Rampage Jackson Would Like You to Know That the UFC Is Lying About Its Pay-Per-View Numbers

(Video via YouTube.com/KarynBryant. Skip to 17:35 for the money quote.)

Following his loss to Glover Teixeira at UFC on FOX 6 — allegedly his final performance in the Octagon — Quinton Jackson sat down with his old friend Karyn Bryant for a sprawling 44-minute interview about his relationship with the UFC and what he has planned for the future. The interview has become newsworthy for a couple reasons. For one, Jackson offers to drag his balls across Bryant’s face. It is what it is, I guess. No amount of bad publicity is going to stop Jackson from being weird with female reporters, and that’s not going to change no matter what he decides to do with the rest of his life.

The other interesting moment comes when Jackson starts opening up (or “complaining,” if you’re one of his haters) about the way the UFC reports its pay-per-view numbers to fighters. Many of the UFC’s marquee athletes earn a cut of PPV sales for the events they compete on, which makes it very important for those fighters to get an accurate assessment of what those numbers are. Unfortunately, the figures aren’t made public, so the fighters have to take their employer’s word for it — never an ideal situation when money is on the line. Here’s what ‘Page had to say (via MMMania):

Many of the UFC’s marquee athletes earn a cut of PPV sales for the events they compete on, which makes it very important for those fighters to get an accurate assessment of what those numbers are. Unfortunately, the figures aren’t made public, so the fighters have to take their employer’s word for it — never an ideal situation when money is on the line. Here’s what ‘Page had to say (via MMMania):

In my opinion, I feel like me and the rest of the UFC fighters are getting taken advantage of. I feel like the UFC is cleaning house. The pay-per-view dollars? They tell me one number, but then they tell the press another. Pay me the numbers that you tell the press! Don’t tell me, ‘Oh, we only sold this many,’ then you tell the press, ‘Oh we sold this many!’ But then I’m saying, ‘Hey, you only told me we sold 800,000 buys but you told the press you sold a million buys.’ Then they say ‘Oh, we just say that for the press.’ No, pay me what you told the press because you lyin’ somewhere. You either lyin’ to me or you lyin’ to the press about the pay-per-view numbers. If they’re doing it to me, I’m sure they’re doing it to other fighters.

Well, this is an easy one: The UFC is lying to the press. If Dana White were to tell reporters that a big UFC fight did a million buys, and it was later proven somehow that the event did less than one million buys, it would be a minor embarrassment for the company that would be reported on MMA blogs for about two days. On the other hand, if the UFC mis-represented their pay-per-view numbers in order to short-change Anderson Silva on his PPV bonus and he found out about it, it would be grounds for an enormous lawsuit. Believe me, the UFC’s top brass aren’t stupid enough to ever try this.

What Jackson’s interview suggests is that the UFC occasionally exaggerates its PPV figures on the rare occasions when they actually do throw a number out to the press — something I already assumed they were doing. It also shows us that Jackson is willing to play out his public feud with the UFC to the bitter end, which might do him more harm than good in the long run. After all, how many fight promoters will want to work with a guy who has no qualms about putting their private business on the street if the relationship turns sour? Do you think Bjorn Rebney needs this kind of bullshit in his life?

[VIDEO] BJ Penn Discusses Retirement Without Ever Using the Word Itself

(Come on brah, would you give up this life to wrestle with a bunch of fence holders? | Photo via FIGHT!)

My good friend Karyn Bryant, host of MMA Heat, recently interviewed former welterweight and lightweight champion BJ Penn and asked him if he was still retired. Penn said he was grateful for the attention but that he doesn’t intend to fight right now.

“At the moment, I don’t have any plans to fight,” Penn said. “I have nothing scheduled, I’m just kind of taking it easy at this point in my life. As of right now, yeah, I’m not entering the Octagon anytime soon.”

Penn says that losing to Nick Diaz last fall was not the only reason he decided to stop competing. “The fight was a tough fight but I don’t think it was just that fight. I’ve been thinking about this for a while,” he said.

Bryant revealed to Penn that she had spoken to his boxing coach Jason Parillo, and that Parillo said he recently held pads for BJ. So why would Penn be hitting pads if he was retired?

“That’s a good question,” Penn said with a smile on his face. “That’s actually the first time I threw a punch since October, late October, since I fought. I don’t know. I was enjoying myself but I don’t know, it takes a lot. It takes a lot. These guys are the top athletes in the world, and it takes a lot of time and a lot of energy to compete with these people and you have to want to do it and you have to be there mentally.”

Penn’s words give insight to where he is in his life right now. After over a decade of fighting, perhaps he doesn’t see himself as having the commitment necessary to compete at the elite level he always has. Then again, watch the video below for yourself and notice that Penn doesn’t actually ever use the word “retire” himself.

Karyn Bryant, Her Husband and ‘Rampage’ Jackson’s Weird Sexual Relationship Continues

By Elias Cepeda

Ok, I can’t possibly be the only one who is reminded of this classic Chappelle’s Show  ‘Real World’ sketch whenever I watch Karyn Bryant get accosted by Quinton Jackson while her husband/cameraman/cuckold, Wade Eck silently and passively stands by and films the proceedings.

First there was Rampage’s attempt at motorboating Bryant to celebrate his win over Matt Hamill, and now this week he was back to his old tricks on Bryant’s MMA H.E.A.T. show. We’ve almost become numb to his antics and come to expect molestation from Rampage whenever a woman sticks a microphone in his face since it isn’t the first (or the second) female reporter Rampage “be humping” or otherwise sexually assaulting. Hell, we’ve lost count of the amount of videos out there of Rampage being his classy self.

Anyway, this time around Bryant had a full 45-minute sit down with Quinton, who we now know is all hopped up on testosterone injections, and besides his uncomfortable closeness to and constant leering and grabbing of Bryant, it was actually a pretty solid interview. He touched on a ton of topics including why he wants to leave the UFC, his rap career aspirations and how he helps his family and friends out financially.

But there was poor, pathetic Wade again, behind the camera, taking it all in, only this time he was forced to endure (or relished, who knows?) the grabbing and feigned foreplay much longer.

Not wanting to disappoint, Rampage, who said that Bryant is listed as “Karyn Motorboat” in his cell phone contact list, took things up another notch this time.

At one point, when the groping evidently got to be a little too distracting for Bryant, who asked if the T made him “more horny,” instead of telling him to stop, she reminded Jackson that her husband was standing right there. That’s when Jackson, without taking his legs or arms off of Karyn, began to dig in verbally at Eck, making fun of how Wade said he trains “full contact four days a week,” and telling him “while you were out training I was at your house.”

By the end of the interview Rampage basically had Bryant mocking her husband too. Sad and weird.

Though he’s off camera, one can just imagine the “Chad” character’s expression from Chappelle’s Real World sketch as he sobbed and masturbated while watching “Lysol,” and “Tyree” work his lady over in front of him on Wade’s face. Chad was of course being played by an actor in a fictional sketch. We’re not sure what Wade’s deal is.

Several items will be up for auction, including the Main Event Interim-Welterweight contender, Carlos Condit‘s very own fight shorts, which is a great gift for a woman or even a man, which is not a reflection of any possible homosexuality but is rather, simply an honor to own a badass fighter’s shorts.

Also up for sale are a roster of the MMA elite. What We Learned From Steven Seagal at UFC 135

Well, Steven Seagal made it out to the festivities Saturday night in Denver and it’s beginning to seem like either he’s some kind of mixed martial arts guru or he’s a senile old man who is way out of touch with reality. My bet’s on the latter.

Our friends Karyn Bryant from MMA H.E.A.T. and Ariel Helwani from MMAFighting caught up with Sensei Seagal before and after the event, respectively, and let’s just say old cockpuncher had a few yarns to spin.

Check out the videos and the bullet points of the world according to The Glimmer Man after the jump.

(Don’t look into his eyes. He’ll hypnotize you like he did the Black House guys.)

Seagal counts Jones as a friend and refers to him as “Mr. Jon”

• He claimed that he was going to have some words of advice for Jones in his dressing room prior to the bout, but according to Jones at the post-fight presser, he turned down the offer

• He refers to Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva as his “people” and his “sons” and “children”

• He said that Jones might use the front kick he taught Anderson and Lyoto, but later said he didn’t do it right because he hasn’t learned the deadly move yet

• He predicted that the fight would be decided on the ground by Jones by elbows

• He says Anderson wants to be a cop when he retires and that he may do so with him in Arizona

(Video courtesy of YouTube/ArielHelwani)

• According to a Tweet by Ariel Saturday night, Seagal told his cameraman what angle to shoot him at

• In spite of the fact that he said earlier that Jones’ elbo

In Spite of Our Pleas, Fox Execs Pushing for Gus Johnson Involvement in UFC Pre and Post-Fight Shows

(Video courtesy of YouTube/MMAHeat)

Somebody needs to send Eric Shanks a few links to some mixed martial arts website comment sections and message boards where the topic of Gus Johnson’s MMA commentary skills are being discussed. If they did, the FOX Sports Media Group President and Co-COO might think long and hard about having captain eyeshadow do the UFC’s pre and post-fight shows like he told MMA H.E.A.T’s Karyn Bryant he’s looking into doing.

This could call for a petition.

We’re not saying that Gus is a shitty commentator. He does a decent job excitedly screaming about how football players have “getting away from the cops speed” and how college basketball players are “rising and firing buckets.” It’s just that, in spite of his claims that he’s a BJJ blue belt under Renzo Gracie, he doesn’t seem to know much about MMA, which is a problem when your job is to talk about the intricacies of the sport. Am I right, Franklin McNeil?

Hopefully Dana puts his foot down on the matter so we can sleep easy knowing that our MMA coverage won’t be sponsored by Cover Girl.

Do yourself a favor and watch the whole interview with Lorenzo Fertitta. He gives a level-headed and articulate breakdown of the deal.
