Jose Aldo is backing his former rival, Conor McGregor, to recover from his recent leg break and return to the top of the sport.

‘Scarface’ and McGregor shared a bitter build-up to their 2015 featherweight title fight which was won by ‘Notorious’ in exemplary fashion.

Despite their past differences, Aldo says he couldn’t help but feel bad when McGregor suffered a horrific leg break in the first round of his third fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.

“First of all, I’m upset with the injury,” Aldo told Ag. Fight. “It’s quite hard, we work with our body, we try to keep it healthy because that way we can always be working.

Aldo believes the Irishman has what it takes to recover and return to the pinnacle of MMA.

“I think he can [get back to fighting at a high level]. I never doubt the champions, the mind and willpower of the champions,” Aldo said. “He has dominating before and was the lightweight and featherweight champion. It’s all up to him. If he wants to come back at a high level, he can do it.”

Aldo thinks McGregor was doing well in the fight before the unfortunate injury occurred.

“The fight was going well especially because Conor forgot [his promotional] side and tried to be the fighter and win until that leg situation happened,” Aldo said. “But, man, I think it’s up to him [to return]. If he wants to come back again, he will work hard, abdicate from certain things to get there, dedicate himself and go back to the winning path.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Aldo continues his bantamweight run this weekend when he takes on Pedro Munhoz in the UFC  265 co-main event.

A massive UFC bantamweight scrap between Jose Aldo and Pedro Munhoz is looking to be added to the UFC 265 card on August 7th, as first reported by Combate’s Ana Hissa and Raphael Marinho.

The UFC hasn’t formally announced the matchup just yet, but the initial discussions of the bout are sure to excite fans of the stacked bantamweight division.

Right now, the only fight confirmed for UFC 265 is the highly-anticipated women’s bantamweight title fight between Amanda Nunes and Julianna Pena. The promotion is also looking at booking the heavyweight title fight between champion Francis Ngannou and top contender Derrick Lewis for later this summer and could potentially add their rematch to the August pay-per-view.

Aldo has had an up-and-down run in the UFC’s bantamweight division since making the cut in weight following a long tenure at featherweight, which included seven title defenses as the champion. He has lost three of his four bouts at bantamweight including a controversial split-decision loss to Marlon Moraes, a fight in which many around the MMA community felt that Aldo won. Since then, he has got back in the win column with a dominant victory over Marlon Vera at UFC Vegas 17, calling out Dominick Cruz and T.J. Dillashaw following the fight.

For Munhoz, he’s looking to get back into title contention. After his Fight of the Night performance against former champion Cody Garbrandt at UFC 235, Munhoz went on to lose back-to-back fights before getting back on track with a win against Jimmie Rivera at UFC Vegas 20.

The matchup between Aldo and Munhoz would add to a series of big fights in the bantamweight division slated for this summer. Garbrandt and Rob Font are slated to compete in the main event at UFC Vegas 27 this Saturday, while Dillashaw and Cory Sandhagen will reportedly compete in a UFC Fight Night on July 24th.

This also doesn’t count out the impending rematch between current titleholder Aljamain Sterling and former champion Petr Yan. While the fight hasn’t been booked just yet, Sterling and Yan are expected to be the next bantamweight title fight after their controversial finish at UFC 259.

Aldo and Munhoz each have a chance to get back in the title picture with a win. Aldo has looked pretty impressive despite making a tough weight cut late in his career, while Munhoz is looking to get back to his winning ways.

Former UFC featherweight king turned bantamweight contender, Jose Aldo has defended the newly crowned 135lb champion, Aljamain Sterling, who picked up the belt in the most unusual way.

Sterling has faced a storm of criticism from Yan, other fighters, and fans alike. The first fighter in the promotion’s history to win a title due to a disqualification, Sterling has been called an ‘actor’ for how he responded to the fight-ending illegal knee. While some have come to his defense, Sterling remains the heel to most.

‘Funk Master’ has also faced criticism for his reluctance to rematch Yan who to many was on route to a successful first title defence before he threw the illegal strike in round four.

“This guy is getting rewarded with a rematch, which I get is a big fight. But, it is like, we can just break the rules and nothing is ever going to happen to us,” Sterling recently said. “So I can just jump the octagon and nothing is ever going to happen to me. I can just go and fight another corner or push him after the bell and nothing is ever going to happen. It’s like, I feel like when you have rules for a reason. You kinda have to enforce them, or otherwise let’s just run them up. I feel like his ass should have been suspended or something. Pay me some money for an illegal foul that might take years off of my career.”

Aldo told MMA Fighting, that despite what many may think, Sterling a “the legitimate champion.”

“I do consider him the champion,” Aldo said. “It wasn’t his fault. He didn’t throw the illegal strike or anything like that. Petr made a mistake and paid for his mistake. It’s more than fair, you can’t say [Sterling] is not the champion. It doesn’t matter if it’s by disqualification or not, rules are there to be followed. I do see him as the champion. If he felt [the knee] or not, only he can say, but I do see him as the legitimate champion.”

Do you agree with Jose Aldo? Is Aljamain Sterling a legitimate UFC champion?

Jose Aldo Calls For ‘Big Fight’ With Dominick Cruz

Aldo Cruz

Jose Aldo is open to a fight with Dominick Cruz.

Following his impressive unanimous decision win over Marlon Vera, Aldo was receptive to a fight with former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt after the latter called him out.

However, Garbrandt ended up getting booked to face Rob Font instead. Another target for Aldo was TJ Dillashaw only for him to get paired with Cory Sandhagen.

Now, Aldo is targeting a fight with Cruz in a matchup that many combat sports fans have wanted to see for ages.

“It’s a big fight to make, Dominick and me, because of our importance [in the sport],” Aldo told MMA Fighting. “We were both WEC champions and then came to the UFC as champions, so it’s a big fight to make.”

Aldo claims he has already asked the UFC for that fight as well and is just waiting for a response.

“[Garbrandt] asked for the fight and I agreed right away, but the UFC shot it down,” Aldo explained. “[Garbrandt] and I had already agreed, it was all set, and the UFC didn’t think it was a great fight, they wanted him to fight Rob Font.

“We ended the [Vera] fight last year and asked for Dillashaw and Garbrandt and now I have none. I’m on the dance floor without a dancing partner [laughs]. But we’ve been asking for Dominick Cruz for a while now and that’s a fight everybody asks for. We’re expecting to fight him. But I don’t know if it will happen, right?”

As for what he makes of Cruz, Aldo was nothing but complimentary of the former bantamweight champion who recently returned to the win column earlier this month against Casey Kenney.

“He’s a great fighter, has always had great performances,” Aldo added. “If it wasn’t for his injuries he would still be competing for titles at the top. Injuries have been an issue for him, he hasn’t been in the UFC what we were used to seeing from Dominick Cruz.

“I’ll always see myself as a title contender, there’s no escape. Becoming the champion is all I think since the moment I moved down to this division. I’m ranked No. 5 now and I want to fight more often. You can be sure that sooner or later we’ll grab that belt.”
