Former longtime UFC light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones will become the first UFC fighter to appeal a USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) sanction via arbitration, as his his hearing is set for October 31, 2016 in Los Angeles, per MMAFighting.com.

After dealing with a plethora of legal issues that forced him to be stripped of his title during 2015, Jones finally returned to action at April 2016’s UFC 197, scoring a decision victory over Ovince Saint Preux to become the interim 205-pound champion. He was then scheduled to rematch bitter rival Daniel Cormier in a unification bout at July 9’s UFC 200, but he was forced to withdraw just days prior after it was reported that he been flagged for a positive drug test.

Unsurprisingly, Jones denied taking any illegal substances in the aftermath of the news, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) made it clear that he had tested positive for two anti-estrogen agents. These substances are known as “specified substances”, which means Jones is facing a maximum one-year suspension from the third party testing organization, although his team has made it clear that they will be fighting the issue in hopes of coming to a settlement agreement.

In addition to his hearing with USADA, “Bones” must also appear before the commission. He was scheduled to meet with the commission earlier this month, but his hearing was rescheduled to November 10, 2016.

What outcome are you expecting from this situation?

Despite his laundry list of issues outside of the cage, former longtime light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones will likely receive an immediate title shot if he avoids a two-year suspension regarding a potential anti-doping violation. Former Jones foe and top 205-pound contender Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson doesn’t see this as fair, however:

“It wouldn’t be fair, giving him a title shot,” Gustafsson said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I’m not saying I’m going to get it. I’m just saying, after everything that happened, it’s not fair to other fighters too, who’ve been working their asses off and they’ve been fighting each other. So, not a title shot right away. Just give him a fun fight first and that’s it.”

Jones is currently serving out a temporary suspension, but he recently hinted that good news could be coming regarding his troubled situation that saw him get pulled from his highly-anticipated grudge match with Daniel Cormier just days prior to July 9’s UFC 200.

Gustafsson, on the other hand, recently got back in the win column with a decision victory over Jan Blachowicz in Hamburg, Germany after dropping two straight to Cormier and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. “The Mauler” admits that he’s unsure what lies ahead for him, but he did say that he would be open to a rematch with Jones, a fight that has been longed for ever since the two took part in an instant classic back in 2013:

“I’m up for suggestions (for my next opponent), so why not?” Gustafsson said. “But let’s see what they say. I’m up for suggestions, so whatever they give me, I’m down with a second fight with Jones, who knows. It’s going to be good though.”

Jon Jones & Brock Lesnar Could Potentially Face Shorter Suspensions

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones and former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar were both notified by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) of potential anti-doping violations regarding tests surrounding July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 card. Jones was pulled from his scheduled main event bout just days prior while Lesnar was notified of his potential mishap after his co-main event victory over Mark Hunt. Ironically, both men have apparently tested positive for anti-estrogen blockers, but they both also may luck out in a way.

Typically, a fighter who tests positive for the first time faces a minimum two-year suspension, but “Bones” and “The Beast” will both be facing one-year suspensions at most. This is because the substances the duo popped for are considered by the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) to be ‘specified substances’ according to a report from MMAFighting.com. Basically that means that “there is a greater likelihood that these (specified) substances could be susceptible to a credible non-doping explanation” as stated in the code. It has also been made clear that if a fighter is caught with a ‘specified substance’ in his system, he could face a punishment as a small as a public warning. That said fighter could also take the case to arbitration if he chooses not to accept the punishment.

Both Jones and Lesnar are also facing potential suspensions and fines from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Neither USADA nor the commission has yet to hand out a punishment, but both men are expected to appear before the NSAC later this year.

Jones last competed at April’s UFC 197 where he scored a decision victory over Ovince Saint Preux to become the interim UFC 205-pound champion after being stripped of his long-held title in 2015 due to legal issues. Prior to fighting Hunt, Lesnar had spent nearly five years away from the sport after dealing with a brutal battle with diverticulitis.

Anthony Johnson On Title Shot: Jon Jones Can Wait

No. 1-ranked UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson established himself as a legitimate title threat in the co-main event of last night’s (August 20, 2016) UFC 202 from Las Vegas, Nevada, bulldozing through No. 2-ranked Glover Teixeira in just 13 seconds. Although he admitted that he didn’t see it coming that fast, Johnson said in the aftermath of the bout that he had envisioned putting Teixeira away:

“Not 13 seconds, but I knew that I would knock him out eventually,” Johnson told MMAjunkie following the fight. “I had pictured it for a while now, and I told my coach this morning – I said, ‘If I’m going to knock Glover out, it’s going to be by uppercut,’ and it worked out.’

“I don’t really study fights too much. I might watch one or two rounds, and I can tell what a person likes to do. I just knew if I hit him with an uppercut, it would be lights out.”

With his latest win, “Rumble” should be in line for the next shot at 205-pound titleholder Daniel Cormier. Johnson and Cormier actually met once before in April 2015 for the vacant title in a bout that saw “Rumble” drop “DC” early on before Cormier locked in a fight ending rear-naked-choke. Now, however, Johnson feels as if he would get the better of Cormier:

“I’m just looking forward to it again; this is something that I’ve wanted for a long time,” Johnson said. “I only want to compete against the best, and so far since I’ve been back in the UFC, that’s what I’ve been doing. This is my second chance at a title, so I really want to go out and I want to dominate. Daniel, be said that when we’re in the cage it’s Daniel time, which is fine. It can be Daniel time. But at the end of the night, it’s going to be my time.

“Daniel took a hell of a shot, and he took it like a man. I was very surprised that he got back up because usually I hit you one time and you drop and you don’t get back up unless someone is helping you up, and Daniel got right back up and got moving. Hopefully I don’t get as frustrated next time and keep landing big shots on him and eventually put him out.”

One man that could potentially secure a title shot over Johnson would be former longtime divisional kingpin Jon “Bones” Jones, who was scheduled to face off with Cormier in the main event of July 9’s UFC 200. That fight fell through, however, after Jones was notified of a potential anti-doping violation. “Bones’” fighting future is currently unclear, but he did recently say that he expects ‘good news’.

Johnson doesn’t seem phased by Jones, however, as he said that the former champion can ‘wait’:

“Not at all – Daniel is beyond that, I’m beyond it,” Johnson said. “Daniel wants to fight me, and I want to fight him. As far as Jon, he can sit back and wait. That’s just what it is right now. That’s nothing against him, but that’s just what’s going to happen.

“Daniel said he wants to fight me. He said he’s not worried about Jon. We’re just not focused on it. For what? Until he’s back, what’s the point of even having a conversation about it?”

What do you make of the light heavyweight title picture?

Stop us if you’ve heard this before.

Oh wait. You most certainly have. Echoing shades of his good friend and peer Anderson Silva, word has arrived that interim UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ failed UFC drug test, which prevented his anticipated UFC 200 main event with Daniel Cormier from happening, was reportedly due to a pill for erectile dysfunction.

The news surfaced this evening from UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping on his “Countdown” podcast on Sirius XM Radio (via BJPenn.com):

There’s been no confirmation for just what caused the failed test, where Jones tested positive for two estrogen blockers. However, Jones recently posted a positive message online saying that he and his team had found some “really good” news and he expected to be back in the Octagon very soon.

Dana White backed that with his own statement that it was looking like Jones didn’t actually test positive for the two banned substances everyone thought he did. And with seemingly just as many random USADA tests failed due to tainted supplements as for legitimate banned substances, the UFC’s relatively young anti-doping program is clearly still undergoing some serious going pains.

Whether or not Jones becomes one of the UFC athletes to prove his failed test was due to a legitimately taken medication remains to be seen, yet either way, Jones could be forced to serve a small ban due to the fact he did not disclose he was taking the substance to USADA this summer.

Perhaps now we know why.

Glover Teixeira Compares Jon Jones To Lance Armstrong

Heading into his light heavyweight title fight with then champion Jon Jones at UFC 172 in April 2014, Brazilian slugger Glover Teixeira had won an incredible 20 straight fights including five straight inside of the Octagon, but he ended up proving to be no challenge to Jones, as he was dominated throughout their five round bout. Now, Teixeira finds himself in yet another fight with a title shot possibly looming in the balance, as he’s set to meet fellow former title challenger Anthony Johnson in the co-main event of this weekend’s (August 20, 2016) UFC 202. This time, however, the winner won’t be headed towards a scrap with Jones.

Jones’ fighting future is currently unclear after he was pulled from his scheduled UFC 200 (July 9, 2016) headliner with reinging champion Daniel Cormier due to a potential anti-doping violation. UFC President Dana White recently said that things are looking up for Jones, who’s had quite the troubled past few years. Teixeira, speaking on the matter, said it’s ‘sad’ to see ‘the best fighter in history’ do these types of things:

“It’s hard to comment. Jon Jones is the best fighter in history,” Teixeira said, according to a translation from Bloody Elbow’s Lucas Rezende. “He could be doing what Usain Bolt is doing. He’s one of the best fighters ever, defeated everybody in the weight class and then does what he’s been doing for the past couple of years. It’s sad. We want a chance to fight the guy. To get in there and knock him out. But it’s part of the sport.”

Continuing on, the Brazilian said that he hopes Jones rebounds, but he also compared the former pound-for-pound king to controversial cyclist Lance Armstrong, who had a plethora of his titles stripped after being busted by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency):

“We never want anything bad to happen, especially to an athlete like Jon Jones,” Teixeira said. “I hope he can get back on track. I don’t think Jon Jones needed to take anything. He’s younger than everybody else. Plus, if he took something he shouldn’t, he should lose his title.

“He’s like Lance Armstrong, who won all those titles and then they took them away from him. So the question remains. Was he really a champion or could anybody have been the champion if they were taking what he was taking?”

Do you agree with Teixeira’s comments?
