Having the chance to fight in the UFC is every MMA fighter’s dream, and many have been willing to endure all kinds of personal struggles and sacrifices in order to make it there.

However, the Octagon has a nasty habit of chewing fighters up and spitting them back out, and adjusting back to normal life afterwards can prove to be hard to deal with.

Suddenly out of the limelight, down on their luck, and with the knowledge that their best days in the sport were now behind them, some fighters were simply unable to cope, and that obviously brought out the worst in them.

In this article we’ll investigate 10 of the most dramatic cases of fighters whose lives spiraled completely out of control after leaving the UFC.

Terry Etim

Along with the likes of Michael Bisping, Liverpool’s Terry Etim was one of a small group of fighters who helped put UK MMA on the map in the UFC, compiling a respectable 6-5 record over a six-year period, though he’s most remembered for falling victim to an instant-classic wheel kick KO from Edson Barboza.

The UFC released Etim in early 2013 after a dip in form saw him lose three fights in a row, but he was still only 27-years-old and soon signed for Bellator, claiming a victory in his debut.

However, Etim then suffered an ACL injury, and for the next three years he simply vanished. No social media posts, no interviews, no fights.

Then, in February of 2017, almost exactly four years since his last UFC appearance, the now 31-year-old Etim suddenly burst back into the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

According to multiple witnessed, Etim jumped out of a car one afternoon in Liverpool city centre and deliberately ran into traffic, throwing himself into a series of stationary cars, and even a single-decker bus.

The blood-soaked Etim broke free from friends who were trying to stop him, but was eventually restrained and taken to hospital suffering from serious internal and facial injuries

Etim was released from hospital several weeks later and has once again vanished from the spotlight, with no explanation being offered for his alarming behavior.

Kaitlyn Grispi Defends Josh Grispi’s Abuse on Incredibly Depressing Episode of ‘Dr. Phil’ [VIDEO]

(Props: All New Dr. Phil via @thracian_books)

There are some things that will just wreck your confidence in humanity. Case in point: Kaitlyn Grispi’s appearance on Dr. Phil yesterday, in which she did all she could to justify the horrific physical abuse she (allegedly) received at the hands of her husband, WEC/UFC veteran Josh Grispi.

We already knew that Kaitlyn was walking back on most of the details that first came out following Josh Grispi’s arrest in August — including that salacious and horrifying bit about how Josh would sic his dog on her — but her Dr. Phil appearance is something else altogether. Kaitlyn spends most of the show denying Josh’s abuse, despite the photos of her ravaged face being shown on the broadcast (see the 1:42-2:09 mark of the video for the photos and her nonchalant reaction to them), and explaining that if Josh roughed her up, it was because she deserved it. Meanwhile, she calls her own mother a liar for trying to help, and Josh calls in from jail to say hi, though he can’t comment on any of the details of the case.

At the 3:25 mark, Dr. Phil reads the graphic, chilling death threats that Josh sent Kaitlyn via text message, which Kaitlyn doesn’t see as a big deal because hey, they both threatened to kill each other; it’s just what couples do sometimes. And at the 9:35 mark, Dr. Phil reads some actual quotes from Kaitlyn about why Josh beat her up. They include…

– “I wouldn’t shut up.”
– “There’s only so much a person can take.”
– “Do you know how many women in town have been hit by their husbands? Tons.”
– “I’m a mouthy woman; I don’t know when to shut up.”
– “He only hit me when I wouldn’t walk away.”

Jesus. Then, at 13:56, Dr. Phil drops the bombshell: “Next, we’re gonna talk about why Kaitlyn says her house is haunted, and that may explain Josh’s behavior.” The audience laughs at her.

Skip to the 16:52 mark to see one of the most bizarre segments in the history of daytime television, in which a battered wife takes us on a tour through her haunted house. When it’s over, Dr. Phil asks: “What does this have [to do] with you getting the hell beat out of you?” Kaitlyn doesn’t have an answer, and the crowd applauds. Eventually, she explains that the person who died in her house must have been having an effect on her husband, because he was doing strange things, and Josh would hit her when she brought it up.

“It’s funny to other people until you actually live it.” But it’s not funny. Kaitlyn Grispi is following the brainwashed battered wife playbook to the letter, and it’s completely depressing and horrible. Ugh. I could go on and on listing quotes from this show that infuriate me, but I don’t want to make myself any more angry than I already am. This sucks. Josh Grispi needs to be held accountable for what he did, and Kaitlyn Grispi needs to get her mind untangled by a professional, because she’s exhibiting the kind of Stockholm Syndrome that keeps women with their abusers until they die.

“Every Marriage Has Its Problems”: Despite Horrific Assault, Kaitlyn Grispi Is Standing by Her Man

(” do love him. I can get past that if he can get the help. I know it can get better, because I know who he is.” / Photo by Scott Eisen for The Enterprise)

Josh Grispi‘s pair of arrests for allegedly assaulting his wife Kaitlyn earlier this month was the most despicable story to float around the MMA bubble until War Machine stole the headlines a few days later. Kaitlyn Grispi claimed that Josh had physically abused her for the past two years, culminating in a brutal attack on August 4th in which Josh savagely beat Kaitlyn and sicced his pitbull on her. Middleboro police officer Richard Harvey called it “the worst case of domestic abuse I’ve ever seen.”

But in a somewhat depressing development, Kaitlyn Grispi has now come out publicly to downplay the incident, and says she’ll take her husband back if he gets help. (Keep in mind that the August 4th incident occurred while Josh was out on bail for his previous assault and battery arrest on Friday; Kaitlyn chose not to renew an emergency restraining order because she “thought Joshua would be better.” He wasn’t.) From a new report on WickedLocal/TheEnterprise:

Despite the documented abuse and her reported and visible injuries, [Grispi] said Monday that she loves her husband, who is being held without bail at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility. The two have been talking by telephone nearly every day while he is in prison, she said.

“My husband’s a great father and my kids miss him so much,” said Kaitlyn, 25, a mother of two children, ages 1 and 3, as she broke down crying. “It’s hard. My son’s birthday is tomorrow. It’s just rough.”

Standing on the porch of her Middleboro home Monday afternoon, Kaitlyn Grispi said her situation has been blown out of proportion in police and media reports.

“It’s sad because they’re making it out to be way crazier than what it was,” she said…

Standing on the porch of her Middleboro home Monday afternoon, Kaitlyn Grispi said her situation has been blown out of proportion in police and media reports.

“It’s sad because they’re making it out to be way crazier than what it was,” she said…

Monday afternoon, visible were a bruise on her upper left arm and two small puncture wounds on her legs. Two days earlier, she said, she got a spray tan “just so I can cover up.”

“I went to Walmart the other day and I was sitting there and I noticed everyone staring at me,” she said.

After agreeing to be photographed by an Enterprise photographer Monday, she briefly went inside her home, applied face makeup, and came outside again.

Kaitlyn – with big, blue eyes and long, dark hair – said her domestic situation has only made headlines because of her husband’s involvement with the UFC.

“It’s about his name with the UFC. It’s not Kaitlyn Grispi with my picture getting domestically abused,” she said. “I would like to see how many domestic abuse (cases) happen in Middleboro. How come they don’t get any of this (attention)?”

Kaitlyn believes her husband’s aggression may be a result of concussions he suffered during his fights.

“I told him today that he needs to be evaluated with a CAT scan to see what is going on up there,” she said...

She declined to discuss how much abuse she may have endured in the past, leading up to her husband’s recent arrests.

“Yes. What he did is wrong. That is wrong to put your hands on a girl, and I understand that and I know that,” she said…

At times, she defended her husband, saying he is “a good person.” She downplayed the accusations of his abuse.

“Behind closed doors, everyone has a fight,” Kaitlyn said. “Maybe not that far, but everyone’s gonna fight. Every marriage has its problems. Does that mean you give up on it?”

She said she won’t go back to her husband if he doesn’t get help. “I need to actually see the change in order to make that decision,” she said.

Standing near Kaitlyn, Joshua Grispi’s brother, Jesse Skeffington of Plympton, said there is “a lot of confusion in the family” about the charges lodged against his brother.

“No one can picture Joshua doing this. The family can’t picture him doing this,” Skeffington, 31, said. “I can’t picture the scene that was painted, and obviously the family loves her.”

Skeffington said he has been visiting Kaitlyn regularly to check up on her. Her two children were placed in the custody of Kaitlyn’s parents after his brother’s arrest.

Kaitlyn is concerned about her dog, Buddy, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier that was taken into custody by Middleboro Animal Control last week. Buddy is currently under a 10-day quarantine to observe the dog for signs of rabies, and may have to be euthanized.

“I want my dog back,” said Kaitlyn, who told police last week that her husband would often choke the dog unconscious and that he did so during the Aug. 4 incident.

Kaitlyn said she has met with a woman who counsels domestic violence victims. Wearing a silver bracelet bearing a Cross, she said she is looking to God to get her through everything.

When asked why she’d consider staying with her husband, a man accused of physically harming her repeatedly, Kaitlyn replied: love.

“I love him,” she said. “I do love him. I can get past that if he can get the help. I know it can get better, because I know who he is.”

********

Your reaction to this story will inevitably be influenced by your previous experience — or lack of experience — as a victim of domestic abuse. Like most men, I can’t relate to it personally. And while I’ve never been the kind of person to blame victims of domestic violence for the atrocities inflicted upon them, I’ve certainly been guilty of judging them. “What self-respecting woman would stay with a man who beat her?,” I think. “What kind of person would publicly defend her own horrific assault? Doesn’t she know what kind of example she’s setting for her children?

It’s easy for someone completely removed from Kaitlyn’s situation to sit back and throw stones. Sure, maybe she’s not thinking logically, and maybe she needs more help than even she realizes. Maybe there are psychological reasons why she can tolerate abuse in the context of “love.” Writing off her assault by saying “Every marriage has its problems” is cringe-worthy, but let’s not lose sympathy for Kaitlyn Grispi as a human being.

That being said, her faith that Josh can “get better” has already brought her more suffering. My only hope is that Kaitlyn Grispi puts her own recovery first.

Update: More Awful Details From Josh Grispi’s Domestic Assault Case; Death Threat Text Messages Released

(Josh Grispi and Buddy the Pitbull, back in June 2011. / Photo via @joshgrispi)

In the wake of yesterday’s initial report about Josh Grispi‘s pair of arrests for assaulting his wife Kaitlyn — including the already-infamous detail about Grispi training his pitbull to attack her — WickedLocal has released an updated report about the situation, which paints the UFC/WEC veteran as a stone-cold sociopath. This is how it all went down, in chronological order…

– On Friday, Kaitlyn Grispi sent her mother Karen Fava a photo of herself with multiple bruises on her face and bleeding lips, taken after Josh had allegedly beaten her the day before. Fava showed the photo to the Middleboro Police Department, and officers visited the Grispis’ home that day to speak with Kaitlyn, who agreed to get an emergency restraining order against her husband and temporarily give custody of their two children to Fava.

– Grispi was then arrested for assault and battery, as well as multiple counts of improperly storing firearms near minors. “Inside the house police found handguns, rifles, an assault rifle and ammunition all belonging to Joshua. Most of the guns were unsecured and some were sitting in boxes inside their bedroom, police said. Next to their bed was a playpen with their 1-year-old daughter inside.”

– On Monday, Grispi posted $2,000 bail after his arraignment, and returned to his home. We’ll let WickedLocal take it from here:

Kaitlyn was supposed to extend the restraining order but didn’t do so because she “thought Joshua would be better,” court records show…

Things deteriorated quickly as Joshua began to yell at Kaitlyn about a pile of wood he had been looking for.

“Kaitlyn said she ran down the street and hid under a bush and Joshua found her. Joshua then began punching her in the head and forced her into the home,” court documents show. “Joshua got her inside the house and kept punching and kicking her over and over. Joshua was yelling at her, ‘You want me to (expletive) kill you?’”

Joshua was yelling at her, ‘You want me to (expletive) kill you?’”

She ran into a bathroom, and Joshua sent the dog after her before she managed to get out of the bathroom and run out of the house to her neighbor’s home, police said.

Police responded and arrested Joshua again Monday night. Another search of the house found more ammunition, 20 marijuana plants, 15 grams of cocaine and two teacup pot-belly pigs being kept as pets in the basement.

The dog and pigs have been put in the custody of animal control.

Kaitlyn told police her husband had been abusive to her for the past two years in their three-year marriage.

“She had been afraid to come forward because she has been threatened that he would kill her and her family,” court records show.

– Kaitlyn Grispi suffered bite marks on her legs during the dog attack, as well as bruises and scratches all over her body. And then there’s this: “Joshua would often choke the dog unconscious after the attacks, court records show.”

– Kaitlyn also has proof of the death threats that Josh had made against her. Court records reveal text messages that Josh sent to his wife over the last week:

“UR (expletive) dead and if u even try n bring my kids into it the worse it will b for u and if u try and make a seen (sic) I’ll choke u unconscious and smash ur throat and if u get worse n run around after I’m goin to let Buddy have at u and I’ll walk out of the room.”

“Don’t cure (sic) you whore, That’s all u think abor (sic) ur a (expletive) scum bag piece of (expletive) who I’m goin enjoy choking to death.”

“U better not b bluffing about cops cuz I don’t joke ur dead when I see u… Literally. I don’t care I’m going to beat u n throw u to buddy, Ur dead.”

Grispi is currently being held without bail (thank God), and will be due back in court October 3rd.

Of all the harrowing falls from grace in MMA history, Grispi’s story might be the worst of all time. In October 2010 he was set to face Jose Aldo at UFC 125 in the UFC’s first-ever featherweight title fight, following an incredible stint in the WEC. A month later, Aldo pulled out of the fight due to injury, and Grispi stayed on the UFC 125 card against Dustin Poirier. Grispi lost the fight by unanimous decision, and his title hopes went up in smoke.

Grispi would go on to lose three more consecutive UFC fights against George Roop, Rani Yahya, and Andy Ogle, and was released by the UFC in February 2013. But now, instead of being a footnote in MMA history, Josh Grispi will be best known for siccing his dog on his wife and then choking the dog. What the hell is wrong with people.

WEC/UFC Veteran Josh Grispi Charged For Horrific Assault Against Wife

(Photo via Getty)

Well, this is disturbing. According to a report by Wicked Local, former WEC/UFC fighter contender Josh “The Fluke” Grispi has been arrested and charged in a particularly heinous domestic abuse case, which included two separate assaults against his wife over a four day span and a trained pitbull attack. No joke, this sick f*cker brought an animal into the equation. Read on, if you can.

“It’s the worst case of domestic abuse I’ve ever seen,” police officer Richard Harvey said.

Harvey said the victim, Kaitlin Grispi, was mauled by Grispi’s pit bull, which had been trained to attack her. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but was later released and has been reunited with her two young children.

Grispi is charged with two counts of assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of violating a restraining order, animal cruelty, malicious damage to a motor vehicle, drug possession to cultivate marijuana and improper storage of a large capacity firearm and rifle or shotgun near a child.

After originally being arrested and released last Friday on $2,000 bail for the initial assault, Grispi was arrested again yesterday (while “his 3-year-old was sitting next to a box of guns and ammunition when police arrived,” BTW) and had his bail revoked. According to the article, Grispi is currently being held in the Plymouth House of Correction but pleaded innocent to all charges.

This is normally the point in the article where I’d give you a rundown of Grispi’s professional career over the past few years, but f*ck this piece of sh*t. If these charges have any truth to them, I hope they hang him by his toes and skin him alive. Or better yet, give him the old Django Unchained dog treatment. Seems fitting.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops. (Seriously though, f*ck you Josh Grispi.)

Four Reasons to Be Completely Psyched About UFC on FUEL 7: Barao vs. McDonald

(Fan-made poster via NixsonMmaPosters. Let’s just pretend that Siver isn’t there.)

We wouldn’t expect a FUEL card in London to be “stacked” in the traditional sense. But although this coming Saturday’s UFC on FUEL 7: Barao vs. McDonald event is low on star-power, it’s actually loaded with great matchups. Here’s why these fights are worth paying attention to…

1. The main card is a hot mess of blue-chip prospects.
Even more so than UFC on FUEL 7’s headliners, I’m excited to see the return of three guys who looked like juggernauts in their UFC debuts. First, we’ve got our old pal Ryan Jimmo, who entered the Octagon on a 16-fight win streak at UFC 149 and proceeded to sleep Anthony Perosh in just seven seconds, then gave fans their money’s worth by busting out a celebratory robot. Can he possibly repeat that performance this weekend against James Te-Huna?

Also in the light-heavyweight division, 12-0 Nigerian-English mauler Jimi Manuwa — who has never been to the third round in his entire career, by the way — will face Cyrille Diabaté, five months after Manuwa whipped Kyle Kingsbury to a doctor’s stoppage TKO after ten minutes of action. And finally, Icelandic grappling master Gunnar Nelson will follow up his swift choke-out of Damarques Johnson with a fight against Jorge Santiago, in a welterweight bout that will probably go very badly for Santiago.

The prelims also feature a few more guys who almost fit in the same “hot-prospect” category, including Stanislav Nedkov — who’s still technically undefeated after his loss to Thiago Silva was overturned in November — and Paul Sass, the submission wiz who took the first loss of his career against Matt Wiman in September.

2. Michael McDonald could become the youngest UFC champion ever* — and by a fairly wide margin.

2. Michael McDonald could become the youngest UFC champion ever* — and by a fairly wide margin.
When Jon Jones TKO’d Mauricio Rua to win the UFC light-heavyweight title at UFC 128, he was 23 years and nine months old. If Michael McDonald defeats Renan Barao for the interim bantamweight title in the UFC on FUEL 7 headliner, he’ll become a UFC champion at just 22 years and one month old. And make no mistake — “Mayday” McDonald has legitimately paid his dues for the opportunity. McDonald began competing professionally at the age of 16, and his current eight-fight win streak dates back to October 2009, when he was smashing everyone in his path as an 18-year-old in Tachi Palace Fights. Now 4-0 in the UFC and coming off first-round knockouts of Alex Soto and Miguel Torres, McDonald is a truly prodigious talent, and could give Barao the toughest test of his own phenomenal career.

3. Will Josh Grispi suffer the most dramatic career-implosion in UFC history?
Okay, this is more of a “reason to be morbidly curious” than a “reason to be completely psyched,” but it’s still worth mentioning. In 2010, Josh Grispi was one of the hottest featherweights on Earth, following an explosive 4-0 run in the WEC where he scored first-round stoppages of Mark Hominick, Micah Miller, Jens Pulver, and LC Davis. Grispi was booked to face Jose Aldo in the UFC’s first-ever featherweight title fight at UFC 125, but Aldo was forced to withdraw due to injury. Instead, Grispi faced newcomer Dustin Poirier in a non-title bout on the card, losing a unanimous decision and his title shot.

Later that year, Grispi took a rebound fight against George Roop, and wound up getting TKO’d in the third round. Finally, a bout against Brazilian journeyman Rani Yahya ended in another loss last August, this time by first-round submission. Now, “The Fluke” is facing TUF Live castmember Andy Ogle, who is officially 0-1 in the UFC. If Grispi manages to lose this one, he’ll almost certainly find himself released from the organization — the final chapter in a stunning reversal-of-fortune for his fight career.

4. Cub Swanson vs. Dustin Poirier is a great f*cking fight.
Like Cowboy vs. Pettis at UFC on FOX 6, this is the one matchup on the card that is virtually guaranteed to produce something spectacular. Swanson is on the hottest run of his career with consecutive knockouts of George Roop, Ross Pearson, and Charles Oliveira — and is usually the first guy that Greg Jackson-defenders point to as evidence that Yoda is not ruining the sport. Meanwhile, Poirier’s last four fights ended in three submission victories and an incredible Fight of Night performance against Chan Sung Jung. Swanson vs. Poirier could end in a swift and savage knockout, or it could turn out to be an unforgettable three-round war, but there’s no way it’ll be boring.

* Yes, I know Vitor Belfort was 19 years old when he won the UFC 12 tournament, so you don’t have to mention it in the comments section.
