Kamaru Usman felt the hometown love during a recent visit to his native Nigeria.

The UFC welterweight king has proudly put the soul of Nigeria on his back. Usman has repeatedly spoken of how important it is to him as a champion and a man to show love for his native country. This week, his homeland gave him the love right back.

In his first trip home since defending the welterweight title against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261, Usman received a roaring welcome as he arrived at the Lagos Food Bank in the country’s capital city. Usman shared a video of the homecoming through his Instagram story feed, which Damon Martin captured.

The hometown crowd had much to celebrate. Usman captured a Performance of the Night bonus, knocking Masvidal out in the second round of the main event. The win put a stamp on Usman’s dominance in the sport. He’s currently undefeated in the UFC and has only one professional loss from back in 2013. As to Usman’s status as the welterweight GOAT, the debate has already begun as he looks to add another title defense later this summer.

Usman is looking to retain his title in a much-anticipated rematch with the division’s top contender, Colby Covington, later this year. Although a date is yet to be confirmed, the UFC has hinted at the rematch happening in the fall.

For his part, Covington has been very vocal about the rematch and critical of Usman. He has taken to social media to bash the champion.

With the rematch not finalized, Covington has also accused Usman of ducking him because of the rematch. Still, Usman is unfazed as Covington’s accusations join the list with others like Leon Edwards. For now, he is enjoying receiving the love as the pride of Nigeria.

Do you think Kamaru Usman will defend his title against Colby Covington in their rematch?

Leon Edwards continued his winning ways at UFC 263 this past weekend.

The Englishman survived a late scare to pick up a unanimous decision win over Nate Diaz on Saturday night.

‘Rocky’ has been perfect since losing to Kamaru Usman in 2015. He was nine wins from 10 fights, the only blemish on his record being a no-contest due to an accidental eye poke when he fought Belal Muhammad earlier this year.

Despite the impressive form of Edwards, Usman suggested post-fight at UFC 263 that his former doe doesn’t deserve a rematch.

“That don’t help you,” Usman told ESPN after Edwards won a unanimous decision at UFC 263. “I guess no one deserves it.”

After hearing about Usman’s comments, Edwards accused the welterweight champion of making excuses to avoid fighting him.

“All these guys making excuses,” Edwards said at the UFC 263 post-fight press conference. “They know I’m the real deal. They know I’m the man for the title shot. They’re all b*tching and making excuses and saying ‘he doesn’t deserve it.’ Then who f*cking does? Colby don’t deserve it. [Tyron] Woodley got injured [in their fight] and now [Covington is] deserving a title shot?

“I didn’t b*tch, I didn’t moan, I took my loss on the chin. I worked my back up to a nine-fight win streak. Who else f*cking deserves it?”

Dana White suggested before UFC 263 that Covington is next in line for a shot at the 170lb champion. ‘Chaos’ has won just one fight since falling short in his first UFC title bid in 2019. Post-fight the UFC president asserted that Covington is still next in line for the 170lb title shot.

“I feel I should be next for the title shot,” Edwards said. “That’s nine in a row, 10 in a row, there’s no one else that’s doing what I’m doing. I’ve offered to fight everybody. Khamzat [Chimaev], Diaz, Belal [Muhammad], these guys are not even in the top-10.

“I’m the one saying yes, everyone else is b*tching and sitting out and complaining. I’m the one showing up and beating these tough guys. I feel I deserve the next shot for sure.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Dana White: Colby Covington, Not Leon Edwards, Still Next For Kamaru Usman

Covington UsmanColby Covington is still next in line for Kamaru Usman. That’s according to UFC president Dana White who was commenting on the welterweight title picture following UFC 263 last night. Covington Usman

Colby Covington is still next in line for Kamaru Usman.

That’s according to UFC president Dana White who was commenting on the welterweight title picture following UFC 263 last night. While many felt a definitive win for Leon Edwards over Nate Diaz would give him the shot, the manner of how the fight ended ultimately didn’t do him any favors.

Instead, White believes a grudge match with Jorge Masvidal could be an option for Edwards while maintaining that Covington would still get the next title shot.

“That’s always a fight that we can make,” White said of Edwards vs. Masvidal in the post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting). “That fight’s always going to be hanging out there. Leon’s the No. 3 ranked guy in the world, so we’ll see what’s next for him. I’m not sure if it’s Masvidal, but Colby Covington is the next guy in line for the title.”

That’s not to say White was unimpressed with Edwards, however.

You’ve been hearing me say leading up to this fight that Leon Edwards is the kid with the worst luck ever in UFC history,” White added. “Goes in tonight into a five-round fight against a tough, durable Nate Diaz who’s always dangerous, and tonight was a great learning experience for him.

“He looked incredible in the entire fight, even when he got hurt. Kept his composure — I think it was a little bit of he got stung, and he was tired. You think about it, and that kid hasn’t fought in probably a year-and-a-half. So, great performance.”

It’s harsh on Edwards to not get a title shot despite being unbeaten in his last nine. However, he didn’t do himself any favors by not going for the kill against Diaz.

Kamaru Usman was not impressed by Leon Edwards.

Edwards earned arguably the biggest win of his career following a unanimous decision victory over Nate Diaz on the main card of UFC 263 on Saturday night.

However, it wasn’t all that impressive as while he dominated for the most part, he never really went for the kill. To make matters worse, Diaz wobbled him towards the end of the fifth round and with a little more time, may have been finished.

Edwards survived though and won the unanimous verdict. Was it enough to earn the next title shot that he’s been calling for? Usman doesn’t think so.

“That don’t help you,” Usman told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto on the performance of Edwards. “I guess no one deserves it.”

To that, Edwards reacted in the post-fight press conference.

“All those guys are making excuses, they know I’m the real deal,” Edwards said. ” … Then who fucking does [deserve it]? Colby doesn’t. … Who else fucking deserves it?”

Who do you think deserves the next shot?
