Alexander Gustafsson pitches a rematch against Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title, a fight that fans have long been interested in watching.

Gustafsson was supposed to fight former title contender Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 227 pay-per-view event. But that fight got nixed after the former title contender pulled out of the bout due to injury.

This led Gustafsson waiting to see if the promotion could find him a suitable replacement, but he then suffered a minor injury. It was one of a few setbacks for a fighter who is just looking to build any momentum in the past few years.

Since losing to UFC light heavyweight champion Cormier at the UFC 192 pay-per-view event, he has won back-to-back fights as he scored a unanimous decision victory over Jan Blachowicz and knocking out Glover Teixeira.

Classic First Fight

There is some history between these two fighters as Jones successfully retained his light heavyweight title over Gustafsson back at UFC 165 in 2013 by decision. It was a close war that saw both men have their moments and one of the best fights in the history of the promotion. Some fight fans could even argue that the former title contender may have won the fight.

So much so that the talk of a rematch was real enough that it would’ve probably been made if Jones didn’t have personal and legal issues since that fight. Now that Jones is cleared to fight once late October rolls around, he is allowed to fight again. With the UFC needing big fights these days, the former title contender pitched his case for fighting Jones again with the light heavyweight title on the line. This is if Daniel Cormier vacates his title.

“Congratulations @jonnybones I’m really glad u are back!” Gustafsson wrote Thursday on Instagram. “@dc_mma is aiming for Brock… so let’s give the fans another legendary fight for the belt.”

In the UFC, especially in high-level championship bouts, the stakes are enormous, and the outcomes are unpredictable. Whether it be a major upset, a controversial decision, or a five-round instant classic, fight fans are often left wanting more, and because of that, rematches are so often demanded, although they aren’t always delivered upon.

Let’s take a look at seven UFC rematches that simply need to take place:

Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor

1) Conor McGregor vs. Jose Aldo II

The fighting future of reigning UFC featherweight and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is cloudier than ever, and not only because it’s unclear which title he’ll defend next, but also because he has a baby on the way.

McGregor most recently won the lightweight title, and although he’s keen on keeping both straps, some have predicted that he’ll never defend his 145-pound title again, which would be a shame, as a must see rematch awaits at featherweight.

The “Notorious” one took on former longtime champion Jose Aldo, who at the time was the only featherweight titleholder in the promotion’s history, last December. After months and months of build up, McGregor slept Aldo in just 13-seconds with a vicious left hand.

While the result was as decisive as it gets, fans were left with an odd feeling as they were expecting a war. The only way to silence the crowd is to run it back again.

Alexander Gustafsson On ‘Sad’ Jon Jones: He Threw It All Away

Alexander Gustafsson is a man closely tied to former longtime light heavyweight champion Jon Jones due to the fact that “The Mauler” took “Bones” to his limits in a five-round slug fest back in 2013. Jones has since lost his title due to legal issues that forced the UFC to suspend him in 2015, but Gustafsson remains as his stiffest challenge to date. “Bones’” latest issue outside of the cage came when he was pulled from his scheduled UFC 200 headliner just days prior after USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) notified him of a potential anti-doping agency.

As far as Jones’ latest issue goes, Gustafsson said it’s ‘sad’:

“As a role model, people look up to him. It’s just sad to see it,” said Gustafsson in an interview with Sporting News earlier this week. “He’s one of a kind. He’s been made something for him that nobody else has ever done in this sport and then he just throws it out the window. I just think it’s sad.”

A rematch between the two 205-pound titans has been wanted since the final bell rang to end their first bout, but at this point, “The Mauler” appears to be more focused on another title shot. If a bout with Jones could launch him into a shot at gold, however, then Gustafsson would be all for it:

“As long as he gets me to a title shot, I’m up for anything,” added Gustafsson regarding a potential rematch with Jones. “It’s not just because it’s Jon Jones. I want to take that fight. It’s not that. The faster I can get to it, I’ll take it. It doesn’t matter if it is Jon Jones or anybody else. The fight we had is history to me now.”

“It’s nothing that before I was looking for that rematch and I wanted it real bad, title fight or not. Right now, I just take every fight that’s logical and will take me somewhere. If it’s Jon Jones, it’s Jon Jones. I’m not going to wait for a second fight.”

Where should Gustafsson go after his win over Jan Blachowicz this past weekend?

Gustafsson To Jones: I Want The Title You Owe Me

Former long-time UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones will attempt to regain the title he had stripped from him when he meets champion Daniel “DC” Cormier in a rematch at April 23 2016’s UFC 197. Former long-time UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones will attempt to regain the title he had stripped from him when he meets champion Daniel “DC” Cormier in a rematch at April 23 2016’s UFC 197.

While the two men have a bitter rivalry amongst themselves to say the least, “Bones” isn’t all that interested in beating Cormier for a second time other than for the sake of getting his belt back.

The former champion actually recently stated that a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson, who pushed Jones to his limits back in 2013, actually means more to him than his upcoming showdown with “DC”.

To this day, many still believe that “The Mauler” got the better of Jones back at UFC 165, including the Swedish star himself.

Catching wind of Jones’ recent comments, Gustafsson took to his official Facebook page to respond, telling “Bones” to focus on his fight with Cormier, but also noting that he wants the belt that he feels he’s owed:

Jon, just focus on your fight with DC, I’m here, waiting for you. You want to get rid of the doubts you say? I say I just want that belt that that you owe me from our last fight!

Gustafsson is coming off of a loss to Cormier last October, but his exciting style has kept him in title talks for the last couple of years.

If Jones indeed gets by Cormier next month, it’s likely that he’ll finally meet top contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, but would you like to see the pound-for-pound king go round two with Gustafsson in the near future?
