Former undisputed UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo has reportedly reached an agreement with the organization to cut short his contract with one fight remaining – retiring from professional mixed martial arts with immediate effect.

Aldo, 36, as per an initial report from Combate reporters, Raphael Marinho, and Zeca Acevedo, has reached an agreement with the UFC to walk away from the promotion despite retaining a sole fight on his contract, with the view to pursue other combat sports and retire from professional mixed martial arts.

The Manaus native reportedly sought his release from the organization despite retaining a single fight on his deal. And the UFC are said to have accepted the Brazilian icon’s request.

Speculation began to mount regarding a potential retirement from the sport for Jose Aldo, or a departure from the organization at the least, after TSN reporter, Aaron Bronsteter noted how the former featherweight champion was removed from the fans rankings pool this Sunday afternoon.

“Jose Aldo has been removed from the UFC fans ranking pool,” Aaron Bronsteter tweeted. “The most recent news on Aldo was that his coach felt he should retire, but thought he may want to fight out his contract with one last fight in Rio at UFC 283.”

Boasting a professional record of 31-8, Aldo, a former WEC featherweight champion to boot, most recently featured on the main card of UFC 278 back in August, suffering a unanimous decision loss to fellow bantamweight contender, Merab Dvalishvili, in a pivotal matchup.

The inaugural UFC featherweight champion, Aldo who also competed for bantamweight gold back in 2020, chalked up an impressive seven successful title defenses before suffering a knockout loss to Conor McGregor in December 2015.

Jose Aldo backs himself over Anderson Silva as the greatest Brazilian in history & reveals his GOAT

Jose Aldo, Anderson Silva

Jose Aldo put himself over the likes of Anderson Silva and Amanda Nunes as the greatest Brazilian mixed martial artist in history.

The former UFC featherweight champion enjoyed one of the most successful careers ever, spanning a period of dominance between 2006 and 2015. He went undefeated for nearly a decade until the former two-division champion Conor McGregor dethroned him by setting the record for the fastest title fight finish in just 13 seconds.

Jose Aldo believes he’s the best Brazilian MMA fighter ever

In an appearance on the show Cara a Tapa, Aldo made his case for being the greatest fighter to come from Brazil.

“That´s easy, myself,” he said (ht Sherdog). “I won the title twice, dropped my weight, and I could very well get an opportunity to fight for the title again. I respect everyone’s history, but I’m the best. I took on a new challenge, I lowered my [weight class], I lined up everyone, I did it for the title, I lost, I recovered again and I was doing well until I stumbled again. I’m the [best Brazilian] in history.”

Fedor Emelianenko is Aldo’s GOAT

Fedor Emelianenko is widely regarded as one of the greatest combat sports athletes ever, and Aldo shares the same sentiment. The former Pride Fighting Championship king went on a nine-year win streak and continues to compete to this day as a top-ranked Bellator heavyweight contender.

Jose Aldo acknowledged the illustrious resumes of former UFC champions Demetrious Johnson and Georges St-Pierre, he placed Emelianenko above both.

“Of achievements like that, [there is] Demetrious Johnson, who is a [lighter] weight that nobody talks about because he is tiny. But Georges was also a big name,” Aldo said. “But for me,  [it’s] Fedor. For me, he’s one of the icons. When the guy stayed 10 years [undefeate]), I said: ‘Damn, I want to beat this guy’s record.’”

Do you agree that Jose Aldo is the greatest Brazilian?

Jose Aldo

Jose Aldo‘s head coach, Andre Pederneiras has officially denied claims that Jose Aldo intends to retire from MMA.

Aldo (31-8) fought at UFC 278 on Saturday, August 20th in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he lost a decision to Merab “The Machine” Dvalishvili (15-4). Dvalishvili courted strong controversy for his post-fight comments when he revealed that Aldo told him of his intentions to walk away from the sport following the fight. Speaking on Ariel Helwani‘s “The MMA Hour”, Dvalishvili said:

“When he was down and I (went) to shake his hand and tell him, ‘Thank you so much for the fight,’ and I go to respect him, he was down, and I tried to help him, and he was telling me, he said, ‘That means this is my last fight, because it was my last run to title. And then he said, ‘I guess I’m done.”

Andre Pederneiras comes out swinging; denies Jose Aldo retirement rumors

However, Pederneiras has come out and firmly refuted Dvalishvili’s comments. in an interview with “Ag Fight”, Pederneiras said:

“They’ve made a mini-documentary about me and Aldo, about our relationship and shedding some light on the times he lost. He would turn to me and say ‘I’m going to stop. I don’t want to do this anymore.’ If you only knew how many times an athlete loses and says they don’t want anything to do with MMA anymore. After a couple of days, they’re right back at it. I haven’t heard that from just Aldo.”

Pederneiras went further in emphasizing the situation, saying:

“This is what I always tell them ‘do what you want today, we’ll talk later.’ I’m sure nothing has changed. Unless he brings that up again in the coming weeks, which I don’t think he will. Sometimes it’s just anger. It’s normal to say things. I want to see the champions who are in this life and are able to remain in the top 5 like Aldo. Most guys in Aldo’s age, they retire after conquering what Aldo has conquered. Aldo is still winning. He’s top 2 or top 3 now.”

Not only has Pederneiras vigorously denied any talk of retirement, but he even has his eyes firmly set on his star pupil’s ideal return date: UFC Rio de Janeiro on January 21st, 2023. Pederneiras said that that would be more than enough time for Aldo to get ready:

“We’re in August and the card is in January. That’s time enough to get ready. We have to talk to the UFC, see what they think. It’s a lot to consider.”

Rumors have been rife on social media of setting up a “legends fight” between Jose Aldo and fellow veteran Dominick “The Dominator” Cruz, himself coming off a loss, albeit in far more violent fashion to a man that Aldo actually beat; rising title contender Marlon “Chito” Vera. Would you like to see Aldo take on Cruz early next year?

One thing certainly appears to be the case for Jose Aldo: All roads lead home to Rio.
