At 6-foot-1 and around 240 pounds, Cain Velasquez is no small man in the ordinary world, but among the UFC’s supersized heavyweights, he hardly stands out for his size.
In fact, many heavyweights are either taller or heavier than Velasquez, and most are both. Yet by the end of 2010, it was Velasquez that reigned over the group of monster athletes.
For capturing the UFC heavyweight championship and completing a rapid rise to the top, Velasquez is MMA Fighting’s 2010 Fighter of the Year.

“That fight was very interesting,” says dos Santos with a chuckle. “Brock Lesnar tried to fight like a monster, like what he is. I think in my mind Cain was perfect, because he just waited (out) that initial pressure from Brock Lensar. (He) waited for the right moment to change the fight and win. Cain Velasquez was perfect in that fight.”

With an unbeaten record and a championship belt strapped around his waist, Cain Velasquez is the primary target of nearly every fighter who competes as a heavyweight fighter.
Velasquez knows that Junior dos Santos is the first challenger heading his direction, but when recently asked about his ideal matchup, the UFC kingpin crossed promotional lines, naming one of the sport’s greatest fighters of all time: Fedor Emelianenko.

UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson was four days removed from knee surgery when the UFC approached him about fighting on the Jan. 1 card. His doctor advised against it, but “Big Country” agreed anyway, which is what it makes it all the more painful to have the bout pulled out from under him now that his opponent, Shane Carwin, has withdrawn with a back injury, Nelson told MMA Fighting.
“I was bummed, but the only reason I was bummed was just because of how much I was pushed to fight Shane. Because of my knee surgery, my doctor said I shouldn’t fight until like February or March, and I kind of got pushed into it.
“That’s the reason why it hurts, more than anything, is just the fact that I was pushed into something that I really didn’t want to do but was going to do just because you don’t want to hear the ‘Are you an f-ing fighter?’ speech. Everybody knows, you never fight 100%, but it was an opportunity and I was more than willing to jump on the opportunity.”

What a wild, crazy, unpredictable sport MMA is. A few months ago the heavyweight fight everyone wanted to see was Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar, and MMA fans thought we’d be deprived of having one true heavyweight champion because Fedor and Lesnar would never fight each other.
Now Fedor and Lesnar have both suffered decisive first-round losses, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone anywhere who considers either one of them the top heavyweight in the sport.
That distinction now belongs to Cain Velasquez, who at UFC 121 erased any doubt that he’s the heavyweight champion of mixed martial arts. You know that Velasquez is No. 1, and you can see how 2-10 stack up below.
