Jussier Formiga believes his fight with Joseph Benavidez tomorrow night (Sat. June 29, 2019) should’ve been for an interim 125-pound title.

The division is currently run by Henry Cejudo, who holds the UFC’s flyweight and bantamweight titles at the moment. Unfortunately, “Triple C” will sit out for the rest of 2019 with a shoulder injury. In the meantime, challengers for both the 125 and 135-pound weight classes must emerge.

Speaking to MMA Junkie recently, Formiga explained that he’s willing to wait on a title shot against Cejudo with a win over Benavidez tomorrow night. Formiga not only wants to face the champion of two weight classes, but avenge the split decision loss he suffered to Cejudo back in 2015:

“I’m ready to wait,” Formiga said. “Cejudo is the guy that I was aiming for two reasons. One, he’s the champion, the champion of two divisions, and my division now. And two, because he beat me in the past. I’m on a quest to beat everybody who beat me. Benavidez is now because he’s the next one, and then Cejudo is next.”

With a win over Benavidez, Formiga remains firm that his next fight would have to be for UFC gold. Even if it means implementing an interim 125-pound title while the division waits for Cejudo’s return:

“Which division, which belt is he going to defend first?” Formiga said. “Hopefully it’s a 125er, but if not and he defends at 135, maybe the UFC can put an interim belt for me to go against somebody else so I can have a title shot. My next fight will be a title shot for sure.”

Do you think Benavidez vs. Formiga should be for an interim championship?

Henry Cejudo will likely be out-of-action for the rest of 2019.

“Triple C” captured the UFC bantamweight title by defeating Marlon Moraes earlier this month. With the win, he became the first fighter in UFC history to hold two titles simultaneously, while also being a former Olympic Gold medalist. While he sits out, the title picture at flyweight and bantamweight can develop.

One man who Cejudo could be returning to is former foe Joseph Benavidez. Benavidez will fight Jussier Formiga in the co-main event of UFC Minneapolis this weekend. The winner could very well face Cejudo for the title next. Cejudo and Benavidez are former opponents. The pair coached opposite one another on “The Ultimate Fighter Season 24” (TUF 24).

They fought at the TUF 24 Finale in December of 2016. Benavidez took home a controversial split decision over Cejudo, marking the second-ever defeat on the former Olympian’s mixed martial arts (MMA) record. Speaking to MMA Fighting, Benavidez said he believes he can get the job done against Cejudo again, but admits he’d be naive to believe Cejudo hasn’t improved since their first fight:

“I beat him and that’s how I’m always looking at him,” Benavidez said. “I’m better than him, I beat him, I pushed a pace on him and landed clean this clean that. I look at that so it’s motivating to see him do everything he can because that’s what I know of him.

“Obviously, he’s improved and his confidence has skyrocketed, and that’s a huge thing, so I’d be naive to think that he’s not different, that he hasn’t changed. But for me, he’s still the guy that I coached against in The Ultimate Fighter and my team beat his, and I beat him in the finale, and that’s how I look at him right now.

“He just happens to be doing some others things too, which is great and motivating within itself, but me personally, as a competitor, that’s how I look at him, as somebody I already beat, but knowing and not being naive to his improvements and everything he’s done.”

Do you think Benavidez should be Cejudo’s next challenger for the 125-pound title?

Joseph Benavidez knows what he wants, and that’s a title shot, which is exactly what he has been calling for as of late.

Benavidez is expected to face Jussier Formiga in a rematch at UFC Minneapolis. Many would consider this as a No. 1-contender’s fight in the UFC flyweight division, which is currently led by champion Henry Cejudo. Thus, while doing a recent interview, the title contender made it known that he thinks if he beats Formiga then he should get the next crack at “Triple C”:

“He fought at 135 last, I think it would make sense to fight at 125 again. I’m the only person of the contenders that he could fight. I’m the only one with history with him. I have a win over him so you figure he’d want to do that, the company would want to do that.”

“This is a big fight for the division, and I think the rightful contender comes out of this fight, the winner,” Benavidez told MMA Junkie. “At the end of the day, I have a tough fight in front of me and a guy (Formiga) who actually lost a split decision to Cejudo in a close fight and has improved since, so his two best contenders are at flyweight.”

Benavidez already holds a win over “The King Of Cringe” as he beat him via controversial split decision in 2016. If the UFC did go in this direction, then Benavidez would be waiting a while as Cejudo just underwent shoulder surgery and is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year.
