Jon “Bones” Jones defeated Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at 2:37 in the third round of their UFC 128 title tilt and took the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion belt. Jones showed amazing ease in the fight that made Rua look rocked and gassing in the first round. Jones’ next opponent is teammate Rashad Evans, but if Evans hasn’t already figured out how to beat Jones, who he’s trained with day in and out, then it looks like Jones will be sitting atop the Light Heavyweight throne for a long-time coming.

To most, the Main Card went exactly as expected with Urijah Faber taking a Unanimous Decision win over Eddie Wineland who showed a strong first round but was no match for Faber’s vast improving stand-up skills displayed in the second and third rounds with a takedown in the final minute.  The win earned Faber a title-shot against UFC Bantamweight Champ, Dominick Cruz. Jim Miller proved Kamal Shalorus needs a lot more weaponry in his arsenal than his wrestling to compete with the UFC big boys. Nate Marquardt unsurprisingly dominated his late replacement match up, Dan Miller, and Brendan Schaub knocked out Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic late in the third round. Both fighters lost points for illegal blows in the second round but Cro Cop finished the round strong with his boxing. However, he was no match for Schaub in the third round and took the loss in what may be his final UFC bout.

Even Dana White says “the fact that [Maurico “Shogun” Rua] is the underdog is crazy!” But the online sportsbooks have made Shogun the dog by as much as +165. The current UFC Light Heavyweight Champ feels disrespected and rightfully so. Jon “Bones” Jones has proved himself to be a phenomenal athlete and worthy opponent but this is his first crack at a Top 5 fighter in the UFC and this particular Top 5 fighter is actually number 1! Rua established himself as the Light Heavyweight Champion by soundly handing Lyoto Machida his first professional loss with a knockout in the first round of UFC 113.

Shogun is a former Pride Champion, a current UFC Champion and only 6 years older than his 23 year old opponent. Shogun can beat Jon Jones by taking his legs out in similar fashion we saw him batter Machida’s legs. He also has proved several times in his career that he has knockout powerful punches. All eyes are on Jones this Saturday night. But this is also Jon Jones’ fight to lose. In a fight that should be at least EVEN in the books, take advantage of the Rua value.

Jon Jones Talks Strategy, Fighting “Shogun” From the Clinch

Anyone in their right mind should have been stoked to see Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Rashad Evans, but it seems like ever since Jon Jones came into the equation, the hype’s gone up another level. Anyone in their right mind should have been stoked to see Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Rashad Evans, but it seems like ever since Jon Jones came into the equation, the hype’s gone up another level. It makes sense of course, as just like thousands of others, we too quickly jumped on the “Bones” bandwagon after seeing what kind of glorious violence he’s capable of.

Despite the fact that this Saturday’s bout marks the first time the 23 year-old phenomenon will fight for the title, Jones has been taking it in stride, while remaining extremely confident about his chances. So, just how is the rising light-heavy planning on dismantling the champ? Speaking to ESPN, (thanks to MMA Fighting for the quote) Jones stated:

“I was a Greco-Roman All-American, and the clinch is such a huge part of combat sport,” Jones said. “If you look at Muay Thai matches, if you look at your traditional boxing, the clinch is huge. It’s a natural instinct for people to clinch when they’re in a bad situation. And that’s one of my main strengths. My takedowns from the clinch are very powerful, my knees from the clinch are very powerful, and I think that can be a huge mismatch that I can exploit in this fight.”

Yes, right about now you might recall Jones tossing opponents through the air like they were unsuspecting beach balls, and there’s little question he could do some serious damage from that position. That said, we are talking about Shogun, a man who reduced “Rampage” Jackson to a pile of broken human with some serious, serious knees. Guess we’ll see huh?

Rashad Evans Says Jon Jones “Insecure”

Cue Van Halen’s “Where Have all the Good Times Gone?”

For a few weeks now it’s been looking like training partners Jon Jones and Rashad Evans have finally been warming to the idea that they might have to fight, provided “Bones” takes the light-heavyweight strap from “Shogun” Rua this weekend. It’s been a stark reversal from the previous rhetoric streaming out of Greg Jackson camp that teammates wouldn’t throw down against each other, no matter what was on the line.

So, fans have been happy, Dana White has been damn happy, let’s wait and see what happens on Saturday right? Well, it looks as though things between Jones and Evans may be shifting from ‘it’s unfortunate but…’ to ‘he f—king said that?’ According to a report from Bloody Elbow, Evans didn’t apparently care so much for what Jones said about possibly fighting him on a recent media call. The quotes are taken from an interview Evans gave on Pro MMA Radio last night.

“It sounds like he wants to fight, huh? Those sound like fighting words. I don’t know how to judge the kid. It’s kind of messed up, to be honest. I can’t control what anyone else says and it sounds to me like he’s a little bit insecure about the whole thing. Sometimes when you open your mouth you show what you’re afraid of more than anything. I don’t know why he has such an adverse response like that to me. I’ve never challenged him or made him feel like he should do that sort of thing. It sounds to me — if I was out of the situation — that he was feeling insecure about me. … (It made Jon) sound like a baby”.

This is getting good no? To bet on Shogun vs. Bones head here.

Vladimir Matyushenko vs Jon Jones
Immediately after his hand was raised in the Octagon, this past Saturday night at UFC 126, Jon Jones was told he would be receiving the Light Heavyweight title-shot in just six weeks against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. The news brought Jones to his knees and he accepted the challenge with huge excitement and appreciation after hearing his Jackson’s Submission Fighting teammate, Rashad Evans had to pull out of the title-tilt due to a knee injury. Jones is not deterred from taking this fight, as he manhandled Ryan Bader through two rounds before choking him out with 40 seconds left in the second and seems to have barely endured a scratch, plus he says he’s already in fighting shape.  His only concern is to not over-train.

Within minutes of the fight announcement, tickets sales for the UFC 128 bout in New Jersey, (neighboring state to Jones’ home state of New York) were reportedly skyrocketing. And now the betting lines are showing Jones as the favorite by as much as -215.

It’s not that surprising seeing as Shogun hasn’t fought since last May. And though he took the title from Lyoto Machida with an impressive KO in the first round, it has been over 10 months since we’ve seen him inside the Octagon, which almost makes him out of sight, out of mind. Currently all hype is squarely on Jon Jones who appears to be the biggest rising star in the UFC.  However, with all the new attention this bout will be getting in the coming weeks leading up to the March 19th Main Event, we expect we’ll see a lot of movement on these lines, so if you think Rua’s experience can beat Jones’ youth then take advantage of his underdog value now which is as much as +175.
