Last night’s (Saturday December 3, 2016) Ultimate Fighter Season 24 Finale (TUF 24 Finale) card featured a welterweight clash between UFC veterans Jake Ellenberger and Jorge Masvidal.

Ellenberger came off of his amazing first round knockout win over Matt Brown, while Masvidal was coming off of a unanimous decision win over Ross Pearson at UFC 201 in July. The first round started off with Ellenberger landing some nice strikes, but Masvidal handled them very well.

Masvidal would then unload a blitz on Ellenberger that nearly finished him, but the veteran was able to rally back and regain himself. Then in an odd situation Ellenberger got his foot stuck in the cage and was trying to get it out, but Masvidal would win after capitalizing and jumping on Ellenberger with a plethora of punches to force referee Herb Dean to call the bout off.

A welterweight bout between two veteran fighters went down inside the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 24 Finale. The 170-pound stalwarts were Jorge Masvidal (31-11) and Jake Ellenberger (31-12).

“Gamebred” earned a TKO win and despite an impressive performance, his victory was unusual to say the least.

Ellenberger threw a leg kick early and Masvidal answered with one of his own. “Gamebred” caught a leg and landed two left hooks. A combination landed for “Juggernaut.” Masvidal swarmed Ellenberger with a combination including a knee to the head. He dropped his opponent and continued throwing leather. They engaged in the clinch and separated. Blood trickled down the nose of Ellenberger. A hard leg kick landed for “Gamebred.” A wheel kick found the mark for Masvidal.

Ellenberger ran at Masvidal, but his toes got caught in the fence. He had trouble getting his foot free as Masvidal threw some punches. Time was called initially for a malfunction. Referee Herb Dean ended the fight and Masvidal was awarded the TKO win in bizarre fashion.

Final Result: Jorge Masvidal def. Jake Ellenberger via TKO – R1, 4:05

Welterweights Jake Ellenberger and Jorge Masvidal have a date, as they will square off at The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale this December.

Ellenberger (31-11) saved his UFC career with a win over Matt Brown in July. The former contender had lost five of six to that point, but became the first fighter to stop Brown via strikes when he peppered him with shots.

Masvidal (30-11) has been left waiting for an opponent after fights with Kelvin Gastelum and others were switched. “Gamebred” is 2-2 since moving up to welterweight.

The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale takes place December 3 from The Pearl at The Palms Casino in Las Vegas. In the main event, Demetrious Johnson is expected to defend his flyweight title vs. the winner of TUF 24.

Kelvin Gastelum will return to Mexico for his next fight, as the former Ultimate Fighter winner meets Jorge Masvidal at UFC Fight Night 98.

Gastelum (12-2) has fought twice before in Mexico City, defeating Jake Ellenberger and Nate Marquardt. He is also coming off a victory over former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks in July.

Masvidal (30-11) has gone 7-4 inside the Octagon, besting Ross Pearson that same month of Gastelum’s win vs. Hendricks. Before the win, “Gamebred” had dropped split decisions to Benson Henderson and Lorenz Larkin.

UFC Fight Night 98 goes down November 5 from Mexico City and features Rafael dos Anjos vs. Tony Ferguson in the main event.

Thanks to the use of social media, fighters can take a step back, think about the rankings and play matchmaker.

That’s exactly what UFC 201 winners Jorge Masvidal and Jake Ellenberger did on Twitter Monday.

Masvidal earned a win this weekend over Ross Pearson, while Ellenberger saved his job in the UFC by finishing Matt Brown.

Now, the two want to square off in a key welterweight showdown.

Ross Pearson Moves Up To Welterweight For Veteran Challenge At UFC 201

It looks like Ross Pearson isn’t wasting any time getting back into the cage. It looks like Ross Pearson isn’t wasting any time getting back into the cage.

Following a close decision loss to former Bellator champ Will Brooks at last Friday’s (July 8, 2016) The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 23 Finale from Las Vegas, news arrived from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto today that ‘The Real Deal’ will be moving up to 170 pounds to take on veteran Jorge Masvidal at July 30’s UFC 201, from Atlanta, Georgia.

The TUF 9 winner has fought most of his lengthy 20-fight UFC career at 155 pounds, although he did fight at 145 at one point. He’ll join a long list of fighters who found the taxing weight cuts too strenuous on their bodies. Pearson will replace Siyar Bahadurzada, who was removed from the bout due to illness.

Pearson has an overall UFC record of 11-8(1), and owns wins over names like Gray Maynard, Sam Stout, Paul Felder, and Chad Laprise in the octagon. He’ll face off against a tough test in Masvidal, another fighter who has shown flashes of brilliance only to fall just short to the top names he’s fought in the UFC.

‘Gamebred’ recently left the lightweight division in favor of welterweight himself, although the results have been mixed. After stopping Cezar Ferreira at last summer’s TUF 21 Finale, Masvidal lost two split decisions – something that’s becoming his Achilles’ heel due to his ultra-smooth, laid-back style – to former lightweight champion Benson Henderson and Lorenz Larkin. Needless to say, both he and Pearson could both use a big win on the big stage.

Set to go down from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, UFC 201 is headlined by the welterweight title match-up between Robbie Lawler and Tyron Woodley.
