Former longtime UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo made headlines earlier this week when he told media in Brazil that he had a spy in Frankie Edgar’s training room prior to their UFC 200 (July 9, 2016) interim title rematch. Aldo had said that his spy gave him secret information regarding Edgar’s game plan, and also that it wasn’t the first time he had used the tactic.

Now, however, “Scarface” is going back on his comments. Taking to his official Instagram account, Aldo wrote that it was all just a joke and that he was simply taking a ‘jab’ at bitter rival and reigning 145-pound titleholder Conor McGregor as McGregor made similar comments prior to his clash with Aldo at December 2015’s UFC 194:

Guys now I’ve become invincible… Nobody can beat me and my spies… Sometimes we aren’t taken seriously, and other times we joke around and get taken too seriously, so… let’s clarify I’ve always fought fair. I got to the top through a lot of hard work- both mine and my team’s. I am a principled person and fighter. My team is renowned for its development of tough, technical fighters but also for our collective character, and that’s what we’ll continue to be known for. I’d never do anything that goes against our principles. I fight clean, I fight fair, and I fight tough. When I talked about having spies in Edgar’s camp, it was a reference to a comment Macgregor made before our fight. It was just a jab. Everyone knows you can’t change up your entire strategy on fight week- of course Frankie’s strategy was going to be everything that worked for him in our first fight- it was a no-brainer that he would try the same things. As to spies in camp, relax people…my spies are just in your heads. I’m ready for anyone, no spies required.”

Aldo will now likely go on to rematch McGregor in a unification bout for the ages. In fact, the Brazilian recently said that the fight is being rumored for the UFC’s debut in New York at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016 at the historic Madison Square Garden.

Frankie Edgar: ‘You Can’t Write’ Better Story Than Me vs. McGregor At MSG

Surging featherweight contender and former lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar will finally get his chance to avenge his loss to Jose Aldo at July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas, Nevada. Surging featherweight contender and former lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar will finally get his chance to avenge his loss to Jose Aldo at July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas, Nevada. The two met back in 2013 for Aldo’s then-held 145-pound title in a close fought five round affair that Aldo came out of the victor.

This time, an interim title will be on the line, as Aldo surrendered the strap in brutal fashion to Conor McGregor last December. McGregor then decided to move up in weight and challenge Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in a bout where he was submitted in the second round.

McGregor will now look to avenge that loss at August 20’s UFC 202, putting the featherweight division on hold once again.

Edgar, however, is simply focused on the gold, and he plans to beat Aldo before hopefully facing off with McGregor for the undisputed title at November 12’s UFC 205 in New York:

“You can’t write something better than that,” Edgar said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “Why wouldn’t Conor want to fight at MSG? There’s definitely a big Irish contingency in New York and it could be possibly biggest fight UFC history.”

Of course this potentially massive fight would require McGregor to drop back down to featherweight, something he has yet to do since capturing the title. Edgar for one isn’t sure if the Irishman will ever defend his crown:

“At ’45, he has everything to lose,” Edgar said. “At ’70 he has nothing to lose, even though Nate is a ’55 pounder and they decided not to cut weight, so they can market going up two weight classes which is ridiculous since he’s a 55 pounder … at ’45, if he loses, he has nothing. He has a hard time making the weight. If he goes to 55 he’s not going to be in the title talks for awhile.”

As far as how Aldo will rebound from his devastating loss to the “Notorious” one, Edgar says that we won’t know until “Scarface” shows up to the Octagon:

“To be so dominant for this long, and then to lose like that, Conor is worst guy to lose to in that fashion,” Edgar said. “He already let the world know before and he let the world know after. He digs better than anybody. Some guys get through it and some guys don’t. He may say this or say that in the leadup for the fight, but even he won’t know until he steps into the Octagon.”

Despite being shockingly knocked out by Conor McGregor at last December’s UFC 194, former champion Jose Aldo will be always be remembered for putting together one of the very best title runs in not only promotional history, but sport history as well.

Despite his illustrious reign, however, Aldo has been criticized for his performances inside of the Octagon, as some feel as if he had repeatedly coasted to decision victories rather than shooting for the finish like he had done so many times prior to joining the UFC.

Back in his WEC days, for example, “Scarface” was a killer inside of the cage. Now looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss, Aldo claims that he has once again found that fire:

“That hunger, everything I felt in the WEC days, is all back, and I want to do it again,” Aldo told MMAjunkie.

Aldo will get his chance to rebound in the co-main event of July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 card from Las Vegas, Nevada. The former champion will rematch ex-lightweight boss Frankie “The Answer” Edgar with the interim 145-pound strap hanging in the balance.

When the two previously met at UFC 156, Aldo walked away with a decision victory, although Edgar did have some success. Since then, “The Answer” has gone on a tear, winning five-straight bouts with three of those victories coming by way of finish.

Aldo then gave his assessment on the upcoming bout, praising Edgar’s wrestling skills, but warning the New Jersey native not to stand with him:

“(Wrestling is) his strongpoint,” Aldo said. “That’s his strength, and it’s what he’s going to try to do. There’s no way. If he stands with me, he’s going to go down.

“In my mind, I still haven’t lost the belt. Obviously, this is another step, and by beating Frankie Edgar I’ll get the belt back.”

Will the Brazilian be able to get back to his winning ways this summer, or have we seen the last of Aldo’s dominance?

Coach: ‘Fraud’ Conor McGregor Needs To Let Go Of ‘Binkie’

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar will finally receive another shot at a featherweight title in the co-main event of July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas, Nevada. However, it won’t be the undisputed title that he and his team has been gunning for, as reigning champion Conor McGregor has put the division

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar will finally receive another shot at a featherweight title in the co-main event of July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

However, it won’t be the undisputed title that he and his team has been gunning for, as reigning champion Conor McGregor has put the division on hold with his quest for success at heavier weight classes.

Instead, Edgar will rematch ex-champion Jose Aldo for the interim 145-pound strap.

Edgar’s boxing coach, Mark Henry, recently spoke on the situation, comparing McGregor to his young daughter, and insinuating that the Irishman needs to let go of his title:

“Everybody keeps stoking up Conor so much, but Frankie is also trying to go for his second belt, too, and this guy- the thing with my daughter growing up, she was a great kid, but she wanted the baba and the binkie and the blankie (and) she was scared,” Henry told MMAjunkie Radio. “She just wouldn’t get rid of it and held on tight to that. And I think Conor needs to let go of that baba and the binkie and just let go of the 145-pound title.”

McGregor is indeed coming off of a disappointing loss to Nate Diaz at last March’s UFC 196 in a welterweight bout, but he’s also currently riding a seven-fight win streak at featherweight which was capped off by a stunning 13 second knockout over Aldo last December.

While his rise to fame was monumental to say the least, he was also heavily criticized on his way to capturing a world title.

Many felt as if McGregor, a powerful knockout artist, was handed opponents that fit right into his style, having seemingly avoided the division’s best wrestlers on his emphatic rise.

Henry agrees with this theory:

“I don’t know if Conor’s taken that route. In the military, I think it would be a good job for Conor (clearing) landmines. Somehow he missed (Darren) Elkins, somehow he missed (Clay) Guida, somehow he missed (Dennis) Bermudez, somehow he missed (Ricardo) Lamas, somehow he missed (Chad) Mendes with a full camp. Somehow he missed Frankie.”

“Fraud. That’s been his path. Frankie’s gone a different path.”

If Edgar can get passed Aldo in July, McGregor may have no choice but to finally clash with “The Answer”.

How would you see that fight playing out?

In the midst of the chaos surrounding July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 from Las Vegas, and it’s former headliner Conor McGregor, both fighters and fans have seemed to have mixed feelings on whose side to take: McGregor’s, or the UFC’s.

Essentially, the Irishman was pulled from his scheduled rematch with Nate Diaz after he refused to fly to Vegas from Iceland to fully adhere to the UFC’s promotional requirements.

The “Notorious” one said that after suffering his first Octagon loss to Diaz last March that he needed to get back into the gym and back to what truly got him to where he is today, a statement that some fighters have admitted to understanding.

One fighter who clearly isn’t on McGregor’s side, however, is ex-featherweight champion and bitter McGregor rival Jose Aldo.

The two men infamously met at last December’s UFC 194 after an extensive, drawn out build up. In the end, McGregor shocked the world, knocking Aldo unconscious in just 13 seconds.

Recently speaking on the situation, “Scarface” put McGregor on blast, calling the Irishman ‘weak’ after the fiasco:

“That proves how weak he is,” Aldo told ESPN. “I don’t see him as an athlete, I don’t respect him. In my opinion, he’s weaker than everything he always said.”

Aldo is currently slated to face off with former lightweight kingpin Frankie Edgar in the co-main event of UFC 200 for the interim 145-pound strap.

Will Aldo get the better of Edgar again and finally secure his highly sought upon rematch with McGregor sometime towards the end of the year?
