Anthony Johnson On Title Shot: Jon Jones Can Wait

No. 1-ranked UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson established himself as a legitimate title threat in the co-main event of last night’s (August 20, 2016) UFC 202 from Las Vegas, Nevada, bulldozing through No. 2-ranked Glover Teixeira in just 13 seconds. Although he admitted that he didn’t see it coming that fast, Johnson said in the aftermath of the bout that he had envisioned putting Teixeira away:

“Not 13 seconds, but I knew that I would knock him out eventually,” Johnson told MMAjunkie following the fight. “I had pictured it for a while now, and I told my coach this morning – I said, ‘If I’m going to knock Glover out, it’s going to be by uppercut,’ and it worked out.’

“I don’t really study fights too much. I might watch one or two rounds, and I can tell what a person likes to do. I just knew if I hit him with an uppercut, it would be lights out.”

With his latest win, “Rumble” should be in line for the next shot at 205-pound titleholder Daniel Cormier. Johnson and Cormier actually met once before in April 2015 for the vacant title in a bout that saw “Rumble” drop “DC” early on before Cormier locked in a fight ending rear-naked-choke. Now, however, Johnson feels as if he would get the better of Cormier:

“I’m just looking forward to it again; this is something that I’ve wanted for a long time,” Johnson said. “I only want to compete against the best, and so far since I’ve been back in the UFC, that’s what I’ve been doing. This is my second chance at a title, so I really want to go out and I want to dominate. Daniel, be said that when we’re in the cage it’s Daniel time, which is fine. It can be Daniel time. But at the end of the night, it’s going to be my time.

“Daniel took a hell of a shot, and he took it like a man. I was very surprised that he got back up because usually I hit you one time and you drop and you don’t get back up unless someone is helping you up, and Daniel got right back up and got moving. Hopefully I don’t get as frustrated next time and keep landing big shots on him and eventually put him out.”

One man that could potentially secure a title shot over Johnson would be former longtime divisional kingpin Jon “Bones” Jones, who was scheduled to face off with Cormier in the main event of July 9’s UFC 200. That fight fell through, however, after Jones was notified of a potential anti-doping violation. “Bones’” fighting future is currently unclear, but he did recently say that he expects ‘good news’.

Johnson doesn’t seem phased by Jones, however, as he said that the former champion can ‘wait’:

“Not at all – Daniel is beyond that, I’m beyond it,” Johnson said. “Daniel wants to fight me, and I want to fight him. As far as Jon, he can sit back and wait. That’s just what it is right now. That’s nothing against him, but that’s just what’s going to happen.

“Daniel said he wants to fight me. He said he’s not worried about Jon. We’re just not focused on it. For what? Until he’s back, what’s the point of even having a conversation about it?”

Heading into his light heavyweight title fight with then champion Jon Jones at UFC 172 in April 2014, Brazilian slugger Glover Teixeira had won an incredible 20 straight fights including five straight inside of the Octagon, but he ended up proving to be no challenge to Jones, as he was dominated throughout their five round bout. Now, Teixeira finds himself in yet another fight with a title shot possibly looming in the balance, as he’s set to meet fellow former title challenger Anthony Johnson in the co-main event of this weekend’s (August 20, 2016) UFC 202. This time, however, the winner won’t be headed towards a scrap with Jones.

Jones’ fighting future is currently unclear after he was pulled from his scheduled UFC 200 (July 9, 2016) headliner with reinging champion Daniel Cormier due to a potential anti-doping violation. UFC President Dana White recently said that things are looking up for Jones, who’s had quite the troubled past few years. Teixeira, speaking on the matter, said it’s ‘sad’ to see ‘the best fighter in history’ do these types of things:

“It’s hard to comment. Jon Jones is the best fighter in history,” Teixeira said, according to a translation from Bloody Elbow’s Lucas Rezende. “He could be doing what Usain Bolt is doing. He’s one of the best fighters ever, defeated everybody in the weight class and then does what he’s been doing for the past couple of years. It’s sad. We want a chance to fight the guy. To get in there and knock him out. But it’s part of the sport.”

Continuing on, the Brazilian said that he hopes Jones rebounds, but he also compared the former pound-for-pound king to controversial cyclist Lance Armstrong, who had a plethora of his titles stripped after being busted by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency):

“We never want anything bad to happen, especially to an athlete like Jon Jones,” Teixeira said. “I hope he can get back on track. I don’t think Jon Jones needed to take anything. He’s younger than everybody else. Plus, if he took something he shouldn’t, he should lose his title.

“He’s like Lance Armstrong, who won all those titles and then they took them away from him. So the question remains. Was he really a champion or could anybody have been the champion if they were taking what he was taking?”

Do you agree with Teixeira’s comments?

Dana White Thinks UFC 202 Will Break PPV Record

Arguably the biggest card of the year is finally set to take place this Saturday night (August 20, 2016), as UFC 202 will go down from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada presented live on pay-per-view (PPV). The UFC has put together quite a solid card from top to bottom, but all eyes are

Arguably the biggest card of the year is finally set to take place this Saturday night (August 20, 2016), as UFC 202 will go down from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada presented live on pay-per-view (PPV). The UFC has put together quite a solid card from top to bottom, but all eyes are likely fixated on the evening’s main event which features a highly anticipated rematch between Stockton native Nate Diaz and reigning featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor.

McGregor and Diaz met for a first time back at March 5’s UFC 196 where Diaz scored a shocking second round submission victory over the Irishman on one of the best-selling events of all-time, at least according to estimates. This time, however, UFC President Dana White, feels as if the two superstars will lead a record breaking pay-per-view:

“I do [think it will break the all-time PPV record] — it’s trending that way,” company president Dana White recently revealed during and appearance on ‘The Herd.‘ “These guys broke the record last time — and it looked like UFC 200 was going to break their record — then Jon Jones fell out. It looks like these guys will break the record again.”

While the UFC doesn’t release exact numbers when it comes to pay-per-view sales, White’s comments seem to indicate that UFC 196 broke the record previously set by July 2009’s UFC 100 which has been a constant debate.

Aside from Diaz vs. McGregor II, UFC 202 will feature a light heavyweight title eliminator between former title challengers Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and Glover Teixeira. Also on the main card, fan favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will square off with veteran Rick Story in a welterweight bout.

Does UFC 202 have what it takes to set a new record?
