Ok, So No One Really Knows What’s Up With Jon Jones’s Toe Yet

(Thursday’s media scrum with Dana White, via MMA Heat)

Just a couple days after floating the possibility that middleweight champion Anderson Silva and light-heavyweight king Jon Jones could meet in a super fight within the year, UFC President Dana White gave the media another tantalizingly qualified statement pertaining to the matchup.

“[Jones and I] talked [Wednesday],” White told assembled media during a scrum Thursday after the UFC 160 press conference. “His thing is, he says he feels great and the toe’s healing good. But the problem was that ligament. That ligament popped. Anywhere you tear a ligament, blood flow helps the thing repair itself and heal, and you don’t get a lot of blood flow at the toe.”

Jones injured his toe in his successful title defense over Chael Sonnen last month. He is currently in Russia but White says that when Jones returns, he’ll get an MRI to get a sense of how soon his toe might be ready for training and fighting again.

“Who knows – this thing could be six weeks, or it could be six months,” White said. “It’s a pain in the ass. It’s always some crazy little thing. He’s in Russia, and when he gets back he’s getting an MRI done on his toe again.”

So there you have it, ‘taters: Anderson Silva and Jon Jones will totally, maybe, fight each other this year. Silva just has to beat Chris Weidman in July and Jones’ mangled toe has to heal very quickly. Then all that will be left is for the two to want to fight each other which, you know, they haven’t shown any particular interest in doing for the past couple years.

So close.

Damn it, elusive super fights. Why can’t we quit you?

Jon Jones’ Toe and 7 MMA Injuries You’ll Never Be Able to Unsee

It is a curious fact about human psychology that we can’t help but gawp at the abnormal, even if it makes us want to regurgitate our lunch.

And so it is with MMA injuries.

They seem to have a hypnotic quality. Then again, once the initial shock wears off, we tend to respond to subsequent replays of the injury by squirming in our seats and gasping obscenities—at least I do, anyway.

When one thinks of injuries, images of broken bones tend to come to mind. However, this list is going to focus more broadly on injuries in general, rather than concentrating on snapped limbs.

As ever, feel free to leave your own suggestions in the comments.

Without further delay, I present to you seven MMA injuries you’ll never be able to unsee.

Dana White: UFC Champ Jon Jones Could Be Out Six Weeks, Could Be Out Six Months

The last time we saw UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones inside the Octagon, he made quick work of Chael Sonnen, earning a first-round TKO victory at UFC 159.  Through the course of the four-and-a-half-minute bout, Sonnen landed a mere six significant strikes, seemingly setting Jones up for a quick turnaround.

The MMA gods, being a vindictive bunch, had other plans for the light heavyweight kingpin.

When the celebrating champion took a brief glance down to the mat, he saw something no one should ever have to see. The bone of Jones’ left big toe was jutting through the skin, and his toe was bent at an unnatural angle.

When the damage was assessed, it was not as severe as it first appeared. For starters, the toe was not broken, just badly dislocated.

Jones has been on the mend, but little has been discussed about when he will be back in the Octagon.

UFC president Dana White talked about the promotion’s hobbled champion on Thursday, telling the media, “We talked yesterday.  He’s feeling great, his toe is healing good, but the problem is the ligament. That ligament popped and anywhere you tear a ligament blood flow helps the thing heal and you don’t get a lot of blood flow in the toe.”

As for when Jones will be back in the cage, White was unsure: “The thing could be six weeks, it could be six months.  It’s a pain in the ass.”

More info will be known early next week on Jones.  The champion is currently in Russia, but when he returns, which White said would be on Monday, he will get another MRI on the toe.

Once the results of that MRI are known, speculation will begin as to who Jones will face in his next title defense along with when and where that fight will take place.

Why Jon Jones Has Nothing Left to Prove at Light Heavyweight

Jon Jones, UFC light heavyweight champion, has absolutely nothing left to prove in the division. None.

Some of you are sitting behind your computer screens or smart phones saying that he still has challenges left. Well, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but he doesn’t. He is, and has been, the greatest light heavyweight of all time.

Lets begin by recapping his light heavyweight tenure.

Jones made his debut as a late replacement against a budding prospect in Andre Gusmao. Jones won, and the curiosity level around the sport piqued. From 2009-2010, he would go 4-1 with his lone loss being highly controversial vs. Matt Hamill. Many still view the champion as being undefeated.

After 2010, Jones was already seen as the future of the division, but next to no one expected his rise to be as meteoric. Next to no one expected the single greatest year in division history.

In the span of 11 months, Jones dispatched of rising contender Ryan Bader, won the championship on short notice against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, dominated former champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and left former champion Lyoto Machida unconscious on the canvas.

He is 3-0 since that incredible calendar year, and there is nothing left for him in the division. Is it really necessary for him to defend the title once more to break Tito Ortiz’s record for fans to know he’s the greatest the division has ever seen? No.

Dan Henderson and Alexander Gustafsson seem to be the only challengers left that he has yet to face. Henderson is older, slow and plodding. He has one great strike, and his wrestling is vastly overrated in the MMA terms.

Gustafsson is a quality prospect, but one who has already shown holes in his game that Jones would have little problem with.

Don’t get me wrong, I would pay to watch those fights. I just would not be paying for competitive action. I would be paying to see Jones’ brilliance in the Octagon.

Then there is the inevitable superfight discussion against Anderson Silva. Does that really add to Jones’ legacy? Think about it.

Silva is 38 years old. And he is a middleweight. Jones is a freak athlete that is still growing and learning at the ripe age of 25. And he is a light heavyweight.

Jones is supposed to win that fight. Yes, Silva is the greatest we have seen but weight classes are in place for a reason. The physical gifts Jones has are his greatest asset, and he uses them better than the technical skills he is continuing to refine.

I hate to shatter your dreams, but Jones would defeat Silva and make it look relatively easy in the process.

The move to heavyweight is his only great challenge.

The only question Jones has to answer is if he wants to test himself. If he does, he will make the trek to heavyweight. However, that is not an easy decision. If could elevate him to being one of the greatest fighters of all time, or alter his current trajectory in a downward fashion. He won’t take that decision lightly.

But one thing is for certain…there is nothing left for him to prove at 205 pounds.

Quote of the Day: Did Jon Jones Beat Some Much-Needed Humility Into Chael Sonnen?

(“And you tell Anderson that if he wants the true middleweight belt, he can ask me nicely and I will have it back by lunch!” Photo via Getty Images.)

When asked by MMA Heat’s Karyn Bryant about the likelihood of a potential fight with Wanderlei Silva next, Chael P. Sonnen recently stated the following (emphasis mine):

I’m not looking for it anymore, I don’t like to bully guys. I tried to fight him, he doesn’t want to fight. I’m not gonna stick a finger in a guy’s chest. If a guy says ‘no,’ I’m not gonna be a jerk about it.

We shit you not, that quote (not the caption one, that’s fake and you damn well know it) came directly from the mouth of Chael P. Sonnen. As in the Chael P. Sonnen who once threatened to smack Anderson Silva’s wife on the ass. As in the Chael P. Sonnen who once declared that Lance Armstrong gave himself cancer through PED use (which to be fair, he got the PED part right). As in the Chael P. Sonnen who called Wanderlei Silva a “dirtbag” some three weeks ago when challenging him to a fight in the first place.

Either Jon Jones succeeded where Anderson Silva failed and managed to actually beat some humility into “The American Gangster” or Wandy’s threat to “suck his blood” was just a little too far outside the comfort zone of his Christian, conservative-Republican background to tolerate. Or Wandy has been offered the fight, turned it down, and is pulling another prank on us. Or Joe Silva dropped his cell phone in the toilet and hasn’t had access to the Internet since April.

Whatever the case may be, we suddenly, like, really need to see this fight. So touche, Chael. Tou-fuckin’-che.

On This Day in MMA History: Jon Jones Maybe Not So Damn Perfect, After All

“On This Day in MMA History” pays tribute to some of the more bizarre and infamous news stories of MMA’s past. The following article was originally published on May 19th, 2012, one year ago today. Note: We’ve placed a few more notable anniversaries at the end of this post.

BREAKING: Jon Jones Arrested for DUI in Binghamton, NY

This doesn’t look good, folks. Initially reported by TMZ.com and confirmed by Josh Gross, UFC Light-Heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been arrested in Binghamton, New York on DUI charges after totaling his Bentley. From TMZ:

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … Jones was involved in an accident at around 5:00 AM in Binghamton, NY. We’re told the car — which Jones crashed into a pole — was totaled and cops arrested Jones on the scene for DUI.

According to our sources, Jones was taken into custody by Broome County Sheriff and bailed out a few hours later … by his mom. Jones is from nearby Ithaca.

Fortunately for Jones, it appears that he only suffered minor injuries, and it does not appear that anyone else was injured from this accident. It is unclear whether or not there were any passengers in the car at the time of the accident.

As of this writing, Dana White’s only response to the incident has been a text to TMZ, saying “Wow, i guess its not my week is it?”. Given the week he’s had, that may be putting it mildly. Neither Jones nor his teammates will be commenting on the arrest at this time.

In and of itself, the incident isn’t too surprising: Jon Jones is a young, talented and seemingly invincible athlete. Like many other athletes in his position, Jones decided to get behind the wheel after clearly drinking too much. Or for that matter, like many of those reading this article, myself included, at one point or another. I’m not saying that drunk driving isn’t a reckless, stupid thing to do, but I also wouldn’t be surprised to see the media be harsher on Jon Jones than they would on, say, Braylon Edwards.

It will be interesting to see how this story develops. Jon Jones is the face of the UFC — and in many ways, mixed martial arts. How will the mainstream media cover this incident? How will Jones be disciplined for this? Will any of his sponsors bail on him? And how will this story be treated in the state of New York, which recently made viewing child porn legal while deeming that MMA should remain illegal? We’ll keep you up to date as more details become available.

Update: A statement from First Round Management has been forwarded to Cagepotato.com:

Note: There will be no interviews granted at this time from Jon Jones, or any of his representatives

“I can confirm that Jon Jones was arrested early this morning on suspicion of DUI. While the facts of this situation are still being gathered and situated, First Round Management fully supports Jon and we are asking for fans and media to respect the privacy of Jon and his family during this time.”
