UFC legend Georges St-Pierre knows how his prime self would approach a bout with reigning welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

When the topic of conversation surrounds who the GOAT is at 170 pounds, there are two names that inevitably come up: St-Pierre and Usman. Up until recently, the former was seemingly alone in the debate and unchallenged. But with his ongoing dominance, “The Nigerian Nightmare” has caused a divide.

Option number one, St-Pierre, is a UFC Hall of Famer who defended the welterweight title a record nine times. During his 19 wins in the division, a record shared with Neil Magny, GSP defeated names like Nick Diaz, Carlos Condit, Matt Serra, BJ Penn, and Matt Hughes. “Rush” also achieved champ-champ status when he dethroned Michael Bisping to collect middleweight gold in 2017.

Option number two, Usman, has joined GSP in the debate off the back of an undefeated tenure in the UFC that has seen him dethrone Tyron Woodley with ease and defend the title on five occasions, twice each versus Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal, and once against Gilbert Burns.

With their impressive accomplishments in mind, for many, the debate comes down to their individual skillsets and abilities. So, how would prime St-Pierre fare against Usman?

How about we let the man himself provide an answer…

St-Pierre: I Would Put Usman On His Back

During an interview with MMA News’ own James Lynch, St-Pierre assessed his chances against the man currently reigning over the welterweights in similar vein to his own stint on the throne a number of years ago.

After describing Usman’s strengths when it comes to controlling against the cage, St-Pierre suggested he’d utilize his active, movement-based style to counter. Beyond that, the name of the game would be takedowns. For GSP, the key would be testing Usman in waters he’s never swam in.

“Usman has a style that he is very good at chain wrestling. He’s very good when he puts his opponent against the fence. He can do it all. He’s very well rounded,” admitted St-Pierre. “His main speciality in wrestling, he’s very good at putting his opponent against the fence and working from there.

“My style, I was more a guy that moves, moves, hit and run, so to speak. That was my game. So, my game would have been to put him down, but with feints and proactive and reactive takedowns,” GSP told MMA News.

“I would have, If I would have fought him, tried to put him on his back because I’ve never seen him there. That would have been my strategy.”

Some may suggest that given Usman’s wrestling credentials and dominance in that department to date, taking him down would be an ambitious route to victory. However, for “Rush,” the key to tackling the best is to find their weaknesses, which he believes are usually embedded in their strengths.

“Where someones seems stronger than everybody, that is the place where you need to attack. Sometimes their strength gets transformed to a weak link. You never know how he fights on his back,” suggested St-Pierre. “Nobody has ever exposed him there. There’s guys that are very good wrestlers, but once they’re on their back, they’ve never been there, so you don’t know how they will react.

“Would I succeed or not? We’ll never know [LAUGHS]… I think so, because I’m a fighter and I’m kind of biased,” said GSP. “There is nobody that I have fought that I wasn’t able to put down. But it’s a different era, a different time, guys get better. Usman is just fantastic. He’s the best right now.”

While many share the sentiment that St-Pierre remains at the head of the table for the time being, the man himself has previously said that Usman is well on his way to surpassing him.

Unfortunately, with the Canadian remaining firm on his decision to retire, a fantasy clash between GSP and Usman will likely remain just that: a fantasy.

How do you think prime Georges St-Pierre would fare against Kamaru Usman?

Canelo Álvarez has issued a new response to UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman’s calls for a fight inside the boxing ring.

Álvarez recently addressed the possibility during an interview with TMZ Sports. The unified super-middleweight champion said he’s currently focused on growing his legacy inside the boxing ring, so a fight with Usman doesn’t seem to be a priority. However, that could change in the future.

“Never say no, but right now it’s not in my future,” Álvarez said (via MMA Junkie). “Not right now. Yeah, it’s all about legacy right now, but you never know.”

Usman has essentially cleaned out his 170-pound division, with five successful title defenses under his belt. Undefeated in the UFC, “The Nigerian Nightmare” is on a 19-fight winning streak since suffering his first and only loss of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career back in 2013.

Since climbing the top of the welterweight mountain; Usman owns wins over names such as Demian Maia, Rafael dos Anjos, Tyron Woodley, Colby Covington, Gilbert Burns, Jorge Masvidal, Leon Edwards, and more.

He has grown into one of the most dominant champions the UFC has ever seen and is currently on the mend from hand surgery. While Usman waits for a new challenger to his 170-pound throne to emerge, he’d like to make a massive payday and test himself against one of the greatest boxers of all time in Canelo Álvarez.

Canelo currently reigns as the IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring super-middleweight champion. Much like Usman, Canelo hasn’t lost since suffering the first and only defeat of his professional boxing career — a decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September of 2013. Since, Álvarez has grown into boxing’s biggest star, and most dominant force.

A potential clash between the pair would be an intriguing spectacle for combat sports fans to enjoy.

Chael Sonnen Challenged Joe Rogan’s Opinion On Canelo Alvarez Vs. Kamaru Usman Boxing Match

Chael SonnenChael Sonnen has challenged Joe Rogan on his opinion regarding a boxing match between Canelo Alvarez and Kamaru Usman. ‘The Bad Guy’ gave his take on the potential fight and sat on the other side of the fence to Rogan. Chael Sonnen has challenged Joe Rogan on his opinion regarding a boxing match between Canelo Alvarez and Kamaru Usman.

‘The Bad Guy’ gave his take on the potential fight and sat on the other side of the fence to Rogan. In a recent video on his Youtube channel, Sonnen stressed to his viewers that what occurred in the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight doesn’t apply to all MMA fighters who seek to transition to boxing.

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has made it no secret that he has ambitions of boxing Canelo Alvarez. The Nigerian has brought it up in multiple interviews, and the combat sports fans have latched onto the idea and ran with it. Analysts across boxing and MMA have shared their thoughts on the fight if it was to materialize, including Joe Rogan and Chael Sonnen.

Both Joe Rogan and Chael Sonnen share different views, with Rogan believing it would be a smart move from the champion to secure a large paycheck and improve his boxing skill-set tremendously. On the other hand, Sonnen questions why Rogan is under the impression that his statement is accurate, and if he was basing it on the fight between Mayweather and McGregor.

Chael Sonnen Challenges Joe Rogan

“Joe [Rogan] was very sweet he said [Usman] he could go make a ton of money for one, and two, he would get a lot better,” Chael Sonnen said. “He would really sharpen up a skill set if he was fully focused on boxing so when he comes back to MMA that’s gonna tradition. Now, where are we getting that from? Like what historical evidence do we have of either of those claims because I continue to hear it.”

“If we’re so sure, it’s gonna be so helpful for Kamaru Usman in this case, we could be talking about anybody,” he added. “But in this case [it’s] Kamaru’s money. If we’re so sure, where’s the example? Because it’s only been done one time meaningfully. It was Conor vs. Floyd and yes some guys lost some major money on that. That’s true. Those guys made a ton of money that is true. But it’s also true what I’m telling you. They didn’t rematch for a reason. Somebody made a bad bet. It’s the truth. So if you’re looking over there as an idea for what you’re going to do financially, I would caution you. The other side of the coin, if you can drum up enough interest and you get in on the boxing model which always has something to do with the back and yeah there could still be a meaningful check there, just set your expectations.”

Chael Sonnen continued to back up his statement by eluding that McGregor didn’t return a better fighter after making the crossover.

And the final thing that I would say, what is it pure boxing that’s carried over and for who did it carry over for, in the sport of MMA, I just think that’s a tough sell, I also know if I was in Kamaru’s spot, I would go do it,” he pointed out. “Regardless of anything that I just said. If that was a one time opportunity, if you have the chance to go test something and by the way against the best in the world, and you think you can compete with him. And you’re a true competitor and Usman is, I would not begrudge any of it, I would understand it fully. I’m just speaking to the comment that it’s going to be helpful to come back over here, it’s only been done one time, it was done by Conor, what about Conor going into boxing and returning to MMA, did you see that you thought was a positive.”

Usman is currently undergoing recovery after hand surgery but is expected to defend his welterweight strap against Leon Edwards this Summer. Then, Alvarez is currently booked for a title fight with Dmitry Bivol, likely leading to a fight with nemesis Gennadiy Golovkin.

Do you agree with Chael Sonnen’s argument against Joe Rogan?

Canelo Alvarez Not Interested in Kamaru Usman Fight: “Right Now it’s Not in My Future”

Canelo AlvarezNo.1 pound-for-pound boxer, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez doesn’t seem all that interested in boxing the UFC’s No.1 pound-for-pound fighter, Kamaru Usman, at least for the time being.  Although he didn’t completely rule out the possibility, the current IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO, and Ring Super-Middleweight Champion doesn’t seem set on facing the UFC Welterweight Champion anytime soon.  […]

No.1 pound-for-pound boxer, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez doesn’t seem all that interested in boxing the UFC’s No.1 pound-for-pound fighter, Kamaru Usman, at least for the time being.

Although he didn’t completely rule out the possibility, the current IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO, and Ring Super-Middleweight Champion doesn’t seem set on facing the UFC Welterweight Champion anytime soon.

This isn’t the first time a championship-caliber MMA fighter wanted to test their skills in the boxing ring against one of boxing’s greatest. In 2017, then UFC Champion, Connor McGregor challenged Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, in what turned into the second-highest selling Pay-Per-View in combat sports history.

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has been adamant in his campaign for a boxing match against Alvarez in recent months, although Dana White and the UFC have not taken steps to join him in the promotion of a super fight. He has constantly called out the superstar boxer in interviews, press conferences, and through social media.

“In 2022, I’m gonna shock the world. July, International Fight Week, I’m gonna fight Leon Edwards. God willing I get through Leon Edwards, September, Mexican Independence Day, I will stop Canelo Alvarez,” Usman said (Via TMZ Sports).

Could Kamaru Usman vs. Canelo Alvarez Be the Fight to Make?

Kamaru Usman, who is currently healing from hand ligament surgery at the moment, is set to face off against Leon Edwards in July, while Alvarez will challenge Dmitry Bivol for his Light Heavyweight title on May 7.

Canelo Alvarez sat down with TMZ to speak on his ideas about the possible matchup with Usman.

“Never say no, but right now it’s not in my future. Not right now. Yeah, it’s all about legacy right now, but you never know.” (Via MMAJunkie).

Never have we seen the two very best in their respective sports face off against one another for ultimate glory and bragging rights in their athletic primes.  Although it doesn’t seem likely at the moment, there is no denying a matchup of this caliber would send shockwaves throughout combat sports.

Joe Rogan Advises Conor McGregor To Take ‘Warm-Up’ Fight Before Meeting Kamaru Usman

Conor McGregorUFC color commentator, Joe Rogan has urged former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor, to accept a “warm-up” fight in his expected Octagon return this year, before chasing a third title against welterweight kingpin, Kamaru Usman. Conor McGregor

UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan has urged former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor, to accept a “warm-up” fight in his expected Octagon return this year, before chasing a third title against welterweight kingpin, Kamaru Usman.

Conor McGregor, who is expected to return to the Octagon in the fall as per UFC president, Dana White – has called for both an immediate lightweight title fight against current champion, Charles Oliveira in his UFC return, but most recently, welcomed a welterweight title siege in a bid to become a three-weight world champion, against Usman

“I believe myself versus (Kamaru) Usman for the 170lb title for my comeback fight is the one I’m eyeballing at the minute,” Conor McGregor said. “I’ve gotten myself down to a lightweight frame, but I’m big now. I feel big. I feel strong. I feel healthy. I’ve got good energy.”

Conor McGregor has been sidelined since a UFC 264 loss to Dustin Poirier last July

However, despite McGregor’s calls for a welterweight title affair against Usman, the #2 ranked, Leon Edwards is expected to rematch the latter in a title fight this summer, with a July landing pad for the title re-run currently earmarked by the organization.

Sharing his thoughts on McGregor’s impending Octagon return later this year, Rogan appeared on HotBoxin’ with Mike Tyson – where he suggested Conor McGregor fight a less than elite level opponent in his next UFC walk.

“If Conor (McGregor) wants the most chance of success, I would say fight a guy who is a little below championship level,” Joe Rogan said. “Maybe a guy on the come-up, who Conor has an advantage over, but it’s still a competitive fight. Give him a test, but don’t put him in there right away with (Kamaru) Usman.”

“I think, honestly, when boxers come back from a long layoff and they come back from a loss, one thing that boxers do that’s smart is they have a tune-up fight,” Joe Rogan continued. “I think there’s a reason why they’ve been using tune-up fights forever like astute managers. They know you’ve got to knock the dust off and you’ll be better in the next performance. To jump fight into a Dustin Poirier or right into, name it, Michael Chandler, like right into a guy who’s the elite of the elite.”

In McGregor’s most recent win, the Dubliner stopped Donald Cerrone with a blistering 40-second knockout win in January 2020. And Rogan believes an opponent of the same calibre as Cerrone should await McGregor when he returns.

“I think what Conor needs to do is what Conor wants to do,” Joe Rogan said. “If Conor thinks he can go up and fight Usman and make a big payday, try to become a three-division champion, he should do that. He should do whatever he wants to do, but if I was like a manager to him, and I said what’s the best path to success, the best path to success is like the ‘Cowboy’ (Donald Cerrone) fight. No disrespect to ‘Cowboy’, but that fight turned out to be kind of like a warm-up fight.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Following a recent appearance at Blanchardstown District Court, Conor McGregor insisted that he would prefer to compete at the welterweight limit in his return to active competition following his July tibia fracture.
