If you’re expecting Roy Nelson to be bowled over by how quickly he went from reality show winner to potential No. 1 heavyweight contender, you can stop right now.
Even though a win over highly touted Brazilian striker Junior dos Santos at UFC 117 this weekend would likely net him a title shot, and less than a year after winning season 10 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Nelson isn’t in awe of how quickly things have progressed.
“It’s a little bit slower than I’d like, actually,” he told MMA Fighting. “Usually I’d like to fight for the belt a little bit sooner, but I’ll take it.”

Meanwhile, Roy Nelson has finally earned Dana White’s respect with his knockouts of Brendan Schaub and Stefan Struve, and is "a definite contender for the heavyweight championship." To get his shot, he’ll have to become the first UFC fighter to endure the fists of Junior Dos Santos, who has been leaving a very impressive trail of bodies in his wake. It’s a matchup that guarantees excitement, as opposed to main event, in which…well, if Silva dances around and mocks his opponent for five more excruciating rounds, don’t act like you didn’t see it coming.

Stop and think for a moment about where Chris Leben was in his mixed martial arts career at the beginning of 2010: In his most recent fight he had been submitted by the eminently mediocre Jake Rosholt. Before that he had served a suspension for testing positive for steroids following his loss to Michael Bisping. It had been 22 months since he last won a fight, and he was probably one more loss away from getting cut from the UFC.
But what a 2010 it’s been: Leben is 3-0 this year, he’s cashed bonus checks for Fight of the Night and Knockout of the Night, and he’s gone from being known mostly as a guy who acted like a jerk on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter to getting a huge ovation from the crowd after winning the co-main event at the UFC’s biggest card of the year.
