Kamaru Usman will make his first career UFC welterweight title defense this weekend (Sat. December 14, 2019).

Usman puts his 170-pound title up for grabs against Colby Covington in the UFC 245 pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Last month, the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion held a press conference to promote the fight. During the presser, Covington accused Usman of abusing the performance-enhancing drug (PED), EPO.

Now, speaking to MMA Fighting, Usman has denied Covington’s accusations. In fact, he didn’t even know what EPO was until he looked it up later:

“He kept saying that, and I’m like what is that?” Usman said. “I didn’t know what that was, and then somebody explained to me what it was. I haven’t changed since the first moment I came to the UFC. I haven’t changed from my first professional fight to my last fight.

“I look the exact same because I put in the exact same amount of work each and every time. The only thing that changes are my skills, and that comes with the time spent honing my craft.”

It will be interesting to see what happens when Usman and Covington finally lock horns. Both men are very similar in skillset, as they’re extremely gifted wrestlers with the ability to keep a relentless pace. The rivalry they’ve built up over the last few months adds a nice bit of intrigue to the fight as well.

What do you make of Usman’s response to Covington’s PED’s accusations?

Last month, upon the announcement of their UFC 245 main event, Colby Covington accused UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman of using EPO.

Covington, however, did not divulge his sources – until now. Speaking to “The Schmo” in a recent interview, Covington suggests he’s heard from Usman’s training partners that “The Nigerian Nightmare” is on EPO.

“My sources are, I’ve heard a lot of second hand from a lot of his training partners that – they’ve said that they know for a fact that he’s on EPO, he’s been doing steroids his whole career,” Covington said.

“I think his strength coach is a doctor. Also, he has another guy that used to train at their gym, I can’t remember the guy’s name, but he used to give all the guys steroids back in the day in the MMA world, so you might want to look into that guy.”

Usman and Covington meet this Saturday (December 14, 2019) in the UFC 245 main event on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Covington and Usman are both very dominant inside the Octagon, with very similar styles. Both men possess great wrestling ability, and can keep a ridiculous pace that nearly none of their opponents have been able to match.

When the two heated rivals finally clash inside the Octagon, it will be interesting to see who can impose their will on the other and come out on top.

Current UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman very nearly retired back in 2018.

Speaking to the “TSN MMA Show,” Usman divulged that, when he was ranked No. 7 in the world prior to his booking against Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC Chile in May 2018, the UFC had a tough time finding opponents who would be willing to fight him.

“The organization said, ‘That guy turned it down, that guy turned it down, that guy turned it down,’” Usman said. “I was like, ‘You know what? There’s no point.’”

However, after Ponzinibbio pulled from the fight, Usman instead fought Demian Maia, who he beat before doing the same to Rafael dos Anjos, and then Tyron Woodley to win the welterweight crown. But even long before that, before Usman had even entered the top 15, “The Nigerian Nightmare” had a difficult time finding opponents as well.

“I couldn’t get a fight. I couldn’t get guys to fight me. Guys really didn’t want to take the gamble by fighting me,” Usman said. “You had all these top guys – guys in the top 10, top 15 – and then you’ve got a big shark that will eat up all of you guys that’s circling the waters around you guys. And nobody wanted to let me into the party.”

Of course, once he actually entered the rankings, the struggles didn’t stop there.

“Once I got in (the rankings), it was kind of a hassle to get these guys to fight me because they knew what would happen: I would dominate them and eventually, I would be the UFC welterweight champion of the world, which is what I am right now,” Usman said.

Now, Usman prepares to make his first-ever title defense against hated rival Colby Covington. The pair headline UFC 245 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 14.
