Jorge Masvidal talks pro boxing debut

MMA will always be Jorge Masvidal‘s first love, but the former UFC star is ready to test his skills in the boxing ring.

After a decade of competing inside the Octagon, Masvidal is gearing up for a return to the world of combat sports. But this time, instead of strapping on a pair of four-ounce gloves, he’ll be fitted for a pair of eight-ouncers as he prepares to make his professional debut under his own Gamebred Boxing banner.

“I’m definitely trying to do some boxing matches,” Masvidal told Mike Owens in a LowKick MMA exclusive interview. “I love MMA. It’s my favorite sport in the whole world and I did it for 20 years. It’ll always be number one to me, but there’s a chance to do some boxing matches. I wouldn’t mind breaking somebody’s face. Boxing was the first combat sport that I really discovered and started doing. Then four or five years later, I discovered MMA.

“I took off on my MMA journey, but I always loved boxing. Once I got to the UFC, I signed a strict contract. They wouldn’t let us do anything else so I never got to test my boxing skills. I think it’s a good time for me now to test my boxing skills.

Jorge Masvidal ready to show the next generation how it’s done

Who Masvidal faces in his anticipated boxing debut is still to be determined. However, recent rumors have suggested that a fight with another former UFC fan favorite — Nate Diaz — is in the works. But no matter who Masvidal mixes it up with inside the squared circle, the former BMF titleholder will be happy to show the up-and-comers what it takes to be elite, whether it be in a cage or a ring.

“You have to put in the time and effort to get the conditioning,” Masvidal added. “A lot of these guys don’t do that. They’re doing half-assed jobs. That’s why I’m able to go out there and be mean every second of every minute and every minute of every round.

“They’re f*cking taking time off. They’re f*cking pointing at each other. Taking selfies in the f*cking ring. When I go in there, it’s gonna be to scrap. Bring that beautiful f*cking science that boxing is and use a lot of conditioning and a lot of emotion to f*cking hurt these guys.”

Masvidal and Diaz previously met at UFC 244 in November 2019 for the inaugural BMF belt. ‘Gamebred’ won the bout via TKO following a doctor’s stoppage after the third round. It would be the last time he saw his hand raised inside the Octagon.

Bellator Middleweight champion, Johnny Eblen discusses teammate Jorge Masvidal’s return to fighting.

Masivdal officially retired in April of 2023 after dropping a decision against Gilbert Burns, marking his fourth loss in a row. It was clear that the original BMF champion had lost a step, even admitting so himself and seemed an appropriate time to retire in front of a roaring support in his hometown of Miami.

However, like many fighters, it seems that Jorge Masvidal is not done with combat just yet and is set to test the waters in boxing. ‘Gamebred’ is set to take on Nate Diaz next month in Las Vegas and will be promoted by Happy Punch after the UFC had given the green light.

Jorge Masvidal backed to make successful boxing move

Talking with The AllStar, fellow American Top Team fighter, Eblen, discussed Masvidal unretiring and believed it was a good step and could add to his already lengthy resume.

“I think he misses it, and I’m glad he’s getting his feet wet again,” Eblen began. “Especially in boxing, I think it’s gonna be a great avenue for him to continuing his legacy and his journey in martial arts, and also just stay relevant, you know? When you build such a big name and fall off the face of the earth — I mean, not that he did, but like, not being as active fight-wise, it’s not as exciting.” (H/T MMA Mania)

Eblen claims that despite being 39-years-old and Masvidal having an extended time off, the former title challenger will make a smooth transition to boxing.

“He has his fight promotion, which is doing really well,” Eblen added. “He has a lot of things going on. I think him jumping back into fighting, especially in boxing, is gonna be huge because of his name and he’s gonna stay relevant.”

“And also, he’s gonna surprise a lot of people. That dude has hands, and he’s f—ing good, man. A lot of the problems he had in MMA was people wanted to take him down. Now we’re boxing, you can’t take anybody down. You gotta strike with the guy.”

Jorge Masvidal massive weight gain since UFC retirement he's been enjoying the 3 pieces

Former two-time welterweight championship challenger, Jorge Masvidal has been accused of quite significantly overindulging since retiring from combat sports last April – with fans noting an apparent weight gain for the Floridian, while watching a Power Slap event in Las Vegas over the weekend.

Masvidal, a former two-time undisputed welterweight championship chaser and the inaugural symbolic BMF titleholder, called time on his career after suffering his fourth consecutive loss in the form of a decision defeat to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287.

Fans claim Jorge Masvidal has piled on weight since retiring

And linked with a potential return to combat sports in the form of a boxing fight – as soon as next month – which has still yet to be officially booked, Masvidal has been linked to a rematch with fellow UFC veteran, Nate Diaz.

Attending a Power Slap event in ‘Sin City’ – seated next to former undisputed middleweight champion, Sean Strickland, Masvidal was accused of piling on significant weight on social media – as he was pictured meeting with fans at the arena

Twice sharing the Octagon with former undisputed welterweight champion and pound-for-pound number one Kamaru Usman, Masvidal first dropped a decision loss in a 2020 short-notice fight in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

And the following year, Masvidal came up short in an immediate championship rematch, dropping a thunderous second round one-punch KO loss to his Nigerian rival in the pair’s showdown in his home state.

Linked with a potential move to BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) in his time away from the Octagon – in the form of a re-run with Stockton native, Diaz, Masvidal was recently the subject of some significant trolling from fellow Floridian, Rick Ross – who questioned his status as the apparent ‘King of Miami’.

Rick Ross mocks UFC star Jorge Masvidal as King of Miami he got the knee

Rapper Rick Ross dismisses former UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal’s status as ‘king of  Miami’.

Throughout his 20-year MMA career, Masvidal proudly represented his hometown of Miami, Florida. ‘Gamebred’ first came to prominence participating in backyard bare-knuckle fights, the same circuit as Kimbo Slice.

Masvidal perfectly embodied Miami, a flashy and fearless Cuban American who would eventually adopt the moniker ‘The King of Miami during the latter stages of his career.

However another famous 305 resident laughed off any sort of claim Jorge Masvidal had. Appearing on Logan Paul’s podcast, Impaulsive, Ross was asked about Masvidal.

“Who is that?” responded Ross.

The co-host would attempt to clarify for the hip-hop giant, pointing to Masvidal’s viral flying knee knockout of Ben Askren that rocketed him to the very top of the sport.

“Man, if he did a knee, congratulations, Ross said. “I mean, you did a knee. You know what I’m saying? Shoutout to George. He did the knee. You know what I’m saying? Shoutout to George, man. I heard you did the knee.”

Is Jorge Masvidal making a comeback to fighting?

Masvidal officially retired following his fight against Gilbert Burns in April of last year in what was his fourth loss in a row. However, Masvidal recently ‘unretired’ and is targeted to take on Nate Diaz in a boxing match next month.

It will be a rematch of their 2019 fight for the ‘BMF’ title and will be put on by Happy Punch, who has been one of the leading promoters in the influencer boxing scene.

It’s unclear whether this will be a one-off for Masvidal or if he intends to pursue further fights down the line. If organisations are willing to pay millions for these exhibition contests, good for them, MMA is a rough game.

BKFC Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal

Could we see UFC legends Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal trade in their four-ounce gloves for a pair of knuckle wraps?

With Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship closing in on another big round of investment into the growing promotion, founder David Feldman sees a strong future for the company.

“I’m expecting one [investment] agreement tomorrow, the rest of the crew is going to be at our fight on Feb. 2 to try and get that [deal] done,” Feldman told Sportsnaut in an exclusive interview. “We’ll also have some really big people influential people in the investment world at that event. Things are looking really great for us.”

With the BKFC about to get a big bump in its bank account, many expect the promotion to make one or two blockbuster signings for 2024. Of the names regularly linked to the bare-knuckle fight group is fan favorite Nate Diaz. The ‘Stockton Samurai’ walked away from the UFC after 15 years with the organization to pursue other lucrative opportunities outside of the Octagon. In August, he went the distance with Jake Paul in a 10-round boxing match, but since then, fans have been eager to find out what’s next for the TUF alumnus.

Asked about the possibility of adding Diaz to the BKFC roster, Feldman revealed that the promotion had conversations with him, but the damage he has sustained over the years makes him an unlikely candidate for the world of bare-knuckle boxing.

“It’s not for him, to be honest with you, but we had great conversations,” said Feldman. “He’s a nice guy. [His] team was awesome, great to deal with. It was just that he has a lot of cuts [from his career] and this isn’t for him. He doesn’t want to get cut up and that’s why he’s going to stay away from this right now. I would be very shocked if you saw Nate Diaz in [our] ring. Only because of that.”

Feldman Talks Rumored Rematch Between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal

Another name fight fans would love to see inside the BKFC squared circle is Jorge Masvidal. The former fighter turned promoter recently teased that his retirement following UFC 287 is over, though he has not officially announced when, where, or who he will be fighting in his return.

“We actually had the first couple of Gamebred events on our app. I had no problem with that. I don’t see them as competition,” Feldman says. “I see them as helping grow the sport of bare-knuckle and getting bare-knuckle fighting out there. … Jorge Masvidal, I would love to have him.

“But I think he’s got a fight — not completely scheduled — but it looks like he’s going to fight Nate Diaz in boxing, and if he does, who knows if that’s going to be his last one or not. This is his sport so we’d love to welcome him here. Absolutely, that would be something we’d be interested in.”

Masvidal and Diaz faced each other in the main event of UFC 244 in 2019 for the inaugural BMF title. “Gamebred” won via third-round doctor stoppage due to cuts sustained by Diaz.

Jorge Masvidal confirms he's unretired from MMA sends fans into raptures about UFC return

Former undisputed welterweight title challenger, Jorge Masvidal has opened and currently remains a betting favorite to beat his fellow UFC alum, Nate Diaz in a potential boxing rematch as soon as March – as the duo find themselves linked to a blockbuster re-run – this time in the squared circle.

Masvidal, a former undisputed welterweight title chaser twice during his tenure with the Dana White-led UFC, called time on his storied combat sports career back in April of last year, after suffering his fourth consecutive Octagon loss in the form of decision defeat to Gilbert Burns in his hometown.

As for Diaz, the Stockton veteran departed the promotion back in 2022, landing a rallying fourth round guillotine choke submission win over former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson in the pair’s impromptu UFC 279 headliner at the welterweight limit.

Making his professional boxing debut back in August, Diaz headlined a card in Texas against professional boxer, Jake Paul, suffering a one-sided unanimous decision loss in his first outing in the squared circle – which included a late knockdown.

And despite his more recent boxing experience, Diaz has opened as a +250 betting underdog to beat Floridian striker, Masvidal, who himself is sitting as an impressive -325 betting favorite at the time of publication.

Jorge Masvidal emerges as betting favorite to beat Nate Diaz

Yet to officially book their expected Las Vegas clash, fans are sure to place a wide and varied array of bets and wagers on an earmarked rematch between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz – and from the likes of ‘Sin City’ – all the way ‘Down Under’, some of the best-recognised slots and gambling games bring with them many instant withdrawal casino Australia if a punter is successful with their flutters and wagers.

Sharing a distinct history, Jorge Masvidal became the inaugural BMF championship winner under the banner of the UFC back in 2019 against the Stockton native, headlining a November pay-per-view that year at Madison Square Garden.

Starting in vicious fashion, Jorge Masvidal elbowed his way through Diaz early in the bout against the fence following a clinch exchange, before the latter walked onto a massive high kick in an attempt to evade, sending him to the canvas with a massive laceration surrounding his notorious scar tissue.

Dropped once again later in the bout following a brutal right body kick from Masvidal, Diaz was controversially prevented from answering a fourth round against the former by the Octagon-side physician, who determined that the gushing blood around The Ultimate Fighter victor’s right eye was too severe, paired with a nasty cut around his eye socket.

Going to on fight for undisputed welterweight gold twice after hid symbolic victory against Diaz, Jorge Masvidal would first fight to a unanimous decision loss to two-fight rival, Kamaru Usman in a short-notice clash, before returning to fight him in an immediate rematch – dropping a hellacious second round KO of his own in Florida in a championship re-run.

Continually linked with a return to the UFC, potentially to settle his rivalry with former two-time foe, Conor McGregor, Diaz’s next venture appears all but signed to occur in the boxing ring once more.
