Kelvin Gastelum has his next fight booked as he is set to take on Darren Till at UFC 244 in Madison Square Garden. It will be the Englishman’s middleweight debut inside the Octagon and comes against the guy who just fought for the interim middleweight title. And, who was scheduled to fight for the middleweight title earlier this year.

When Kelvin Gastelum got the call to fight Darren Till at UFC 244 he was surprised by it.

“At first thought, I was like, ‘I don’t know if it’s worth it for me to accept this kind of fight because he is coming off a two-fight losing streak,’” Gastelum told MMA Junkie. “I feel like I’m still in title contention, and I feel like I should get one of those top guys. But I want to fight in Madison Square Garden.”

Why he ended up accepting the fight is simple he wanted to fight at MSG. Yet, he was unsure of the fight as he says a win over Till doesn’t put him into the title shot talks which fighting a top-middleweight would do.

However, Kelvin Gastelum says this a chance for him to prove to everyone he is a top middleweight.

“I put a lot of thought on who my opponent is and why I’m fighting him, and will it get me to the title shot. Will it get me closer to where I want to go,” Gastelum said. “I definitely asked those questions. And, none of them applied to Darren Till. I don’t think if I win – it’s not going to get me a title shot. It’s not getting me closer. But I just think I need to go out there and make a statement against a guy like Darren Till because of my last performance. I want to go out there, I want to show that I’m still hungry, I’m still in contention, and I’m still one of the best guys around at this weight class.”

Darren Till has been thinking about a move to middleweight for quite some time. He was a massive welterweight who had trouble making weight as he missed for his scrap against Stephen Thompson.

Now, after two straight losses where he lost to Tyron Woodley for the belt by submission, then was knocked out by Jorge Masvidal, Till decided to move up. At UFC 244, the Englishman will make his middleweight debut when he takes on Kelvin Gastelum, in a fight that promised to bring fireworks.

The two are both former welterweights so the size difference may not be that different. Yet, Darren Till released several photos on Instagram where he is looking massive ahead of his 185-pound debut.

Darren Till no doubt has added weight and muscle to make the jump up 15 pounds to middleweight. As you can see in the pictures, he looks shredded and more muscular than he was at welterweight.

When he steps into the Octagon at UFC 244 he is looking to snap his two-fight losing streak. He is 17-2-1 as a pro and before the two losses had notable wins over Stephen Thompson and Donald Cerrone in the UFC.

His opponent in Kelvin Gastelum, meanwhile, is coming off of a decision loss at UFC 236 to Israel Adesanya. There, he was fighting for the interim middleweight title. Before that, at UFC 234, he was scheduled to face Robert Whittaker for the middleweight title but the Aussie champion had to pull out on the day of the fight.

Gastelum is looking to get back to the winning ways at UFC 244 just like Darren Till. As, before the loss to Adesanya, he had beaten Michael Bisping and Jacare Souza.

Darren Till has his UFC middleweight debut booked as he will take on Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 244. Yet, many fans took to social media saying it was a bad matchup for the Englishman.

What many fans were confused was why the UFC would give Till a top-five middleweight after UFC president, Dana White admitted he rushed the Englishman too soon. According to the boss, there is a simple reason why.

“It’s the fight he wants,” White said to reporters after the Contender Series (h/t MMA Junkie).

Although it is a fight Darren Till wanted, it is not something the Las Vegas-based promotion had to give him. Yet, White admits they did try to talk him about it, but he was stubborn on the idea of fighting Kelvin Gastelum.

“We did,” White said. “Yes, we did. ‘That’s the fight I want.’ We went to him and said, ‘You sure this is the fight you want?’ He’s moving up. ‘You sure the Gastelum fight?’ That’s the fight I want.’ So, love it.”

Till, of course, is on a two-fight losing streak where he was submitted by Tyron Woodley at UFC 228 when he fought for the title. Then, at UFC London in March, he was knocked out cold by Jorge Masvidal in the second round to set up the move to middleweight.

Gastelum, meanwhile, is coming off of a decision loss to Israel Adesanya at UFC 236 when he fought for the interim middleweight title. Before that, he was set to fight Robert Whittaker for the title at UFC 234 before the champ had to pull out on the day of the fight. To earn the title shot he beat Jacare Souza by decision and knocked out Michael Bisping.

Darren Till vs. Kelvin Gastelum goes down on Nov. 2 at UFC 244.
