Jussier Formiga

Long-time flyweight contender Jussier Formiga has been released by the UFC according to a report from MMA Fighting.

Formiga is currently riding a three-fight losing streak. The 35-year-old was TKO’d by leg kicks from Alex Perez earlier this year. Perez is now set to challenge Deiveson Figueiredo for the 125lb title at UFC 255. Prior to that he dropped to a decision loss to Brendan Moreno after being knockout out by Joseph Benavidez.

During his UFC run, Formiga was a perennial contender but never managed to challenge for the flyweight title. He picked up several high-profile wins over the likes of Sergio Pettis, Dustin Ortiz, Wilson Reis, Scott Jorgensen, and Chris Cariaso to put himself into a strong position. He is also the only man to ever beat current flyweight champion, Deiveson Figueiredo, picking up a unanimous decision win over his compatriot just last year.

Unfortunately for the Brazilian, he was never able to convert any of his big wins into big opportunities. Formiga fell short in several contender fights against Benavidez (twice), Henry Cejudo, Ray Borg, and John Dodson. He leaves the UFC with a record of nine wins against seven losses.

Do you think the UFC are right to cut Jussier Formiga?

The UFC will make their first trip of the year to Brasil on March 14. In a press release on Thursday the company announced a handful of fights for the card which is starting to take shape. Jussier Formiga vs. Brandon Moreno was the pick of the bunch and will likely determine the next top contender at 125lbs.

The 34-year-old Formiga had been riding a 4-fight win
streak, holding wins over the likes of Segio Pettis and Deiveson Figueiredo. However, that streak came to an end in devastating fashion
last time out. Jospeh Benavidez earned his shot at the vacant 125lb title by landing
a flush head kick and a bunch of follow up strikes to take out Formiga inside
two rounds. He’ll now look to get back in the mix at 125lbs by taking out
Brandon Moreno.

Since being amazingly released by the UFC last year Moreno
has been in excellent form. The 26-year-old won the LFA flyweight title in his
first fight outside the octagon before being recalled to the UFC. Once there he
has provided value for money in two great fights. The first was scored a draw
but Moreno can count himself unlucky not to have got the judge’s decision. However,
he would leave no doubt in his recent fight with Kai Kara France. He picked up
the decision on all three scorecards and ended the Australians 8-fight win
streak in the process. He now gets a quick turnaround at UFC Brasilia.

Alongside this matchup the UFC also announced a bantamweight fight between Rani Yahya and Enrique Barzola. In the women’s bantamweight division, Veronica Macedo will face Bea Malecki.

As of right now the card is still without a main event. Although it is taking shape, see below for every fight the promotion have announced for UFC Brasilia on March 14.

Amanda Ribas vs. Paige VanZant

Antonio Carlos Junior vs. Brad Tavares

Nikita Krylov vs. Johnny Walker

Maryna Moroz vs. Mayra Bueno Silva

Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos vs. Alexey
Kunchenko

Jussier Formiga vs. Brandon Moreno

Enrique Barzola vs. Rani Yahya

Veronica Macedo vs. Bea Malecki

Paige VanZant meets Amanda Ribas in a women’s flyweight bout while Brad Tavares meets Antonio Carlos Junior in battle of middleweights as well.

In addition, Rani Yahya meets Enrique Barzola while Veronica Macedo returns to bantamweight when she meets Bea Malecki. Elizue Zaleski is also reported to be on the card as he will meet Alexey Kunchenko according to MMA Fighting sources. It is not known which fight will be the event’s headliner.

As for UFC Auckland which takes place February 23, Kai Kara-France will compete in his home country when he faces Tyson Nam in a flyweight contest. Kara-France recently suffered a unanimous decision defeat against Moreno at UFC 245.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, two more fights have also been added to the card including Callan Porter vs. Song Kenan and Jamie Mullarkey vs. Jalin Turner.

UFC Auckland will be headlined by a lightweight bout between Dan Hooker and Paul Felder.
