Less than a year ago, No. 6-ranked light heavyweight competitor Ovince St. Preux was essentially dominated and finished by former title challenger Glover Teixeira in the main event of UFC Fight Night 73.

He has since bounce backed with a rather forgetful decision victory over Rafael Cavalcante at February’s UFC Fight Night 82.

Despite not necessarily making any major statements recently, OSP will now take on the reigning pound-for-pound king, and a man many consider to be the greatest fighter of all-time in Jon “Bones” Jones at April 23’s UFC 197 for the interim 205-pound strap.

St. Preux was given the opportunity of a lifetime after current divisional kingpin Daniel Cormier suffered an injury last week.

While many have already counted him out, St. Preux actually feels as if much of the pressure lies on Jones, who hasn’t competed in well over a year, in the upcoming bout.

In fact, the former collegiate football player feels as if he can hang with the division’s elite:

“(The interim-championship title) adds a little more pressure,” Saint Preux told MMA Junkie. “Not to me, but to him. In a situation like that, what do you have to lose?

“At times, I feel I do better on short notice,” Saint Preux said. “It’s going to get a little hectic in the next two, three weeks. But at least it wasn’t like that for the last three or four months, so I don’t have to do any adjustments at all. All the adjustment’s on (Jones). You look at me, and I’m a pretty good fighter. I can hold my own with the best of them.”

Despite currently standing a step below the division’s upper echelon, OSP is indeed a freak athlete, and a very powerful one at that.

With that being said, St. Preux even went as far as to say that he has the ability to put Jones away if an opportunity were to present itself:

“I might not put you away, but you’re going to feel it, and your knees are going to buckle. And if I hit you with a third one, it will put you away. That’s the happy medium I’ve been working on,” Saint Preux said. “Guys like that, you break them out of their pattern, and that’s what I intend to do. If I have the opportunity to finish him, I’m going to go ahead and take that opportunity. I guarantee you, he knows, as well as his camp knows, I can do that if the opportunity presents itself.

“He’s a beast, and I’m a beast, too. We both can do some beast (expletive).”

Are you giving OSP any chance against “Bones” in Las Vegas?

Jon Jones: DC Is An Absolute Coward Who Will Never Beat Me

After an injury forced UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel “DC” Cormier out of his highly anticipated rematch with the returning former king Jon “Bones” Jones at April 23’s UFC 197, it was recently announced that No. 6-ranked Ovince St. Preux would step up to meet Jones for the interim 205-pound strap.

Cormier, appearing on today’s (April 4, 2016) edition of the MMA Hour, discussed his injury, while offering St. Preux the chance to train, all expenses paid, at the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in the lead up to the bout.

Jones, who also appeared on the show, took this offer as a sign of weakness from Cormier, taking the chance to rip the champion in the process:

“Daniel is an absolute coward who will never beat me,” Jones said on The MMA Hour. “And I say that not from an arrogant place. I say that from a place where, me getting my belt back, it means everything to me. That belt right now is a big part of my life. It means everything to me. Me losing to OSP should be the last thing that [Cormier] would want, because if I were to somehow lose, that means he doesn’t get to avenge his only loss.”

Continuing on, “Bones” claimed that Cormier is ‘grateful’ to have pulled out of the fight, once again confirming that Cormier will never get the better of him inside of the Octagon:

“His inviting OSP to his training camp shows me that he’s so grateful that he’s not fighting me in three weeks,” Jones said. “That he’s so grateful that he gets to have one more family photo-op with that belt, because he knows that he’s not going to beat me, especially now with a knee injury. He’s going to be nursing his knee to get back to 100-percent. I’m going to just be getting stronger, better, faster, more rehearsed in my game plan to beat him.

“So, Daniel, man, he’s a mental midget. I’m not worried about Daniel. Obviously him inviting OSP shows that he’s so lucky he’ll be watching from the sidelines and not actually in that cage with me.”

In the end, the pound-for-pound king took to his official twitter account to take one more shot at his bitter rival, framing Cormier as a ‘pu**y’:

Following a week-long windfall of absolute frenzy surrounding Jon Jones’ latest vehicle-related offense, it looks like the oft-troubled former UFC champion has finally gotten himself the driver everyone believes he should have years ago.

After he was ticketed for five separate misdemeanor offenses including drag racing in Albuquerque, New Mexico two weeks ago, Jones was arrested for a probation violation of the 18-month term he was handed for the now-infamous hit-and-run charges that dealt a 25-year-old pregnant woman a broken arm in 2015. Jones was ordered to do 60 additional hours of community service and attend anger management and driving courses, yet the collective MMA world just didn’t seem to believe he would be able to stay out of trouble behind the wheel, and for good reason.

However, news has arrived today that his team has taken a big step to at least preventing that from happening before his short-notice interim title fight against Ovince St. Preux at UFC 197. According to Jones’ longtime head coach Greg Jackson on today’s edition of The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Jones finally now has a driver and has a singular focus on the fight game alone:

“He’s really focused. It was an unfortunate situation with everybody kind of being at fault a bit, but ultimately the responsibility is Jon’s. So  it was a bad situation, but he came out of there really focused, really positive. That’s the thing with Jon, as long as he’s razor focused, he’s a force to be reckoned with, and he’s really focused right now. It was not a very good thing, but he’s not physically injured, he doesn’t have anything wrong, he just, he made a mistake and maybe said things he shouldn’t have, yeah it was just a bad situation all-around. He got in trouble, refocused, and came out. That’s the part I like. He’s got a driver now, so everything should be fine.”

Jackson reiterated that Jones’ driver is a full-time one when questioned by Helwani, noting that he now needs to rise above the media circus his life has become and fixate his sights on becoming the champ once again:

“Oh yeah. Yeah, I just want him to focus on fighting. That’s what he needs to worry about. The rest of the circus, he needs to not be distracted by. He’s a warrior and he needs to focus on that.”

So Jones has finally hired the driver that could have presumably saved him so much money, bad publicity, and most importantly, legal trouble as he attempts to rebuild both his public persona and his fighting career.

Will it matter, or is ‘Bones’ simply too far gone down the path of a heel to return?

In the immediate aftermath of the disappointing news that Daniel Cormier would be forced out of his scheduled rematch with Jon Jones at UFC 197, “Bones” took to his twitter to voice a positive message for the champion and his most bitter rival.

It has since been announced that Jones will remain on the April 23 card, taking on late replacement and No. 6 ranked Ovince Saint Preux.

While “Bones” has made it clear that he appreciates Saint Preux stepping up on short notice, one would have to assume that he’s a bit let down at the circumstances.

The ex-champion was set to make his return to action, and attempt to secure the title he had never technically lost after dealing with a plethora of legal issues over the last year.

Jones and Cormier had also been in the midst of an intense buildup to a rematch a year and a half in the making.

With that being said, it wasn’t surprising to see Jones once again take to his twitter, this time sending a shot “DC’s” way:

A. Jones Tweet

Jones has since deleted the tweet.

Cormier was recently seen on a sneak peak of the UFC’s “Counterpunch” show, saying that he was willing to die in order to topple Jones.

In the end, “Bones” clearly feels as if that wasn’t true.

Thoughts?

With news arriving this morning that former UFC champion Jon Jones had been released from jail following a plea deal where he admitted to a plea deal and received anger management and driver management courses in addition to 60 hours extra community service, UFC president Dana White has finally spoken up on the subject.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, White described Jones’ mindset throughout his early days as a “nice guy” champion, saying that it just wasn’t him and we’re no getting the byproduct of that:

“I don’t think Jon Jones is ever going to be the Jon Jones that people expect him to be,” White said. “Jon is gonna do Jon. I think that Jon tried so hard to play the good guy for so long, it drove him crazy. And Jon is just gonna be Jon now.”

JonJonesOrangeSuit

Indeed Jon is gonna ‘do Jon,’ as his lengthy public arrest record over the past year would indicate. Jones was ticketed for five misdemeanor citations including drag racing in Albuquerque last week, offense not stringent enough to land in jail had he not already been on probation for hitting a 25-year-old pregnant woman last April and running the scene only to return to reportedly grab a stack of cash.

A prior violation of his probation was also overlooked in January when he was caught going 75 miles per hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone and failed to produce his driver’s license, registration, or insurance, but it was used as a warning when Jones agreed to more community service and to not get any further citations.

But obviously he did, and when he failed to inform his probation officer of the police contact, he was jailed in the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center for the past two days. That may have been at least in part due to the fact that he got into a war of words with the policeman where he called the officer a “f****** liar” and a “pig” (via TMZ):

And while Jones may have acted a bit rash by calling the traffic officer names, it also seemed that the policeman wasn’t nearly as professional as he could have been, something that will go on trial when Jones reportedly fights the traffic citations in court.

White, however, had one hilariously simple (and obvious) solution for Jones.

News came yesterday that former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones had been jailed for a probation violation due to the five traffic tickets he received during a stop in Albuquerque, New Mexico last Thursday.

The scene was a polarizing one, as opinions seem to waver between disgust at Jones’ inability to stay out of trouble to views that the police officer in question acted out of spite and was merely looking for any reason to ticket Jones.

The embattled pound-for-pound king, who was handed probation after he infamously ran a red light and hit a 25-year-old pregnant Albuquerque woman in April 2015, soon appeared in a video of the stop calling the officer a ‘f*****g liar’ and a ‘pig,’ and it remains to be seen if and how that affects his court appearance (courtesy of MMA Fighting):

It appears the world will find out Jones’ fate, at least to some degree, very soon, as a report surfaced from MMA Fighting today that Jones remains detained at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center and will appear before judge Michael Martinez at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning (April 1, 2016). The fighter was not granted bail due to his case being a probation violation, so the New Mexico Second Judicial District Court will decide Jones’ terms of release tomorrow.

The proceedings will air on Albuquerque news station KOB.

Jones was officially charged with misdemeanors drag racing, exhibition driving, use of modification of exhaust system, failure to maintain traffic lane and improper display of registration plate, with the final two charges being petty misdemeanors.

jon-jones-court

However, the much more pressing issue is that Jones was on probation for the felony hit-and-run from last year, and he was also stopped for driving 75 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone this January, for which he was granted a warning if he agreed to not get any more tickets for 90 days. He did not fulfill those terms, so even though many feel the police treated him unfairly in this situation, his fate will be up to Judge Martinez.

This obviously couldn’t be much more of a distraction as Jones prepares for arguably the biggest fight of his legendary MMA career against Daniel Cormier in the main event of April 23’s UFC 197, but Jones’ team is confident he’ll be able to clear his name when given a chance to ‘explain the facts.’

Based on his recent track record, however, it could be tough for a judge to side with Jones rather than the police in this instance, so we’ll just have to wait on pins and needles to find out if one of the biggest fights of 2016 is allowed to proceed.
