Jose Aldo is not only targeting TJ Dillashaw.

Aldo returned to the win column as well as earned his first victory at bantamweight when he outpointed Marlon Vera over three rounds in the UFC Vegas 17 co-headliner last night.

Following the win, Aldo called for a fight with the former bantamweight champion in Dillashaw who will be eligible to return to action starting next month.

Aldo later clarified his callout was nothing personal either as he believes it’s a fight that simply makes sense for everyone.

However, should the UFC decide on a different opponent for Dillashaw, Aldo has three other names in mind.

“I think the category has new names coming up,” Aldo told AG Fight (via BJ Penn). “There’s TJ Dillashaw, Dominick Cruz, Frankie Edgar, who has a fight with Cory Sandhagen.

“If it isn’t (Dillashaw), it could be Dominick too, it could be anyone. We have to be busy, to draw attention to our category. Or even (Henry) Cejudo himself, if he comes back, we are willing to make this fight.”

The name that stands out in particular is Cruz — even if he is slated to face Casey Kenney at UFC 259 on March 6.

Cruz was the bantamweight champion at WEC as well as the UFC at the same time Aldo was featherweight champion in those organizations.

It led to many fans wanting to see a fight between the pair at some point. While both fighters are seemingly past their prime, it would still be a fascinating matchup even in 2021.

Then again, so would the other options Aldo mentioned other than Edgar who he has already defeated twice, albeit at featherweight.

Jose Aldo has explained why he is gunning for a fight with former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw after picking up his first win in the division by beating Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera at UFC Vegas 17 on Saturday night.

Aldo has suffered successive defeats to Marlon Moraes and Petr Yan since dropping down to 135lbs. Last night he went in search of his first bantamweight win against #15 ranked contender Vera who was coming off one of the biggest wins of his career over Sean O’Malley at UFC 252.

After an even first two rounds, Aldo was able to dominate the final stanza with his wrestling, riding the back of his opponent for the entire five minutes before being awarded 29/28 scorecards by all three judges.

Post-fight he called out TJ Dillashaw who is set to return from a two-year drug ban early next year. Speaking to media afterward ‘The King of Rio’ explained why he wants to take on Dillashaw next, he said.

“I don’t have anything personally with T.J. I just want to make a great fight for the fans. I think T.J. is a great former champion. I think this fight makes sense for everybody.”

Aldo was happy to relish the moment rather than think too much about what may come next.

“I’m so happy for today,” Aldo said. “I think I needed to give a great show for the fans and the win, because sometimes, I’ve made a great show but I’ve lost.”

“Of course, I have a lot of pressure on top of my shoulders. But I’m still training hard and I still want to fight and I want to win,” Aldo added. “Last year, (I) was here in the same time in December, but I lost (to) Marlon (Moraes). I’m here this year and I won. I’m here.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Former Featherweight champion Jose Aldo has his eyes set on the former Bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw for his first fight of 2021.

Speaking through a translator in his post fight interview Aldo suggested the matchup following Dillashaw’s return from suspension.

“As far as the next fight, It would be Dillashaw, you’ve been talking about Dillashaw allot so hey Dana, make it happen,” Aldo said.

Dillashaw is set to return in February following a two-year suspension stemming from a failed drug test.

Dillashaw has suggested fighting for a title in his return bout, however, with Aldo’s latest victory it will likely place him in the top five.

After a controversial debut in the Bantamweight division, Aldo fought Petr Yan for the vacant Bantamweight title. After losing this fight Aldo made his return at UFC Vegas 17 against the streaking Marlon “Chito” Vera.

After two extremely close rounds, Aldo changed his style and approached the third with a grappling heavy strategy. This proved to be the right move and allowed Aldo to control Vera for the majority of the round and ultimately edge him out on the scorecards.

Dillashaw’s last bout was a failed attempt at the Flyweight title that saw him defeated by Henry Cejudo via KO.

Currently, the UFC haven’t shared any interest in booking the potential bout between the pair, however, we will likely know towards the beginning on 2021 when Dillashaw prepares to make his return.
