Josh Burkman’s (28-14, 1 NC) role at UFC Fight Night 96 was to welcome Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) newcomer Zak Ottow (14-3). Since returning to the UFC, Burkman has only earned one victory in five fights.

Burkman’s misfortune continued after falling short to “The Barbarian.”

“The People’s Warrior” landed a left hook that pierced through Ottow’s guard. “The Barbarian” landed a leg kick and a left hand shortly after. Burkman got kicked below the belt and time was called. Time resumed and “The People’s Warrior” connected with a straight right to the body. A counter right hand found the mark for Ottow. He landed another right hand and followed it up with a short elbow.

At the start of the second stanza, Burkman moved forward but was countered with a right hand. A hard leg kick connected for “The People’s Warrior.” A spinning back kick was thrown by Burkman. Ottow threw a combination, but got popped with a counter left hook. The round ended and it was more competitive than the opening frame.

Ottow blocked Burkman’s high kick early in the final frame. He went for a takedown, but Burkmam threatened with a head lock. Ottow ditched the takedown attempt. Some leg kicks from Ottow looked to take its toll on his opponent. Burkman slammed Ottow to the canvas. “The Barbarian” was able to stand up unscathed. Ottow looked close to getting a choke near the end of the fight.

The score totals were read and Ottow earned a split decision victory.

Final Result: Zak Ottow def. Josh Burkman via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Lightweights Josh Burkman and Paul Felder kicked off the main card of tonight’s (Sun., May 29, 2016) UFC Fight Night 88 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Burkman was looking to build a win streak after perhaps saving his career with a win over K.J. Noons in his lightweight debut after fighting most of his career at welterweight, while Felder was looking for one of his own after submitting Daron Cruickshank at UFC Fight Night 81 in January.

The fight started with Burkman using kicks to feel his range. Felder stayed aggressive and landed a hard body kick and the two clashed in a brief exchange. Burkman landed to the body twice, staying just out of the way of Felder’s pressure. “The Irish Dragon” threw a jumping front kick, but Burkman blocked it and unloaded a good combo. Felder went back to the jumping kick and Burkman countered with big punches before it became a wild firefight with Burkman getting the better of it.

Burkman found pause with a takedown, controlling the action from side control momentarily before the two got back to their feet. A brief Burkman takedown lead to him riding out a good opening round in the clinch on the fence.

The second round featured a sharp leg kick from Felder, who kept pressuring Burkman with low kicks. Burkman landed a solid combo, only to eat a knee to the body and return fire with a right hook. Felder landed a kick to the body off a Burkman spinning backfist attempt, and “The Irish Dragon” landed some elbows in the clinch. Two heavy punches landed from Felder. He followed with a heavy combination that was thwarted by another Burkman clinch. Felder reversed position and took Burkman’s back in a good bounceback round for him.

The third round saw more heavy pressure from Felder with a body kick followed by a leg kick. Felder landed a huge spinning back kick to Burkman’s body that actually lifted him off the ground and onto the mat briefly. Burkman slowed and Felder landed more kicks. Slowly losing the stand-up, Burkman threw a two-punch combo and went for a takedown he eventually got, but Felder got right back up. A back and forth clinch where Felder cut Burkman with some solid elbows went until the last 30 seconds or so, and Burkman got a vital late takedown after a restart.

In the end, Felder took home a unanimous decision by scoring 29-28 on all three judges’ scorecards on the heels of his constant forward momentum.

Fight Night 74 Highlights/Results: Oliveira Tears His Esophagus, Perez Retires, Cote & Burkman Go to War + More

Fight Night 74 was a night full of surprises, and that’s not just referring to the fact that seven underdogs came out victorious on Sunday night, or the fact that the highly-anticipated main event ended before it ever got started. No, the biggest shock of the night came in the form of 26-year old Frankie Perez, who followed up an impressive (if not necessarily surprising) KO of Sam Stout by retiring in the ring. Check out the video above.

“I train with the best team on the planet” said Perez, “I have the utmost confidence to beat anybody in this division. (But) me being 26, this is my first win in the UFC and my last. I’m done after this. I’ve brought my dreams to come true and I’m on to the next chapter in my life. I’m done putting my family and my body through all this.”

It was an incredibly honorable moment for Perez, which could only mean that one of the UFC’s analysts for the evening, Michael Bisping, could only lob insults aimed Perez’s “cajones” when discussing it with Dominick Cruz in the studio afterward. Thankfully, Cruz set the record straight by both lauding Perez’s discipline and shitting on Bisping’s gatekeeper status/lack of two functional eyes.

Speaking of surprises, Fight Night 74′s main event ended not with a surprise finish or controversial decision, but with an injury that I have legitimately never seen before. After failing to secure his first takedown, Charles Oliveira clutched his neck and surrendered almost instantly. He was then stretchered out of the arena, leading many of us to speculate that something very, very serious might have been wrong with Oliveira heading into the matchup. As it turns out, were were right: Oliveira had previously injured his neck in training, then tore his goddamn esophagus in the opening minute of the fight. “Do Bronx” explained what went wrong during today’s MMA Hour:

I injured my neck in training, but did physical therapy and thought everything was fine, but when I fell against the cage everything went numb, I couldn’t feel my body.”

Oliveira also stated his hopes for a rematch with Holloway, who rallied for a fight against Frankie Edgar during the evening’s post-fight press conference. To which I say, book that fight, UFC. Book that fight as quickly as you sons a bitches can.

Most of us could have predicted that Josh Burkman vs. Patrick Cote would’ve been a banger, but I’ll be damned if these two vets didn’t surpass all our expectations and then some. Cote’s legendary chin was put to the test early and often by Burkman, who himself had never been TKO’d until he ate a hellacious counter right from Cote in the third round. Some 20 or so follow-up punches later, Cote had scored his first TKO win since dropping to
