a recent episode of Joe Rogan’s podcast as he praised the Irishman for pulling it off as well as attempting to recreate a handshake that the Mexican drug lord posed with.
“Did you ever see when Conor McGregor bought that same shirt and was taking pictures and doing that same pose?” Rogan asked his guests (via BJ Penn). “Conor was doing that same pose and not telling anyone. Everybody had to figure out what Conor was doing.”
When the picture was brought up, Rogan added more:
“Look at his face!” Rogan said. “He’s just a f*cking animal. God damn, I love that guy. Come on man. Pretty f*cking close. It’s just the handshake thing. Conor is normally putting his fists in peoples’ faces and talking sh*t and in that one he looks like he’s going to shake hands. Look at that, it’s like the same thing. He’s holding his hand out and Dos Anjos isn’t even thinking about holding his hand.
“And look at Dana White. Dana’s going ‘I’m going to make so much money. Oh my God, I’m going to make so much money from this fight.’”
In the end, Dos Anjos had to pull out with a foot injury which led to McGregor facing Nate Diaz on short notice which caused a huge butterfly effect in the world of mixed martial arts.

UFC commentator Joe Rogan believes Tony Ferguson is the best opponent Khabib Nurmagomedov will ever face.
Nurmagomedov is set to defend his lightweight title against Ferguson in the UFC 249 headliner on April 18 in Brooklyn, New York. It will be the fifth attempt at making the fight happen but there’s a general optimism that it will finally take place this year.
And Rogan is particularly excited by the stylistic matchup:
“It’s a great fight,” Rogan told Max Holloway on his podcast earlier this week (via BJ Penn). “I love the fight. Stylistically, [Ferguson is] the best guy that Khabib has ever faced because he can fight off his back. He’s a guy that doesn’t survive off his back, he attacks off his back.”
Holloway — who was initially set to face Ferguson for the interim lightweight title earlier this year — agreed and touched on how “El Cucuy” is a hard fighter to train for:
“This guy [Ferguson], he throws a lot of weird things from weird places,” Holloway said. “It’s hard. People don’t understand it. It’s very hard when you fight someone weird and awkward — even sparring him.
“You try to get something and then bang, he hits you with an elbow, but his head is by the ground. It’s like ‘what are you doing, Tony? How did I get [hit] with an elbow? I thought your head was over here.’”
Rogan went on to add how Ferguson is probably the most high-caliber unorthodox fighter there is in the sport of mixed martial arts today:
“He’s the most unorthodox high-level guy ever,” Rogan added. “He’s real good. At his level — I consider him a world championship caliber fighter — at his level, I don’t know of anybody that’s more unorthodox than him.
“And his f**king cardio, man… his cardio is crazy. Off the charts. I’ve never seen anybody with cardio like that.”
