Earlier last week, No. 2-ranked featherweight Frankie Edgar commented on his upcoming UFC 200 opponent Jose Aldo’s history of pulling out of fights, and it didn’t sit well with the former Brazilian champion.

Here’s what Edgar had to say:

“We were supposed to fight earlier and he had a little boo-boo on his foot from a motorcycle accident and we had to reschedule. I highly doubt he’s ever fought injured,” Edgar said.

“If he did, he must fight injured all the time because how much does this guy pull out of fights?

“I’m just trying to focus on him but I won’t be surprised if that happens, obviously,” Edgar said. “You’re seeing it happen in every weight class, not just us, but especially with Aldo. Anything can happen.

“I’m just going to train hard for Aldo and if we need to make an adjustment, we can do it on the fly.”

FrankieEdgarPresserIn a recent UFC 200 media scrum in Brazil (courtesy of MMA Fighting), Aldo was given the opportunity to respond to Edgar’s comments:

“You have to know if you’re injured or not before talking,” Aldo said. “I couldn’t care less what he says or doesn’t say. I know I’m training hard here. I will be in great shape in the fight. I’m hungry to win this fight. There was no fight last time (against Conor McGregor), so we’ll see.

“I couldn’t care less. F–k him. I don’t care. I care about my gym and my training. We’ll settle that face to face.”

Aldo stated he’s taken a step back when it comes to working on his kickboxing, however, he claims he’s as sharp as ever in his standup game and will give Edgar a hard time if he wants to stand and strike with him:

“I know I can evolve a lot,” said Aldo. “Something I always liked to train is kickboxing. I did it every day, but stopped doing it recently. I missed that a little. I wanted to compete in jiu-jitsu too, but had no time available. But I’m up to date in this area. I see myself as the Jose Aldo from WEC again.”

“My striking. He won’t even see me,” Aldo said. “If he thinks he’s fast, it’s a whole different speed. He will be frustrated standing in there.

jose aldo momentsDespite Edgar’s current five-fight win streak, Aldo does not seem to be impressed and said he has not seen a big evolution in ‘The Answer’s’ game:

“(Edgar) was doing five-round fights, except the last one. Chad (Mendes) was better, controlling the fight, and (Edgar) connected a punch and it’s over. I don’t see this big evolution, no. He’s adapting to the weight cut, but outside of that, I don’t see a big deal. He thinks he’s fast, but I don’t see him being that fast.”

“Remember what happened in the last fight, that (McGregor) caught me and I went down. We have to be careful because a punch can end the fight,” Aldo said. “I want to go in there and do my job, and I know (nobody) will get close to me.”

Aldo and Edgar are set to thrown down at UFC 200 live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 9, 2016.

Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will get another shot at gold when UFC 200 comes around, but it’s not what he’d hoped for. The junior belt will be on the line as the head of the division remains shrouded in a controversial stand off between Conor McGregor and the promotion. Many have argued that McGregor’s protest against his contractual obligations could go on to serve fighters of the next generation, but that probably doesn’t make the pill of an interim title any sweeter for Aldo or his July 9 opponent Frankie Edgar.

As ‘The Notorious’ continues to be heavily linked to a welterweight rematch with Nate Diaz, who had stopped Conor McGregor inside two rounds at UFC 196, the truth is that nobody knows when the 145-pound strap will be defended next. There’s even the chance that the undisputed title could in fact be on the line at UFC 200, if the rumours of McGregor not wanting to fight at featherweight again are true. With all these variables in play, a bet on either scenario would be a punt at best.

Aldo vs Edgar

‘Scarface’ was the original UFC featherweight champion, and before colliding with Conor McGregor at UFC 194 last year, was widely considered a top three pound-for-pound staple. Once the octagon door shut on Aldo and the interim champ of the time McGregor, it would only be 13 seconds and one well timed punch before all those accolades became a thing of the past. As much as you’d imagine Aldo to be humble in defeat, truth be told he really hasn’t been, but can you blame him?

At the time of the fight last December, the promotion appeared to be carving the path for McGregor’s title shot with opponent’s like Dennis Siver who, let’s be frank, had no place in the octagon with ‘The Notorious,’ let alone in a title contender fight. Perhaps that statement is slightly opinion driven, and the Irish star would later go on to defeat the wrestler Chad Mendes when Aldo was injured and pulled out of UFC 189.

Then there was the issues of Reebok, poor fighter pay and mistreatment by the UFC, problems that Jose Aldo faced head on, publicly making his stance against the promotion’s practices. Unfortunately for the Brazilian MMA legend, these opinions came back to haunt him when the UFC released harrowing scenes of his post KO loss to McGregor.

So now booked in against Frankie Edgar for the second fight in their illustrious careers, what’s driving the former champion? Yep, you guessed it, it’s a little Irish guy…

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is once again lined up with Nate Diaz, again at welterweight, in the UFC 200 main event. The repercussions of this move by ‘The Notorious’ and the UFC mean that the 145-pound title has been placed on the back burner. With McGregor locked in a rivalry that has the wheels to go in to a trilogy if he wins the rematch, the top of the featherweight class is a talent stacked dragon currently missing it’s head.

For that reason we learned that former champion Jose Aldo and ex-lightweight boss Frankie Edgar would tie them up, also at UFC 200, for the interim belt at featherweight. Dana White then dropped the bombshell news that their rematch would not even make the co-main event slot. {watch this space for GSP news}. With Edgar having been at the top of the line of contenders for some time now and being thrown under the bus by the promotion on numerous occasions, it’s no surprise ‘The Answer’ is coming across as quite bitter in recent interviews.

Frankie Edgar

Edgar’s coach Mark Henry is the first interview we’ll look at today, as he recently told Balls.ie, yes that’s actually a site, that McGregor is little more than a spoilt 5 year old:

“It’s like a parent, you know, some are more lenient than others. It’s like a 5-year-old kid who wants to keep going on the ride at the park. Some parents let them keep going for another ride, and some say ‘Listen son, it’s time to go home’.

But you know Conor, he keeps whining and crying and he gets his way, no matter how bizarre things may seem. It’s ridiculous. I’m not upset with the UFC, it’s a great organisation, they’ve always treated Frankie well, but I wish they’d do it a little different.”

A. McGregor 1

“I’m not one to really look on Instagram or whatnot, but I looked on the comments on the picture Dana White posted of Conor, and you can see there about 80-90% of the people are upset. I think it’s the most I’ve ever seen people upset about one of the decisions the UFC made, because it’s just so blatant.

My question is, my biggest question is, why are you so afraid? Why do you have to clutch onto this 45 pound belt to grim death? Like if you’re as great as you say you are, go fight Nate, go fight Dos Anjos, when you want to come back down I’m sure the UFC will let you snap your fingers and fight for the title, so why do you need to hold this title so bad?”

It’s certainly been frustrating for many mixed martial arts fans to learn that McGregor will remain at 170 pounds for now, but no one is more upset than Frankie Edgar. After defeating the top competition in dominant fashion in the featherweight division, he’s just about had enough of the Conor McGregor show…

From a quiet news week in the mixed martial arts community, to three days of madness. The headline news has come out of nowhere on this non-event week, as the promotion announced a number of huge fights, the biggest being the UFC 200 main event. Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz will rematch their UFC 196 welterweight showdown, staying at 170 pounds, in the main event of the July 9 milestone pay-per-view card. Also announced, and at first thought to be the co-main event, was the interim featherweight title bout.

Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar will duke it out for the junior strap, but UFC president Dana White later said this was not the co-main for UFC 200, and that exact fight is yet to be announced. So the speculation on the (likely) title fight that will fill the second place spot at the landmark PPV will continue, and overnight we’ve seen many social media reactions to the announcements so far for July 9. UFC 200 got it’s main event verified and announced last night (Wednesday March 30, 2016) as we learned tht Conor McGregor would be granted his rematch request with Nate Diaz. Of course we’d all known this for at least a week thanks to Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com, but you know how the promotion likes to break their own news, especially when it comes to huge PPV cards like UFC 200.

So the not surprising main event announcement was met with the revelation that Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo would face off in a rematch of their UFC 156 featherweight title fight. Once again the bout will be a five round championship fight, but this time around it’s for the interim strap. As the news of their fight was announced just moments before the UFC 200 main event, many of us assumed it would be the co-main event of the evening.

Well, according to UFC president Dana White via The Star Phoenix, the second fiddle slot for the July 9 PPV is yet to be revealed:

Wow, it looks like this huge week of breaking news for the UFC is by no means over yet. Following the tradition of pay-per-view cards, aside from the fact a non-title welterweight bout is the main event, you can guess that a title fight will be targeted for the co-main event slot. But who will it be?
