Mark Hominick Doesn’t Necessarily Expect Striking War With Jose Aldo

With all the understandable UFC 129 hoopla surrounding what could be Randy “The Natural” Couture’s last fight ever (cue single tear), and of course the main event tilt between GSP and Jake Shields, this Saturday’s featherweight bout between champion Jose Aldo and Mark Hominick has gotten lost in the shuffle a little bit no? Mark-Hominick

This may also have something to do with the fact that too many ‘UFC only’ fans have never seen  Aldo fight, which could be a rant for another day.

If you have seen Aldo throw down, then you know that the guy is a serious, serious badass, who is one of the sport’s more entertaining finishers. As for Hominick? Well, he isn’t nicknamed “The Machine” because he moonlights as a mechanic; the guy has reedonkously good, technical stand-up, amazing conditioning, and has also been known to floor an opponent or two with his fists. In other words, their title fight will be an epic, striking war right? Not necessarily says Mr. Hominick. (Thanks to MMA Weekly for the quote).

“We’ve got to look at it, Jose’s a world champion in jiu-jitsu, so if we’re treating this like a kickboxing fight, we’re in the wrong sport. We’re ready everywhere,” Hominick commented…“Everybody’s talking about the stand-up just because that’s where we’ve won a lot of our fights. You wouldn’t be surprised to see either of us shooting for a takedown, and mixing it up. This is MMA and it’s for the world title. You have to be ready for everything.”

Yes, this is true, but either way we’re hoping to be out of our minds with excitement during the tilt. To bet on the bout, or any others at UFC 129, head here.

Mark Hominick was not one of those fighters that seemed destined for greatness from the beginning. After nine fights in his pro MMA career, he was a fairly pedestrian 5-4, though most of those fights took place in Canada’s biggest promotion at the time. Hominick had debuted in the sport at age 19 and grew up in it, yet for most of his career, he had never truly been thought of as a guy who might one day be considered the best featherweight in the world.

Yet in just over a week, he’ll have the opportunity to unseat the universally regarded world No. 1 Jose Aldo and capture the championship in the co-main event of UFC 129.

The match will be just the beginning of a whirlwind stretch for the 28-year-old. He’ll be fighting in front of 55,000 fans in Toronto, just two hours away from the Ontario city in which he grew up. He’ll have the chance to pull off what might be the title upset of the year. And to cap it all off, he and his wife are expecting their first child, a daughter, within a week of the event.

Jon Jones wears the UFC light heavyweight belt at UFC 128.The last time I ranked the Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in MMA, I heard from a lot of readers who thought it was too early to have Jon Jones on the list.

No one is going to say that now.

After Jones smashed “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128, the question isn’t whether Jones is one of the sport’s Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters — everyone agrees that he is. Now the question is just how high Jones belongs on the pound-for-pound list.

I think Jones is doing things we haven’t seen before, and dominating his opponents in ways that few fighters can equal, and so I have Jones among the truly elite on my latest list, which is below.
