Josh Burkman announced his retirement from MMA on Friday night in West Valley City, Utah, a suburb of Burkman’s hometown of Salt Lake City at LFA 66. He suffered a split decision loss to William Macario (10-4).

After over 16 years in MMA competition, including 19 UFC fights, Burkman walked away from the sport. Burkman finishes with a career record of 28-18 after starting back in 2003 with notable victories over Gerald Harris, Jon Fitch, and K.J. Noons.

In the main event, featherweight Tyler Diamond (10-1) won his LFA debut, handing Jon Neal (10-1) his first professional loss in an exciting battle. Also on the show, featherweight Andrew Tenneson (8-1) submitted Westin Wilson (7-4) with a rare gogoplata submission.

LFA 66 Results

Main Event – Featherweight Fight – Tyler Diamond (10-1) defeated Jon Neal (10-1) via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

Co-Main Event – 175 Pound Catchweight Fight – William Macario (10-4) defeated Josh Burkman (28-18, 1 NC) via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

Featherweight Fight – Andrew Tenneson (8-1) submitted Westin Wilson (7-4) with a gogoplata at 4:29 in round one.

Light Heavyweight Fight – Emilio Trevino (5-0) defeated Joe Rodriguez (8-6) via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

Lightweight Fight – Fabio Serrao (10-6) defeated Bobby King (6-3) via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

Flyweight Fight –  Lisa Mauldin (3-1) defeated Kaytlin Neil (4-4) via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28).

Bantamweight Fight – Hunter Azure (6-0) defeated L.J. Schulz (6-5, 1 NC) via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Tonight’s (Sat., July 29, 2017) UFC 214 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California is obviously anticipated for its three elite title fights – most namely the Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones main event – but the Fight Pass-aired preliminary card immediately made it clear that the card is packed with entertaining fighters from top to bottom.

That was just the case when well-rounded lightweight Drew Dober returned from a lengthy layoff due to injury to pick up by far the biggest win of his UFC career versus longtime MMA veteran Josh Burkman in the first fight of the stacked event. After a back-and-forth opening few minutes where Dober landed some stiff low kicks and Burkman scored with his own body kicks, it became clear that Dober was the stronger fighter physically when he controlled the clinch.

That became even more apparent, however, when he threw an absolutely pinpoint left hook just around the guard of Burkman, landing the shot right on the chin to immediately knock out “The People’s Warrior” and get UFC 214 started with a big bang. UFC Fight Night 96 took place on October 1st, 2016 from the Moda Center in Portland, Ore. The UFC Fight Pass prelims began at 7:15 p.m. ET with four bouts while the FOX Sports 2 prelims aired at p.m. ET with four bouts. The main card began at 11 p.m. ET on FS1 with four bouts.

This event was headlined by a bantamweight bout between John Lineker and former two-time UFC Flyweight Title challenger and TUF Team Bisping vs. Team Miller bantamweight winner John Dodson. Will Brooks vs. Alex Oliveira in a lightweight showdown was the co-main event. Rounding out the main card was Brandon Moreno vs. Louis Smolka and Josh Burkman vs. Zak Ottow.
