Kelvin Gastelum gave fans a bit of a worry earlier today (Fri. November 1, 2019) when he was the last fighter to weigh-in for UFC 244 tomorrow night. However, there was some controversy regarding Gastelum’s weigh-in.

Gastelum needed the towel to step onto the scale, where he weighed in at 184 pounds, needing only 186 to make weight. During his weigh-in, many believe Gastelum was leaning on his coach, Rafael Cordeiro. You be the judge.

Speaking to MMA Fighting, Cordeiro gave his thoughts on the accusations of Gastelum leaning on him.

“People are tripping,” Cordeiro said. “I went there to check his weight. How am I going to lift him two pounds with my chest? They are crazy. They are tripping. It’s drama to sell the fight. There’s no way. There’s no way.

“There were two athletic commission officials there, I was in front of the whole world… That’s impossible. It doesn’t even cross my mind to try to break the law. The kid made weight, two pounds under. He did his job. He was the last one, he was sweating, running like a maniac, working hard, and got the job done. Everyone has a mouth and can say whatever they want.”

The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) has reviewed the incident, and determined that there was no wrongdoing, and declared Gastelum will not be disqualified, and he is good to go for his middleweight bout with Darren Till.

“The Commission has reviewed the footage available to it at this time of Mr. Gastelum’s weigh-in. The official weight determination will not be disturbed, and Mr. Gastelum will not be disqualified from competing in UFC 244, as the possible contact indicated in the video cannot be said to have materially impacted Mr. Gastelum’s weight to the extent that he would have exceeded the applicable weight limit allowable for competition in the match.

“The commission will continue to review the matter and disciplinary action will be pursued if clear evidence of contact with another person during the weigh-in process becomes evident, as any such contact is a violation of commission policy.”

What do you think about Gastelum’s weigh-in? Do you think he leaned on his coach?

While the mixed martial arts (MMA) community was consumed with the possibility that this weekend’s UFC 244 main event was in jeopardy, it was overlooked that the co-main event has been having issues as well.

Darren Till and Kelvin Gastelum are slated to meet at middleweight in the Madison Square Garden co-headliner Saturday night. However, according to MMA insider @TalkMMA on Twitter, Till has been dealing with some visa issues ahead of the event.

In a follow-up report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Till’s visa issues have been squared away, and he’s expected to arrive in New York City on Thursday.

Till’s issues with his visa were reportedly linked to his recent arrest in the Canary Islands. While things seem to be all clear for Till vs. Gastelum this weekend, the UFC has a backup plan just in case. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reports that top-ranked middleweight Jared Cannonier is in training, and is currently in New York, in case something goes wrong.

The Till vs. Gastelum matchup is one of the most anticipated on the card. It will be the Englishman’s debut at middleweight, and a huge accomplishment for Gastelum if he’s able to hand the talented striker his third-ever loss.

What do you make of the UFC having Cannonier on standby in case Till is unable to make the trip?

Kelvin Gastelum plans on reminding the world just how good he is when he takes on Darren Till.

Gastelum welcomes Till to the middleweight division when they meet in the co-main event of UFC 244 this weekend at Madison Square Garden, New York. It promises to be an explosive matchup between two of the best strikers in the sport today.

And Gastelum, in particular, is hungry to make a statement especially coming off his unanimous decision loss to current champion Israel Adesanya earlier this year:

“I got to go out here and make a statement,” he said in a recent interview. “Put a stamp on Darren Till. Unfortunately, he’s the one that’s in my way and I got to put him out in devastating fashion so I can make the world remember who I am.”

Considering the back-and-forth nature of his fight with Adesanya at UFC 236, it is entirely possible that a win against Till gives the Mexican-American another shot at the title in the future.

It will be even more so the case if he does it with a finish and that’s what Gastelum is predicting as he believes he’ll get things done as early as the first round:

“I’m predicting a first-round knockout,” he added. “I feel very confident in my skills and preparation. After having gone through a war, you only level up and I feel like I have leveled up and man, it’s going to be very hard to beat me.”

Who do you have winning the UFC 244 co-main event?
