Throughout UFC history there have been plenty of legitimate cases where an interim title was necessary in order to keep things moving in the absence of a champion.

However, during a down year for pay-per-view (PPV) sales in 2017, the concept of an interim belt has also been needlessly applied to boost lagging PPVs, or to move on from an uninjured yet still inactive title holder.

We broke down the seven most pointless title bouts in UFC history, and the results may surprise you. Check them out:

7. Tony Ferguson vs Kevin Lee – UFC 216

If Conor McGregor weren’t holding up the otherwise supremely talented UFC lightweight arena, no one would complain about this main event fight at next week’s (Sat., October 7, 2017) UFC 216 being for the lightweight belt.

However, the fact that this weight class even needs an interim belt is a joke. McGregor left the division in a complete logjam while pursuing and eventually earning a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. That sabbatical did no one any favors except McGregor himself, who hasn’t defended the belt since winning it from Eddie Alvarez back at UFC 205 last November.

The worst part is, there’s zero guarantee that the winner of this interim belt will actually face McGregor upon his return. With talks of a Nate Diaz trilogy gaining traction, the interim titleholder could be stuck not fighting for the actual strap for quite some time.

Not to mention, the real interim title fight probably should have been Ferguson vs Nurmagomedov, the two rightful heirs to the lightweight throne, but Nurmagomedov’s spotty track record and inactivity forced the UFC’s hand into finding a capable dance partner.

UFC 200 press conference live stream starts at 3 PM ET here on LowKick.

UFC 200 fight week is upon us, and we MMA fans are beginning to get in to the festive swing of things. It’s been seven years since the first milestone event of UFC 100 went down, and how things have changed since then. What has stayed the same is the presence of Brock Lesnar, albeit on short notice and reportedly for one fight, as the WWE crossover looks to erase the memories of his brutal losses in 2010/11. He faces a stone cold knockout puncher in Mark Hunt and many feel this is going to be a rude welcoming back for the ex-UFC heavyweight champion.

That’s not even the headliner for the evening, as Lesnar vs. Hunt plays second fiddle to the rematch between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones. The light-heavyweight championship became vacant when Jones was temporarily banished by the UFC, and Cormier took the throne in his absence. After losing to ‘Bones’ at UFC 182 following a hateful rivalry, ‘DC’ is seeking redemption in the second defense of the belt.

Don’t sleep on the interim featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar, as the two former champions of 145 and 155 pounds respectively meet for the second time. After his devastating KO loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 194, ‘Scarface’ is looking to get back on track and take back the junior title, whole Edgar seeks revenge for his narrow loss to Aldo at UFC 156 in 2013.

Another division and another championship fight as Miesha Tate looks to make her first defense of the women’s 135-pound strap against Amanda Nunes. After choking Holly Holm out cold at UFC 195, ‘Cupcake’ is hoping to prove she’s here to stay, while Nunes wants to make it four straight and keep the title changing hands. Former heavyweight boss Cain Velasquez is also back in action, taking on Hawaiian heavy hitter Travis Browne to open the main card on July 9.

Stay tuned to LowKick as we celebrate the biggest fight week EVER!

From a quiet news week in the mixed martial arts community, to three days of madness. The headline news has come out of nowhere on this non-event week, as the promotion announced a number of huge fights, the biggest being the UFC 200 main event. Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz will rematch their UFC 196 welterweight showdown, staying at 170 pounds, in the main event of the July 9 milestone pay-per-view card. Also announced, and at first thought to be the co-main event, was the interim featherweight title bout.

Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar will duke it out for the junior strap, but UFC president Dana White later said this was not the co-main for UFC 200, and that exact fight is yet to be announced. So the speculation on the (likely) title fight that will fill the second place spot at the landmark PPV will continue, and overnight we’ve seen many social media reactions to the announcements so far for July 9.
