Colby Covington apparently wasn’t at his best when he fought Kamaru Usman for the UFC welterweight championship this past December.

Covington headlined the UFC 245 pay-per-view (PPV) against Usman in what was a great back-and-forth bout. However, when it was all said and done, Usman picked up the fifth-round TKO win after breaking Covington’s jaw midway through the contest. It was surprising to many that neither Usman nor Covington attempted to wrestle during the fight, as they’re both extremely talented grapplers.

With that being said, Covington was recently a guest on the “It’s All About Who You Know” podcast to talk about the December loss, and revealed he was actually dealing with a bout of food poisoning before the contest. Covington noted the UFC was preparing his meals before the fight, and one of the meals actually made him very sick. He wasn’t feeling up to his full strength for the fight, which is why he decided not to wrestle. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“I’m not making excuses,” Covington said. “I haven’t really told anybody, but the UFC was preparing meals for me all fight week, and I ended up getting really sick of one of their meals. I think they didn’t cook the chicken very good, and I got food poisoning two nights before the fight. I puked like 30 times, literally like 30 times.”

Covington went on to say that he even considered pulling out of the fight given how sick he became. But after speaking with manager and American Top Team (ATT) owner Dan Lambert, Covington was convinced to stay in the fight, and very nearly won the title before being stopped late.

“I told my manager Dan Lambert ‘I’m going to have to pull out of the fight, man,’” Covington said. “He’s like ‘no, you can’t pull out man, you’re the main event. You can’t do this to the UFC, you just need to go through with it.’ I ended up going through with it, but I didn’t feel my best. That kind of played into the decision not to wrestle [in the fight] because I didn’t feel strong.

“It’s like I was holding back a little bit because I knew I was puking, my liver and intestines were all messed up and I wasn’t at full strength. So what I’m trying to say is I was on my worst day and ‘Marty Fake Newsman’ was on his best day and I still beat him. So you can imagine what’s going to happen in the rematch when I’m at my best and he’s at whatever level he’s at. It’s going to be a completely different outcome.”

In recent interviews, Covington has suggested he is seeking an immediate rematch with Usman for the title. “Chaos” is convinced that the officiating for the fight was poor, and the stoppage in the fifth round was premature. While it looks like the UFC is instead going in the direction of Jorge Masvidal vs. Kamaru Usman next, it will be interesting to see if Covington gets his wish.

What do you think about Covington’s claim that he had food poisoning before his fight with Usman?

Colby Covington: Kamaru Usman vs. Jorge Masvidal Won’t Happen

Usman Masvidal Covington

Colby Covington believes both Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal will avoid fighting each other for their own reasons.

Masvidal is seemingly next in line for a shot at Usman’s welterweight title with UFC president Dana White planning for it to take place at International Fight Week in the summer.

Despite White’s plans, the pair — who clearly don’t like each other — still have to negotiate their bout agreement. And Covington believes Masvidal will end up chasing a more lucrative fight with Conor McGregor or Nate Diaz only to price himself out:

“To be honest, I’m calling it right now — let all the people know,” Covington told MMA Fighting. “Let Dana [White] and all the people know in this interview that ‘Street Judas’ also known as ‘Journeyman’ Jorge Masvidal is not going to fight ‘Marty Fakenewsman.’ He’s going to wait and price himself out.

“He’s going to try and wait to fight ‘Con Man’ [Conor] McGregor, the little Irish leprechaun, who couldn’t knock an old dude off a barstool. The guy’s got no f*cking power. He couldn’t fight himself out of a wet paper bag. But we’re not talking about ‘Con Man’ McGregor. We’re talking about ‘Street Judas.’ He’s going to think he’s worth more, his value is more and he’s going to wait for Conor or even a Nate Diaz rematch, the soy boy, because everybody knows those Stockton slaps don’t do sh*t. He’s going to price himself out.”

Even if Masvidal does end up agreeing to fight Usman, Covington claims the champion will end up faking injuries to avoid a fight.

“What ‘Marty Fakenewsman’ is going to do, he’s going to fake injuries again,” Covington said. “He’s going to make up injuries. He does not want to fight anybody. He doesn’t want to fight Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington again because he knows he got his a** beat on Dec. 14 and he got lucky and he got saved by a ref. He got life rafts from a ref.

“We’ll have to see what happens. I don’t think ‘Journeyman’ Jorge Masvidal is stepping up to the plate.”

Covington notably lost to Usman when they met in their welterweight title fight at UFC 245 in December. However, “Chaos” clearly feels hard done by the controversial stoppage from referee Marc Goddard in the fifth round.

And if Usman vs. Masvidal doesn’t pan out as he predicts, he expects to get the next title shot instead and is open to fighting in July:

“That’s the perfect time,” Covington added. “By July, International Fight Week, I’m coming back for the people. I’m coming back for America. I’m America’s champ. At International Fight Week, the champion is going to defend his title. It’s going to be a rematch of what went down Dec. 14, this time with a real and fair playing field. It’s going to be a completely different fight.

“The rematch is going to be completely different because it will be a fair playing field and I will get my hand raised for the people.”

The trash talk between Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman continues.

Masvidal is expected to be next in line to challenge for Usman’s welterweight title and things have certainly heated up between the pair in recent weeks. Most notable was their Super Bowl media day altercation which further highlighted that they don’t like each other.

In a more humorous shift, however, Masvidal recently decided to mock footage of Usman’s pad work. He did this by apologizing to ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith, who took a lot of grief for his own pad work footage that did the rounds.

“I want to apologize to @stephenasmith on behalf of the mma community. They had something to say about you but wtf is this?”

As for when a fight could happen, UFC president Dana White recently revealed that it could take place during International Fight Week in the summer which is still some time away.

However, both fighters are open to other options, namely a lucrative fight with Conor McGregor, with Usman recently hinting that he could face the Irishman next.

We’ll just have to wait and see what’s next for both of them.

Do you think we’ll see Masvidal challenge for Usman’s title next?

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman wants in on red panty night.

Currently, odds are that Usman will make his next welterweight title defense against Jorge Masvidal. Masvidal comes off of a Fighter Of The Year run in 2019. “Gamebred” finished all three of his opponents, those being Darren Till, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz. Now, after a recent Super Bowl media day altercation between Masvidal and Usman, UFC president Dana White has suggested he’s looking to book the fight for International Fight Week in July.

However, Usman has not yet confirmed that he’ll be fighting Masvidal next. In fact, he’s keeping his options wide open. Speaking to media recently during UFC 247 fight week, “The Nigerian Nightmare” suggested he could be fighting Conor McGregor next, as he wants a red panty night of his own. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“Hey, if that’s one thing you guys know about the UFC, nothing’s a done deal unless it’s a done deal,” Usman said. “No, we haven’t signed anything yet. Everybody likes ‘Red Panty Night,’ right? I like ‘Red Panty Night’ myself. It is what it is. Once those contracts are signed, everything is signed, sealed and delivered.”

Usman suggested that he and McGregor headlining International Fight Week could be a special kind of red panty night. McGregor has won titles in two divisions within the UFC already. Those being the featherweight and lightweight divisions. Now, the opportunity to challenge for a record-breaking third division title, behind McGregor’s name, would be massive. Usman seems more than willing to put his gold up against the Irishman this summer.

“Absolutely!” Usman said. “What? That might be the nice ‘Red Panty Night’ with the laces and everything. Anything could happen; let’s just say that. Anything could happen.”

McGregor comes off of a 40-second victory over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the main event of the UFC 246 pay-per-view (PPV) last month. Now, he has a plethora of options on the table. One of those, of course, being Usman. But McGregor is also chasing down a rematch with the last man to defeat him, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov is slated to defend his title against Tony Ferguson in the UFC 249 PPV main event this April. Should one of those men get injured, however, McGregor seems to be willing to be on standby to jump in and save the card.
